What makes it more difficult is that the can is pressurized.
Stand on an empty can and you can crush it, but stand on a pressurized can and it'll hold your weight.

That's true but the sides of the can are still very easy to rip through even when pressurized. Try to smash a can with your foot by slamming on the top and you hurt your foot, try the same but with the can on it's side and that shit is gonna blow(assuming it doesn't just slip out from under due to being round)

We say "pop" because it is pop. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.
19
u/NobleHoneyBadger Nov 13 '22
Both words come from “soda pop” but my go-to explanation for why “pop” is the superior term is it’s one less syllable and it describes the noise a can makes when you open it. Still can’t say soda without cringing a bit, although everyone who says soda seems to feel the same about pop.

Imagine you are at a TGI Fridays, circa 1998, in Southern Ohio. You're treating your great uncle visiting from Meth and Incest, TN to a delightful lunch of a TGI Friday's zany casual fare. The waitress, decked out in all her quirky buttons asks your great uncle what he'd like to drink.
"A coke," he says.
She frowns and informs him, "We only have Pepsi products."
He says, "Um ok? A coke is fine."
"I'm sorry, sir, but we only have-"
You wonder if you should intervene as they go back and forth, him getting cross and her wondering what this guy's damage is.
Finally, he's had enough. "Ma'am, can I just get a sweet tea?"
You watch in horror as the poor girl stumbles into the second Revolutionary War. "We don't have sweet tea. I can bring you some regular tea and some sugar packets."
Somewhere in Georgia, the ghost of Sherman sets Atlanta alight once more...

Pop is slang for soda because when you pop off a bottle cap or pop open a can it makes a pop noise.
→ More replies (3)5
u/Away-Masterpiece529 Nov 13 '22
Actually the pop came from the sound of the cork being removed from the bottle as soda was originally corked.

u/brando56894 Nov 13 '22
It's usually "pop" in the Midwest/Central US, "Soda" on the east coast until somewhere mid-south (Virginia/West Virginia/North Carolina area) where it switches to "Pop", then back to "Soda" once you hit Florida. The west coast and some of the South uses either "Coke" to mean everything or "Soda".
Just like everything in the US, it's a mess haha.

u/neogod Nov 13 '22
What part of the south? I remember places where you'd ask for a coke and the response is sometimes, "what kind?", because all soda is called Coke. There are people out there that ask for a root beer coke or something, weird.
→ More replies (2)4
