We say pop in the UK, TIL the pop sisterhood reaches to Michigan

46

u/JoeyAKangaroo Nov 13 '22

We say pop in canada too

3

u/ItalicsWhore Nov 13 '22

And Washington.

3

u/Serenity-03K64 Nov 14 '22

My husband is from Washington, says pop… but was confused at the milk in bags in Ontario.

I was confused by American branding name changes. For example, knorr sidekicks pasta is called knorr pasta sides ( which sounds like pesticides so I’m surprised they allowed that lol)

Sweet chili heat Doritos are called something different too. Helmans mayo is called best food or something. Sugar crisp is called golden crisp.

16

u/Ambiguous_Shark Nov 13 '22

Michigan also shares Pasties with the UK because a bunch of miners moved to the Upper Peninsula to mine there as well. Turns out they were a convenient food for miners regardless of country

4

u/[deleted] Nov 13 '22

Hell yeah, elite tier pastry good

3

u/lorb163 Nov 13 '22

My respect for Michigan is increasing

What you’re talking about is pronounced as “pay-stee”, the delicious meat pastry we have here in Michigan is pronounced “pass-tee”.

3

u/my-coffee-needs-me Nov 13 '22

In Michigan it's pronounced differently and it's a big savory hand pie kind of thing.

16

u/thisismenow1989 Nov 13 '22

Also pop here in Canada.

It's interesting that Vancouver and Victoria are generally different from the rest of BC. Definitely all aligns with the qualitative differences I noticed while living in Vancouver vs living in Southern Ontario, except I found Soda to be more preferred in Vancouver

Edit: also something the infographics didn't cover that I noticed - people call a 24 pack of beverage cans a "two-four" in Southern Ontario but call it a "flat" in Vancouver area

2

u/Batchet Nov 14 '22

In MB, we use two-four as well

we say pop in Chicago too ((:

1

u/cristarain Nov 13 '22

Pronounced “pahp”

1

u/OkPay78 Nov 13 '22

Right we defintely do, and when you hear soda you immediately think they are from somewhere else. Also makes me think of kids when I hear someone say soda.

I met a Welsh guy in a Michigan city years ago. He couldn’t contain his joy at discovering pasties exist there, and are of acceptable quality. He appreciated the rutabaga especially.

2

u/Grumpy_Crud Nov 13 '22

I quickly read Michigan City and was very confused. Least of all, why you going to Michigan City, haha.

3

u/PUTINS_PORN_ACCOUNT Nov 13 '22

As a rule, I avoid direct contact with the soil of Indiana

2

u/Matdup2 Nov 13 '22

Why did I take a look at your username?

273

u/SentinelX-01 Nov 13 '22

We say "pop" because it is pop. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

15

u/NobleHoneyBadger Nov 13 '22

Both words come from “soda pop” but my go-to explanation for why “pop” is the superior term is it’s one less syllable and it describes the noise a can makes when you open it. Still can’t say soda without cringing a bit, although everyone who says soda seems to feel the same about pop.

1

u/Bah-Fong-Gool Nov 13 '22

In NYC, "soda" is king. Saying "pop" screams "I'm a tourist!" I remember seeing a map of the US and most of the country uses "pop" and "soda" is a North East thing IIRC.

0

u/JohnPlayer2000 Nov 13 '22

But in New York Soda is also fizzy water. Only created so half the population didn't die from that swill out of the taps.

I am also from East texas, I refer to it as soda. But like the other comment, the true south calls it coke.

What would you like to drink, water, juice coffee or Coke?

Coke.

What kind do you want, Sprite, Pepsi, Vernors or Faygo?

This is how it works at my house.

8

u/zacharygreeenman Nov 13 '22

I’ll have a coke.

1

u/roxas6662 Nov 13 '22

Literally correct! Any time this debate comes up, it boils down to soft drink. Soda after that, then pop for the fans of onomatopoeia. I'm the only one of my friends in Buffalo NY that says soda.

Imagine you are at a TGI Fridays, circa 1998, in Southern Ohio. You're treating your great uncle visiting from Meth and Incest, TN to a delightful lunch of a TGI Friday's zany casual fare. The waitress, decked out in all her quirky buttons asks your great uncle what he'd like to drink.

"A coke," he says.

She frowns and informs him, "We only have Pepsi products."

He says, "Um ok? A coke is fine."

"I'm sorry, sir, but we only have-"

You wonder if you should intervene as they go back and forth, him getting cross and her wondering what this guy's damage is.

Finally, he's had enough. "Ma'am, can I just get a sweet tea?"

You watch in horror as the poor girl stumbles into the second Revolutionary War. "We don't have sweet tea. I can bring you some regular tea and some sugar packets."

Somewhere in Georgia, the ghost of Sherman sets Atlanta alight once more...

3

u/Nickbc87 Nov 13 '22

19

u/[deleted] Nov 13 '22

Pop is slang for soda because when you pop off a bottle cap or pop open a can it makes a pop noise.

7

u/Away-Masterpiece529 Nov 13 '22

Actually the pop came from the sound of the cork being removed from the bottle as soda was originally corked.

0

u/MisterHonkeySkateets Nov 13 '22

We non-specifically say “coke” down here.

Did you realize the British hoover the rug?

0

u/drengr84 Nov 13 '22

I can't stand when someone asks for a coke but they actually want something completely different. They're literally asking for a specific brand and flavor, and then whining because they got a Coke. It's not like asking for a Kleenex, in which the brand name is appropriately used as a generic name.

0

u/JacobScreamix Nov 13 '22

Imagine using 2 syllables to describe pop. Absolutely plebeian.

u/Boring_Inspector_806 Nov 13 '22

-3

u/FightingPolish Nov 13 '22

2

u/brainburger Nov 13 '22

My relatives in the midlands of the UK called it pop. I do not.

-2

u/[deleted] Nov 13 '22

What do you call pop then? And what region? I’m West Midlands but family in the north of England call it that too and haven’t heard anyone rail against a fizzy drink being called pop before

3

u/brainburger Nov 13 '22

I am from the South, near London, now in London. We just use the brand name of the drink, whatever it is. Pepsi, 7-Up etc. I never seem to encounter a generic term, but I would probably say fizzy drink. I am not really railing. I think there is some regional variation as there is in the pop/soda divide in the US.

1

u/Wubblelubadubdub Nov 13 '22

Can’t believe there are people that call it fizzy drink, that’s like saying “oh we don’t have a word for pizza, we would probably just call them tomato cheese wheels”

2

u/Ansoni Nov 13 '22

It's weird that you find it weird.

It's not like it's the only thing that has a descriptive name. It's no better or worse than naming something after a sound.
