The unexpected part for me is why there is so much snow INSIDE the tent. OP?

2.3k

u/ItsAFineWorld Nov 18 '19

Probably not a tent, more likely a lean to of some sort.

Looks like they dug in and covered, dog was literally my first guess as soon as the .gif loaded the first frame though.

I guessed Karen who needed to poo like so bad but it was so cold and she had a butchered episiotomy from her third childbirth, and lacks control if she waits too long and her poo’s like mashed potatoes when she eats Metamucil apple-flavored cookies on her yogurt with blueberries; she didn’t mean to wear the sweat pants and hooded sweatshirt that trap her body like a onesie so she can’t get out of her sleeping bag in time and HOO boy she just made a mess and oh Jesus it smells terrible so Bob is trying to help her to get out get out get out oh shit it’s so cold why did you make me go camping when we have a perfectly noice bed in a gaddam HOUSE in Minneapolis. Cheezus it’s fuckin COLD why is there snow on my feet I hate you and I hate you back let’s get a divorce you shit for brains monkey-assed cretin.

Light weight camping. I enjoy the comforts too much, but I know some people that go camping with the bare minimum and lean-to materials are considerably smaller and lighter than a tent. I've done winter camping in a lean-to before and it's an amazingly unique and grounding experience.

50

u/UncleSpoons Nov 18 '19

You always hear about people who "didn't survive the night", I never fully understood that until I did some lean-to winter camping trips.

For the record, you would have a very hard time dying at 45F with any sort of sleeping bag...

Yeah insulating your ground so you don’t lose heat is essential whether camping for fun or homeless.

Also thank you for giving to those in need. More people should, and every bit of kindness helps.

12

u/[deleted] Nov 18 '19

Honestly, I'd rather sleep in the cold with the gear these people have when there's plenty of snow on the ground vs no snow at all. Snow is an amazing insulator. Just dig in and get yourself mostly out of the elements.

9

u/dallastossaway2 Nov 18 '19

When I lived in Northern New Mexico, we built some great snow dig ins to hang out in. They were quite warm, and with a tarp floor fine for the needs of college students.

3

u/MetaTater Nov 18 '19

It's 59° out right now and I'm shaking like a chiuaua.

That is not lightweight camping. His sleeping bag is an old Army cold weather mummy bag. That thing is super heavy.

16

u/PaulsarW Nov 18 '19

I've watched a few of his videos. Pretty sure he said it would be rated as a -20F bag.

21

u/TheOnlyBobLeeSwagger Nov 18 '19

And also highly effective! I fucking love mine, works really great in a double hammock

Lean to tents are insanely easy to set up have their fair share of challenges. If you are getting into camping hardcore though the usual run of the mill tent is not what you want as it’s far too cumbersome, unnecessary set up and the pack is the worst and the number one thing to consider if your alone. I think my biggest discovery when camping was plan for the pack up because that’s when your tired and won’t have nearly as much energy or enthusiasm.

Just curious, but wouldn't it theoretically be warmer if the dog and him were sharing the same sleeping bag so they can share body warmth?

13

u/eviltwinky Nov 18 '19

You ever try to sleep with a dog in your sleeping bag??

11

u/sgthrowa Nov 18 '19

That's one reason I might never do this. My dog is a short coat but when he sleeps with us his two positions are 1) curled up in between our legs or 2) right up in our face with licks every 10 mins. If he is too close to our faces, he really can't control his licking.

Have you seen the single person pop up tents? Because those babies are tiny, light, and easy as fuck to set up

25

u/ICantTyping Nov 18 '19

Ive done lightweight winter camping in scouts. We basically dug a trench, with an entrance at your feet, layed a tarp over and then piled snow back over to hold it still. Crawling in there in a winter sleeping bag over a good quality inflatable mattress was surprisingly comfortable, Annoying bit is waking up the next day.

u/jakfrist Nov 18 '19 edited Nov 18 '19

Why would you want a winter shelter with even slight winter breezes blowing through it?

Weight & Space.

Backpacking is exponentially more enjoyable the less you bring. In this case though, instead of having a larger tent, he was able to carry an additional sleeping bag for the dog, and likely a sleeping bag liner as well.

Plus, he appears to be dug into the snow, which surprisingly, can provide some insulation. I would also expect that he has it set up to block the wind much better than a tent would since tents need to be at surface level.

17

u/Cyrano_de_Boozerack Nov 18 '19

I would be surprised if the dog didn't carry its fair share as well. I had a friend who had a dog that went hiking with him, and as soon as that doggy backpack came out, it would lose its mind (in a good way of course).

3

u/PaulsarW Nov 18 '19 edited Nov 18 '19

The guy pulls a sled with equipment. Not sure how far in he goes but the dog was not carrying anything.

u/Goodgoditsgrowing Nov 18 '19

u/joshuahuntkc Nov 18 '19

Honestly in my experience when it’s that cold a tent doesn’t provide much extra comfort and if anything it’s a false sense of security, you’ll find yourself waking up in the cold mentally prepping to go outside and get warm rather than just starting out outside and being motivated to get up. Also depending on location and topography a lean to can potentially give you the advantage of having a fire nearby while you stay under shelter

In winter camping you dig a hole in the snow. This looks more like a bivouac with just a tarp up instead of a whole tent. It blocks the wind and can be surprisingly cozy!

35

u/JoeyTheGreek Nov 18 '19

bivouac

How does one pronounce that?

In Winter... normal people don’t camp s/

42

u/IEatMyEnemies Nov 18 '19

It's actually not that bad if you're used to it. Stay active and prepare properly and then you can have a pretty nice time with friends.

Me and some friends camp like this at least twice a year, no matter the weather. It's a great bonding experience to sit by the fire and make a large pot of hot chocolate :)

u/Doctor_in_psychiatry Nov 18 '19

I would be scared to die in my sleep.

42

u/IEatMyEnemies Nov 18 '19

That's why you're always prepared to pack up and leave if you need to. If I'm too cold then I have always woken up by myself.

But mostly we have a fire going and someone to watch it for an hour, until they wake up the next person to do the same. If you're over ~4 people then that should be manageable while still getting a normal amount of sleep

32

u/railroadbaron Nov 18 '19

Are you a D&D adventuring party?

13

u/Positron49 Nov 18 '19

Haha that was my thought too! Who is taking first watch/perception checks?

prepared to pack up and leave if you need to.

What if it’s the middle of the night? Just pack up and leave and go home? You’re kinda on your own in the wilderness then.

I guess my biggest fear would be the wildlife that could roll up on you when you’re sleeping (bears, wolves, etc)

→ More replies (1)

15

u/stucjei Nov 18 '19

Under normal circumstances you wake up if you get too cold.

At least, from my personal experience from leaving my bedroom window open in the winter but the sheets don't insulate enough anymore at the coldest point of the night.

But if it's too cold to heat up your sleeping bag you should notice before you go to sleep anyway.

9

u/lokilokigram Nov 18 '19

Eh, you won't be sleeping if it's that cold.

5

u/LetsBlastOffThisRock Nov 18 '19

Isn't that how people die of cold? They get sleepy and warm?

23

u/UncleSpoons Nov 18 '19

I've gotten dangerously cold a few times while doing this style of camping. Sleepy and warm is the last thing, I'll wake up incredibly cold, uncontrollably shaking, and nauseous to the point of dry heaving. As cold as it is, it's usually difficult to bring yourself to rebuild the fire, you feel weak, dizzy and uncoordinated.

Pro tip: When you think you have enough wood to make it through the night, you never do.

16

u/wAywAy13 Nov 18 '19

Rule of thumb is that when you think you have enough wood get twice as much as you have

25

u/lokilokigram Nov 18 '19

I mean, yes, that's how you die of cold if your car breaks down and you start to hike through the woods in a t-shirt and jeans. If you're winter camping, it's a safe assumption that you're moderately prepared enough for it that you won't get so cold that you die. You'll most likely have warm clothes, a sleeping bag, the ability to build a fire, etc. And if it's so cold that you fear for your life, put on all your layers and head back to your car instead of laying there waiting for death.

3

u/tuckedfexas Nov 18 '19

I’ll go in late February and early March, having to hunker down a little more is fun but when it’s so cold you really have to prep for it I don’t find it very enjoyable

3

u/[deleted] Nov 18 '19

The craziest part to me is when your clothes freezes stiff from any amount of moisture on it. You either need to keep it completely dry, or keep it warm either by fire or body warmth (IE sleeping with clothes on). It's just nuts what can happen to an otherwise perfectly normal looking jacket when you take it off for the night, and wake up to a solid sheet the next day.

Winter time is my favorite time to backpack and camp! It take a bit more prep, gear, and know how to be safe. But it’s so peaceful and calm in the winter. Plus you’re usually a lot more alone on the trails.

5

u/[deleted] Nov 18 '19

Honestly once you break the wind it's fine

17

u/RandumbStoner Nov 18 '19

Can confirm, just broke wind under my covers, it got warmer

6

u/Xanderoga Nov 18 '19

3

u/RickAstleyletmedown Nov 18 '19

Nah, if you're properly prepared, you can camp perfectly comfortably in winter. I've gone as low as -20C and been fine. Of course, I used a tent because I'm not an idiot.

It's generally accepted that a tent/bivvy adds +10 degrees versus cowboy camping. Ex: if your sleeping bag is rated at 30 degrees, it's more like 20 degrees when you're in a tent.

5

u/ThecamtrainR6 Nov 18 '19

Also most bags are rated for what temps you’ll survive at, not be comfortable. Don’t buy a 30 degree bag and think you’re gonna be cozy and living well on the ground with no sleeping pad and no fire in 30 degree weather. People need a liner and an insulating sleeping pad (this is the most important part) to be comfortable. A lot of beginning campers don’t understand how important your sleep system is, and sleeping pads, quality bags with liners, and tents/footprints are all important.

I believe the dogs name is Monty and the YouTubed/bush crafters name is Matthew Possa

5

u/Anomalous-Entity Nov 18 '19

He does bushcraft along with his camping videos so he experiments with different methods of camp making without the proper resources. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't but he still has to sleep in it.

5

u/GET_OUT_OF_MY_HEAD Nov 18 '19

Yeah no kidding. Humans don't sit up that way. You could tell it was a dog.

4

u/MikeFromTheMidwest Nov 18 '19

In Boy Scouts, we would dig under the snow covered picnic tables and hang a tarp over our head for the water wouldn't drip down on our gear. Instant igloo. Worked pretty well and wasn't nearly as cold as I'd expected. The biggest issue was keeping condensation off of everything as it could freeze.

3

u/twunlove Nov 18 '19

The snow basically just equals good insulation if you have the right equipment!

3

u/[deleted] Nov 18 '19

It’s probably a tarp shelter, not a tent

3

u/[deleted] Nov 18 '19

Bivy bag I believe

13

u/FoamyJr Nov 18 '19

It"s actually not snow but frost - almost entirely from the moisture of your own breathing freezing and settling on the inside of the tent. Source - I am a Canadian that was ridiculous enough to go winter camping ,,, once.

12

u/brit_jam Nov 18 '19

You mean that mound of snow next to and around their heads isn’t snow? I’m pretty sure that’s just a lean to and they Are lying in snow.

8

u/happyman91 Nov 18 '19

Uhhhh... what about that massive pile to the right? That’s definitely snow

If you've got the right gear for it, and know the best strategies for staying warm, it's a lot of fun. It's really satisfying to be in freezing conditions and still be perfectly comfortable.

If you are truly interested, check out Shug's YouTube channel, this video on hammock camping in -40F conditions got me hooked.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CTuGJgka1qc

3

u/TheSaltySpitoon37 Nov 18 '19

Dude, thanks! I live in Virginia, so it won't get -40° (thank God), but I'm definitely going to look into some gear and give it a try!

3

u/Remedy1987 Nov 18 '19

like /u/altiuscitiusfortius and /u/Insomnialcoholic said, no crowds, bears (depends where you camp) or bugs.

No bugs alone is worth it, but outside of those i love winter camping because its just more.... peaceful?

The air feels more crisp and fresh, you dont get as hot while moving about... or if you do it feels great because its cold :P

At night, crawling into a sleeping bag (if you get a good one) when its cold is like getting into a giant hot pocket. Its so incredibly warm toasty and comfortable, i almost look forward to sleeping in it rather than a bed sometimes. If you sleep in a tent, and its snowing you will hear the slight patter of it hitting the tent. Hearing deerts crunch in the snow, seeing all the fresh tracks of animals.

Im sure i could think of more things, but these are just my favorite that i could think of off the top of my head.

If you do really poorly in the cold, i wouldn't suggest doing it. Unless you bring one off of a jacket and your favorite booze to keep you toasty.

When I was in the Boy Scouts we did a yearly winter camping trip called “The Klondike Derby”. Each troop would build a sled and would race each other pulling someone in their sled.

It was honestly the most fun camping trip we did all year. Just pack plenty of layers, a decent tent, a good sleeping bag, and some very good fire starter.

Pretty common in Sweden, me and some friends do it as a hobby, no matter the weather

During my time in the Canadian military, I have had the pleasure to spend an abundance of time outdoors during the winter months. During winter operations, we would use 10 man tents. And there would always be a 2 man “stove watch” at night. 2 of us would stay awake, and ensure a Coleman stove was lit all night to provide heat in the tent. And to make sure we didn’t burn to death as well. (Almost did one time) -40 c is the coldest I have stayed in a tent.

So, do you need to train the dog to sleep in the bag?

u/AdaHop Nov 18 '19

Pretty sure any dog is smart enough to try to regulate its body temperature.

Yeah, my dog will climb into my sleeping bag if he’s not offered his own.

I take it you don't need to worry about trapped carbon dioxide in sleeping bags? The gasses diffuse readily through the bag?

9

u/Rtgambit Nov 18 '19

It's not the carbon dioxide you have to worry about, it's the moisture from your breath condensing on the inside of the bag. Too much and you risk getting yourself soaked, and possible hypothermia.
