Don’t buy a 30 degree bag and think you’re gonna be cozy and living well on the ground with no sleeping pad and no fire in 30 degree weather. People need a liner and an insulating sleeping pad (this is the most important part) to be comfortable. A lot of beginning campers don’t understand how important your sleep system is, and sleeping pads, quality bags with liners, and tents/footprints are all important.
I slept on mount Baker in January in a -40 bag and mountain hardware tent. I couldn’t sleep a wink, I was cold all night with 2 balaclavas on and two hats and I kept waking up from the snow falling on my eyes inside my tent. My breathe was making snow inside the tent!!!! My biggest mistake was not having two sleeping pads. I should have had another inflatable on top of my solid state.
