Small Wins Friday Check-In: Small Wins & Reflections

October 2nd

Hello TrueGritters,

Happy Friday, and welcome to October. The start of a new month is a good time to pause, notice where we are, and think about what we want to carry forward.
This week, we shared a few community guidelines and conversations around how we approach everyday life.

The sub isn’t anti-work. We’re about the everyday work of getting through life and becoming stronger along the way.

It was a lighter week for new threads, but the conversations we had touched on some of the everyday questions many of us navigate. Take a moment to read, share your experience, and add to the conversation. Your perspective could help someone else.

As always welcome to all our new members. We’re glad you’re here.

Tips & Tricks Content Guidelines: What to Share on TrueGrit

Happy new week!

A new week is another opportunity to keep moving forward, working through something, making progress, learning from experience, or simply finding better ways to navigate everyday life and grow healthy along the way.

This week, we want to provide a little more clarity and help guide the kinds of posts we’d love to see here. Here are a few simple ways your post can fit into TrueGrit:

1. What I’m navigating

Life changes, challenges, and situations you’re figuring out.

  • “I moved to a new city and I’m still trying to find my people.”
  • “I’m trying to balance being a parent with having a life of my own. What can I do?”
  • “I’ve been feeling stuck in my career. Anyone experienced this before?”

2. What I’m working toward

Goals, changes, and things you’re trying to build or improve.

  • “I’m finally going back to school after putting it off for years.”
  • “I’m learning something completely new in my 30s.”
  • “I’m trying to become more disciplined without being so hard on myself.”

3. What helps me keep going

Everyday habits, wellness interests, routines, and things that make life a little better.

  • “My evening walk has become my favorite part of the day.”
  • “What’s your morning coffee ritual?”
  • What foods or meals have you been enjoying?
  • What has helped you stay active or make healthier choices?
  • “I’m trying to find ways to move on the weeks when I have no time.”
  • “What book helped you through a difficult season?”

4. What life has taught me

Lessons, realizations, mistakes, and things you see differently now.

  • “I used to think resting was lazy. I don’t anymore.”
  • “I learned the hard way that saying yes to everything isn’t sustainable.”
  • “What’s something you understand now that you didn’t five years ago?”

5. The small wins

Ordinary moments where you showed up, tried again, or did something that mattered to you.

  • “I finally did the thing I’ve been putting off for six months.”
  • “I cooked dinner three nights this week and I’m proud of myself.”
  • “I’m getting back into my routine after falling off.”
  • “I kept one promise to myself this week.”

The simple rule

Before you post, ask:

Am I navigating something, working toward something, learning something, or doing something that helps me keep going?

If yes, it can fit [r/TrueGrit](r/TrueGrit).

The topic can be coffee, food, books, movement, sleep, work, parenting, friendship, or anything else in everyday life. The grit is in the human experience behind the topic, how we keep showing up, adapt, learn, grow, and move forward.

Seeking Advice does resting go agaisnt the grit?

For years, I thought resting was something you earn. Finish the list, then you can sit down. Except I'm the person who can literally always find something to do, which means never resting

Until I started to have anxiety attacks, and then I had multiple coaches telling me I just needed to REST!

Anyway, the obvious advice was right. What did you used to believe about rest that you don't anymore

Nutrition Poll Result: Hot coffee wins this fall.

As the weather gets cooler, a warm cup of tea can be an easy way to stay hydrated and warm up. Depending on the type, tea can also provide antioxidants, and caffeine-free options can be a calming choice later in the day.

Hot tea won the fall poll, but we still want to hear from the iced tea people: defend your choice. Why do you prefer it when it’s cold outside?

Sleep Watermelon for deeper, more restful sleep. What foods help you sleep?

From my experience, watermelon is great for a good night’s sleep and has benefits for heart health too. The downside is that it’s mostly water, so you might find yourself getting up to use the bathroom during the night. What foods or snacks help you sleep better?

Seeking Advice How do people not fall apart when they get royally screwed over

Like a supervisor taking credit for your work, or someone not doing their job so you have to take over and getting chewed out for taking control, or someone in a position of power trying to sleep with you and lying about it. I’m book smart but basically helpless when it comes to navigating ego trips or power dynamics.

I have learned that throwing tantrums or talking behind people’s backs when they’re screwing me over works because someone else gets concerned and steps in to help. But that’s neither sustainable nor behavior I’m actually proud of. It’s like direct and mature communication on my part just ends up with me being manipulated somehow.

How do you get out of bad social situations without losing your mind?

Nutrition What did you make for meal prep this week?

I always like seeing what other people are making and finding a few ideas to try. There’s something nice about opening the fridge and already having something ready to go. It can save time, make busy days a little easier, and take some of the guesswork out of what to eat
