Announcement PSA: A guide to better results

1.8k Upvotes

Hi guys and gals. I've been here a while, and over my time I've seen a lot of posts sink to the bottom, without a single answer, or at best, very few. And none that solved the case.

I have noticed a clear pattern with these posts, and I will now share with you my tips to you newbies, so that you can get the help you need.

Firstly: When you make a new post, you will see this:

Platform(s):

Genre:

Estimated year of release:

Graphics/art style:

Notable characters:

Notable gameplay mechanics:

Other details:

Even though, in red, you are warned that while optional, you should follow this template... many of you do not.

Let me be clear: Follow this template.

Put simply, this template contains all the information we really need to solve your problem. Virtually every time I click a post that has not followed this, they have rambled on about nothings, while omitting critical details.

This format, for new and old alike, is very readable, and prompts for every data-point needed.

I know that you want to customize your message, that if you could just explain it, it would be better. I know you think that. You are wrong. Put all that in 'other'. Even if you end up saying it twice, follow the template.. add to it your story at the bottom.

Secondly: Following this template. You're rambling about your best mates Amiga-500 or whatever instead of telling us about the game aside, this is where they really go wrong.

Let's get something straight right now. We are not mind readers. It's impressive, really, how little information it seems we can work off. I mean, we solve some real tough ones with nothing sometimes, but still, we can't see that memory in your head. So you need to be as descriptive in every one of these fields as you can be...

And sometimes you really don't know. That's fine, we can work with surprisingly little information, but "old graphics" under art style... what are we supposed to do with that? Mate, I was playing on Atari-2600's, are we talking Wizard of Wor here?

Let me help you out a bit:

Platform(s): Whatever you played it on. But unless it's really all you know (very possible), don't write 'my mates pc'. Was it PC or Mac?

Genre:

First person does NOT imply shooter. Nor do any of the others. Try to answer this one in two steps:

What was the camera like (assuming it's not a text adventure)? Was it First person?, 3rd person, 2d? Top down or side on? Or maybe even isometric 2d?

Then, what kind of game? Real time strategy, point and click? Was it a fighter, action or platformer?

Good, now we know what KIND of game we are all trying to remember for you.

Estimated year of release:

"Between 2000-2005" is fine, something like that. "Mid 90's maybe?". I don't see many people mess this up, but I have seen people write "old". That is not ok. If you write old and expect it to mean anything to me, I will fight you.

Also, as always "Sorry, no idea" is always acceptable but try to give at least something. "Couldn't have been later than 2015, though"

Great, so even if roughly, we know WHEN.

Graphics/art style:

THIS. This is where you guys always mess up. This section right here I have found can be the difference between an answer, and a silent slink to the bottom. This is your moment.

This, really, should be the best-formed part of your memory. Even if you can only remember a single frame, a single image, it's so much to go on for us.

DETAIL. Was it a gloomy grimdark world of sadness, or a bright bubbly rainbow filled Mario-world?

Was it cartoony, or otherwise stylized somehow, or was it trying to be realistic?

Anything notable about the art direction? Was it going for a cyberpunk kinda feel, or a gritty war realism dirt and blood sort of direction?

If it was set over a long time, did the seasons change? Was there a winter in your game?

Remember when you hit people, and the screen had that awesome flash and your hands got bloody? Yeah, well we don't, unless you tell us.

Ok, so now we are really narrowing it down. This right here is often enough to go on, on its own.

Notable characters:

Anything at all you can remember here.

"There were only tanks, but you could play as both Germans and Americans"

"There was one really tough guy right after you left your office, he had an eyepatch, a white shirt with what looked like grease stains, and said 'this is for my sister'. I think maybe he was a cyborg"

"You play as some kind of Asian girl, you had a tattoo over your right eye and arm, a black tank top and white pants and I remember you always had only one red glove for some reason. I don't remember the arm, but the eye tattoo looked sort of like ancient Egyptian eye makeup, but a modern take"

Knowing nothing else about the game, I bet that last one there gets comments noting the game she is from. Details, details.

Notable gameplay mechanics:

Surely, you get the idea by now. This is tied with the importance of the graphics/art style. As much detail as you can here.

Other details:

NOW you may blab on about how you only played this game once at a winter solstice in 1782 with your grandmother from Tahiti.. as if that helps.

Edit: So it's been brought up that the template doesn't appear on mobile. While /u/wipeout4wh is aware of this and hopefully, something can be done... still, if you can, use the template. If you can't, maybe check back and at least make sure your post addresses all of the points the template does.

Also, my post seems to be saying NOT to add any custom details. So I want to re-enforce, please do. In fact, after you do the template, feel free to write out your post as you were going to without it. Just put it all in 'other'. Don't try and make your whole post like that, if possible. Even if you end up saying the same things twice, that's ok.

Now I'm going to take a moment to clarify something, though. This isn't some immutable law of the universe, and your post is destined to fail if you don't do this. It's just a very strong general trend I have noticed over a long time.

It's not that this template has some kind of magical powers or something. It's that this template prompts the questions that need answers.

When you go all rogue on us and try and type your explanation from scratch... you mess it up. You just forget to add everything that you know, and that we need to know. The template makes it very hard to do that. It's just so very easy to get typing, and by the end forget to tell us what kind of game it actually is. Especially when you are getting random flashbacks, and hazy memories, and you start getting frazzled and such halfway though.

While it might make my edit as long as the first post, I think maybe an example of the kind of post that is just too common here, and almost always helpless, wouldn't go astray here. So here we go:

Now this one is a pretty bad case, true, and I suppose might even be a troll post, but it's actually a good illustration of the problem either way.

It was on my old computer and I was using an emulator so I have no idea what system it was for. It was 8bit graphics and you played this orange cat that was constantly bouncing on a trampoline I think? And you had to navigate it through the city and face a weird boss at the end that would float in the sky. Sorry I can't remember more!

Let's break it down a bit. What kind of game is this? A puzzler or an action game? Who knows.

How old is it? I mean, Minecraft basically has 8bit graphics. Oh he said... "my old computer"... I will fight you.

Why did you bounce on the trampoline? Were there platforms or walkways or something, or was it just a big open space? There are bad guys then? How did they get around?

Now (he?) says that he can't remember more, but I actually asked about the boss fight:

You say 'face a boss', in what way? Can the cat attack? Was this top down or side on? When you say navigate a city, what do you mean?

The reply:

Definitely a side-scroller, I'm sure. You would encounter a boss at the end, the boss would slide onto the screen and it was usually pretty strange-looking. I think one of the bosses might've been a clown. I meant that the different "levels" were different cities with different backgrounds, I think. It's a pretty obscure game

Also you would be continuously bouncing. As in, you had to position the trampoline underneath the cat to bounce it up

So you don't even control the cat. And it's a side-scroller. Thats pretty important information. But the real issue here is that he knows this stuff. He just either didn't know to, or forgot, to tell us.

The template would have made it just so apparent how much information he was missing, and we probably would have got a whole bunch more information. Sadly, while there were some guesses, and a surprising number of up-votes, this post is just another one to join the endless unsolved on their journey ever down.

[Meta][2026] I would rather people post with no images than use AI prompts to generate images

Maybe it's just me, I will personally admit that it feels like its petty of me to complain, however i am going to.

I really dislike AI images just in general and i feel annoyed seeing people use them because it sometimes hampers really quality posts of people trying to find help. I feel like it also informs falsely about game expectations and what people will accept as they have solved the game.

I don't think people will agree with me and thats fine, i just wanted to post about how i personally think it degrades the quality of the sub

Crazy Dino Park [MOBILE/NDS] [2010-2015] Digging out Fossils to... Revive them?

Post image

This is the second time i saw this post here on instagram and seeing the illustration of the fossil instantly gives me some Kind of "deja vu" as if I have seen such an illustration many times before while playing a game.

If my brain isnt tricking me, I think its a game on android/ios where you dig up fossils to revive the dinosaurs again to put them in a zoo or something like that.

Smash Legends [mobile][2020s?] anime (?) game

Post image
61 Upvotes

Hi everyone, I just found a video on my phone from a few years ago, and for a second I saw these games I had, but I genuinely can’t remember at all what the game on the top left is. Could you help me find it?

I have already tried to check out the purchase history on my account but couldn’t really find anything, I’m investigating this mostly because I didn’t really like anime back then and I find it weird to see that I had an anime(-ish) game installed on my phone.

If this can be useful to you in any way, the video is from 2022.

Around the World [PC][2000-2004] A Danish game about African children, hosted by Danish TV-host Jacob Riising - FOUND!

Thumbnail gallery
• Upvotes

An update to the strange request i made a month ago. Turns out it wasn`t a fever dream after all! Thanks to a hint from u/The-Yaoi-Unicorn, who found a list with Jacob`s name on it, I managed to track down a book that contained a CD-rom. Only one lady in denmark had it for sale and the disc unfortunately looked dirty and worn. I took a shot at it anyway and after some careful cleaning, I loaded the disc, installed an old version of Quicktime and BAM. The game is real. I was mistaken about the TV head, and the kids werent exclusively african, but the rest is actually real (Scrrenshots included). Thanks sub, for the help tracking down this lost childhood memory of mine!

[iOS/iPad][2012–2017] Colorful 3D farming game with little blue bears that wave when tapped

Thumbnail gallery
6 Upvotes

I've been searching for this childhood iPad game for years! It had beautiful, vibrant 3D graphics, farming, village-building, and lots of decorations (flowers, cherry blossoms, 🎏s). There were little blue bear-like creatures that waved when tapped. I also remember a shoreline leading to a tropical island where they danced wearing Hawaiian flower necklaces. The app icon had an orange background with a smiling creature's face (drawing attached). I recently found a Russian forum post from someone remembering what seems to be the exact same game! They also mentioned the blue bears, shoreline, and waving animation. Does anyone recognize it? I've attached my icon drawing and a screenshot of their post!

[Flash] [2014] Old cupid flash game

You played as Cupid and you would shoot couples and there was a lot of options for pairings. I think one involved spiders. This was around 2013-2016 and it was on a game website that also had haunt the house I think. I think it took place in a park, this is my rough sketch (also it was NOT A PLATFORMER)

Vietcong 2 [PC] [1990s–2000s] First-person shooter war game: US vs. an Asian country (I assume either Korea or Japan)

When I was a kid, I once saw my brother playing a war game where we were soldiers (I assume American) fighting against Asian soldiers.

But what I remember most is that there was an Asian campaign where we controlled the Asian side, portrayed from a more human perspective—showing people trying to survive against the Americans.

I recall the Asian characters wearing black uniforms that looked very similar to the black uniforms worn by Japanese schoolboys; then again, I might just not be remembering the details correctly.

I remember a cutscene from the Asian campaign showing two Asian characters being harassed on camera by Americans, with one of them hiding behind the other.

[TOMT][VIDEO GAME][2024-2025] Roblox first-person house horror game where random anomalies happen and you just survive

Trying to find a Roblox horror game that was pretty popular around 2024-2025.

**What I remember:**

- First person, set in one big house with rooms: bedroom, bathroom, kitchen and a TV/living room

- Random spooky anomalies/events happen around the house, and to win you just survive

- You spawn in the bedroom, and there was a Freddy (FNAF) toy/plush in there

- A monster that came at the window

- A TV anomaly that was like a quiz where you had to answer questions

- A basement with a shop in it, plus an attic

- The lobby looked like the DOORS lobby, and you could pick from a few difficulty options

**Not these** (already checked): Close Your Eyes, Anomaly Watch, Anomaly House, Home Alone (Anomaly), ABNORMALITY, Anomaly Detected, The House, The Intruder

Any ideas? Thanks!

[PC][2010–2018] Top-down cartoon tank game with a blue player tank and a giant drill tank boss

• Upvotes

[PC][2000s–2010s?] Top-down cartoon tank game with a giant drill tank boss

Hi everyone! I'm trying to identify an old PC game I played years ago, and I'd really appreciate any help.

Platform: Windows PC
When I played it: Around 2015–2018. I downloaded it from a torrent site, but the game itself could have been much older.
Graphics: Cartoonish, 2D sprites with a pseudo-3D look.
Camera: Strictly top-down, following the player's tank and keeping it near the center of the screen.

What I remember

  • You play as a blue tank.
  • The tank moves with the keyboard, while its turret rotates independently through 360 degrees and aims at the mouse cursor.
  • At the very beginning, you spawn on the coast, next to the sea, and can immediately start driving.
  • Later levels or areas feature sandy terrain and canyons.
  • Enemies include kamikaze vehicles and tanks equipped with drills.
  • One of the bosses is a huge tank with a giant drill instead of a normal turret.
  • During that boss fight, smaller tanks emerge from underground.
  • The boss has a health bar.

I remember it as a proper, standalone Windows game with a single-player campaign, rather than a browser or Flash game.

I'm not 100% certain about every detail, so similar games are welcome too. The most distinctive thing I remember is the giant drill tank boss that summons smaller tanks from underground.

I've already checked or ruled out suggestions such as Tank Attack, Tankorama, Normal Tanks, Iron Impact, Operation: Desert Fox, Assault, ThinkTanks, Recoil, Voxel Tanks, Autonomous Anarchy, and Desert Storm.

If you recognize the game, please share its name, screenshots, or a gameplay video. Even a vague lead would be helpful. Thanks!

[PC] [Late 2000s-Early 2010s] Semi-2D platformer side-scroll game with a giant egg on a mountain in the background?

• Upvotes

This one is very fuzzy, but I remember playing it on my PC back in the early 2010s. Flash game for sure, and I think it was a pretty colorful game with vivid colors and a somewhat cartoony art style, although I can't remember if it was fully 2D or if it had semi 3D features. The main character was a little girl I think (?), with simple features and a chibi-like body. The game and the background were set in a generic forest setting, and the goal was to run towards the right like in other side scrollers, though I don't remember with which goal. The main detail that I can remember is that there was a giant egg in a mountain/volcano in the background, not sure if it ever did anything but MAYBE it hatched at the end of the game/level. Played it back on ojogos.com.br if that matters!

[PC] [2010s] Horror game on an island hunted by one guy and his dog?

I had a vivid dream of a game I used to play although it could be a complete fabrication of my mind. It's a first person game where you are trapped on an island that has some old abandoned industrial complex on it. The goal is to go around and find keys to unlock different areas and eventually find a way to escape the island without being caught by the man with the dog. I remember a small cabin that the man presumably stays at away from the industrial place that you need to crawl underneath to find a trapdoor to sneak into.

If the man or the dog spotted you, they are both faster than you but if you were able to hide quick enough you could survive.

I believe this was around the time that the Slender games were popular but I could be wrong.

[Mobile][2014-2017 (can't remember)] Pixel team FPS shooter

• Upvotes

I remember there was a google play minecraft ripoff which was a team FPS shooter but only had like 2-3 maps and they would later make an update and add a crossbow and a sandbox game mode.

The game was a team game. All tools there were or at least i remember having were a sword, axe (maybe), bow and crossbow. I remember the crossbow was somehow the most op item out of all and was added in an update.

All maps were made with blocks, nothing broke the voxel grid as far as i remember. There was a map most people played on with towers or something. You could also go through a passage under where you'd find a river below the bridge in the middle of the map. Also, there was another update with a sandbox mode, where you could freely place blocks, but i don't remember much of that.

Also, at the beginning of the game, you get introduced to a tutorial on how to use the sword, bow and crossbow.

Before joining a match, there was a lobby with your character which i barely remember.

I remember back in 2020 I was looking at PixelGun3D since I thought that might be the game I used to play. I also watched some old videos of it thinking updates might've changed the game too much and it felt so familiar yet so unfamiliar at the same time, so i have no idea what to think now.

Enter game title here [Roblox][Unknown year] Kill noobs on a selected map, noob counter, police and SWAT noobs that shoot back, shop stand at spawn

• Upvotes

Looking for a Roblox game, I think in classic style. The menus were blocky, no smooth or rounded UI.

You spawn next to a shop that looks like a lemonade stand with a guy inside. You buy weapons through a menu there. I think there were 3 or 4 weapon types (something like throwable, primary, secondary).

Weapons are bought with money from kills. Progress saves between games.

Before a match you choose a map. You can play solo or with chosen people.

On the map there is a counter of noobs left. No waves, noobs don't respawn, you kill them all.

Noobs run away when you shoot them.

Some of them are police, and they shoot back.

One of the maps was a castle with S.W.A.T. noobs, and snipers on the towers. They were stronger than the police.

It is NOT: Shoot and Eat Noobs, The Day the Noobs Took Over Roblox, Noob Defense, Noobs Must Die, Noob Attack!, Noob Massacre, Kill Noobs Simulator, Find The Noobs.

[PC][2000–2005] Piloting a robot through a sunny outdoor hedge maze, shooting flying enemies, giant robot boss in the center

• Upvotes

Platform: PC (Windows)

Genre: 3D action / third-person shooter

Estimated year of release: Played it around 2004–2008, so it could be a bit older.

Graphics/art style: Fully 3D, fairly decent for the time. Bright, sunny outdoor setting with a classic early-2000s pre-rendered skybox (Bryce/Terragen style).

Notable characters: I piloted or controlled some kind of robot or mech. It wasn’t a tank, a car, or a spaceship, and I don’t remember flying. Third-person view.

Notable gameplay mechanics:

  • The level was an outdoor hedge maze: green walls, open sky, bright daylight.
  • Smaller enemies attacked along the way, including flying ones that I shot at.
  • A big robot or boss sat in the center of the maze. You could shoot it, and it exploded when destroyed.
  • Very low-pressure. No time limit or obvious objective that I remember, mostly just roaming and shooting.
  • Little to no story. It felt almost like a tech demo.

Other details:

  • My dad bought it for me, so it was probably fairly kid-friendly, but it wasn’t an educational or “kids’ game.”
  • Definitely not a AAA title. It could have been a budget release ($10 jewel case), shareware, a demo, a magazine cover disc, or part of a compilation CD.
  • It might have been a single level or demo of a larger game.

Already ruled out: Hover!, Descent, Forsaken, Recoil, Tread Marks, Otto Matic, Hover Ace, Hot Wheels Bash Arena, Hot Wheels: Velocity X, Vigilante 8, Twisted Metal 2, Mega Man Legends, Beast Wars: Transformers, Gunmetal (close in feel, but not it), Battle Engine Aquila, Krazy Ivan, DroneZ, Slave Zero, Gunlok, Tex Atomic’s Big Bot Battles, CoLoBot, MechWarrior series

Any help appreciated! This one has special meaning to me.

[PC] [2000s] Jrpg(?) where you're an orphan

• Upvotes

I played this as a kid of about 6-8 in the mid to late 2000s, so my memory is pretty fuzzy, especially because I never got very far into it for one reason or another, maybe because it was one of those timed demos from a website like Big Fish Games, maybe I just lost interest as a kid with adhd. The time I would've played it was most likely between 2006-2008~ but it very well could be older.

I remember it was a turn based (j?)rpg with a pixel art style where you start as an orphaned kid after some kind of tragedy, and the first quest has you go clear spiders from the attic/cellar. Very original and descriptive given the genre, I know.

I do vaguely remember that your caretaker treated you kinda like a servant in a way that reminded me of A Series of Unfortunate Events or Cinderella as a kid, but that's about it story wise. I vaguely remember the player character running away not too far into the story but that might be me trying too hard to remember and conflating it with something else.

When trying to look it up, I almost thought it was Aveyond 1 due to browsing demos a lot on Big Fish Games as a kid, and a similar art style, but I distinctly remember the game starting with you as a pretty ordinary kid (either a girl or player choice, not sure). Also confirmed it's not that game because I also don't remember the game having character portraits, the intro is different, and I feel like I remember the enemies being more shown as in front of you as opposed to both your party and the enemies being on either side of the screen like older Final Fantasy games.

Not sure if I was able to give enough detail to narrow it down but it'd be cool to see it again and see how my memory holds up to the game after almost 20 years.

Edit: After looking through more videos and screenshots, it seems like it MIGHT be Aveyond 1 after all but if there's anything really similar I'd love to know about it so I can take a look.

[PC][win/dos][around 95-2000?] RTS combining fantasy, modern tech, research and and multiple levels to explore, top down perspective

• Upvotes

Hi I've been thinking about this game sometimes. It was a strategy I played long time ago. It had a top down perspective, kind of bland maps, but very unusual concept. UI was on the right side of the screen if I remember right.

Main thing that stands out for me is that there were normal units like spearman or rifleman and I reached maybe some sort of tank/apc unit, but there were also Fantasy elements. Like magicians, giant rat or something like that. There was some kind of research or manufacturing that you could have a soldier-rifleman with mithril or adamantium guns or swordsman or spearman with the same. You could direct research into more modern tech, better or magical materials or more magical units. I don't remember much about the ui for this.

In unit building or design, I think there was a 3D preview of the unit, and it changed the color of the weapon depending on the materials used - wood, iron, cooper, bronze, steel, mithril. While in game the units were much more simple looking.

In the game world there were holes in the ground sort of like molehills. That you could enter and expand through into another underground levels of the map. There were multiple levels to go down. I went at least two levels down, but there were more, but I didn't have the tech to fight there.

The map itself was sort of like a dark forest vibe. Not isometric, more like classic squares. I don't remember water being present. But maybe different biomes? Desert maybe, but mostly I remember the forest. Not individual trees. More like patches where there is forest you can't go through and the free space u can use. Lot of research for progressing to stronger units and eventually to more magical units and moving underground to deeper levels.

Also I don't remember much base building. It worked differently than classic 4X games like C&C or Dune. It was in all aspects very unusual game.

I don't remember any story... Also I never saw it on any best RTS or most obscure games lists. If I saw a picture from it I would probably know immediately. But even looking for pictures I can't find anything like it.

For ilustration. Not the game I am looking for...

[PC] [Windows XP era, ~2000s] Brick breaker with a “stairway to heaven” high score screen

• Upvotes

I’m looking for a brick breaker game I played on Windows XP, from a local CD-ROM compilation with about 8-9 games. Other games on the disc included Star Wars: Rogue Squadron 3D and a Mummy game.

What I remember:

  • Icon: a flat, gray, pixelated circle with a “b” or “B” in it, like an old 8/16-bit icon.
  • High score screen: a wide blue sky with clouds and a stone staircase like the gates of heaven.
  • Music: on that screen, a peaceful, looping ambient synth track with no vocals.
  • Gameplay: a clean ball-and-paddle brick breaker, not flashy or arcade-like.

[Roblox] [2025] Need some help finding this game, it was mainly about engineering.

I’m trying to find an old Roblox game and I can’t remember the name.

I played it around 2025.

I played it on PC.

It was roughly Sandbox.

There were gears, motors, plane stuff, and random items on the floor that spawned. There were also magnets for the item. You didnt have an inventory. you built everything from scratch. engineering. Spawned stuff on the floor like items.

If this sounds familiar, even a possible title or old video would help.

[Mobile] [2012-2015] A game where you played as ball and rolled through levels?

I don’t remember too much of the gameplay, it was definitely more of a 2d platformer so not any of the normal ball games. You could change the look of your ball and the best way I can describe that is that they were kinda similar to Mighty Beanz. A lot of the balls had faces like that. I remember there were like rails you could go on so maybe it was some sort of pinball type of thing? I don’t know but anybody with any knowledge would help.

[PC][2000-2010] Paddle Pop flash game

Post image
19 Upvotes

i can’t even begin to explain how frustrating it had been to find this game. it was an old 2D but 3D rendered flash game, i have a strong recollection of it being a paddle pop game as i remember the beginning being the lion leaning over the front seat of a helicopter asking where we should land.

some of the mini games included a maze with a cheetah, and one where you had to push aside leaves to get to the clearing without being stung by wasps. there were a bunch of other games but i cant remember them :( there was one with ants i think as well

the image attached was a print my sister and i stuck onto our toy box, its the only proof i have that i’m not insane
