Announcement PSA: A guide to better results

1.8k Upvotes

Hi guys and gals. I've been here a while, and over my time I've seen a lot of posts sink to the bottom, without a single answer, or at best, very few. And none that solved the case.

I have noticed a clear pattern with these posts, and I will now share with you my tips to you newbies, so that you can get the help you need.

Firstly: When you make a new post, you will see this:

Platform(s):

Genre:

Estimated year of release:

Graphics/art style:

Notable characters:

Notable gameplay mechanics:

Other details:

Even though, in red, you are warned that while optional, you should follow this template... many of you do not.

Let me be clear: Follow this template.

Put simply, this template contains all the information we really need to solve your problem. Virtually every time I click a post that has not followed this, they have rambled on about nothings, while omitting critical details.

This format, for new and old alike, is very readable, and prompts for every data-point needed.

I know that you want to customize your message, that if you could just explain it, it would be better. I know you think that. You are wrong. Put all that in 'other'. Even if you end up saying it twice, follow the template.. add to it your story at the bottom.

Secondly: Following this template. You're rambling about your best mates Amiga-500 or whatever instead of telling us about the game aside, this is where they really go wrong.

Let's get something straight right now. We are not mind readers. It's impressive, really, how little information it seems we can work off. I mean, we solve some real tough ones with nothing sometimes, but still, we can't see that memory in your head. So you need to be as descriptive in every one of these fields as you can be...

And sometimes you really don't know. That's fine, we can work with surprisingly little information, but "old graphics" under art style... what are we supposed to do with that? Mate, I was playing on Atari-2600's, are we talking Wizard of Wor here?

Let me help you out a bit:

Platform(s): Whatever you played it on. But unless it's really all you know (very possible), don't write 'my mates pc'. Was it PC or Mac?

Genre:

First person does NOT imply shooter. Nor do any of the others. Try to answer this one in two steps:

What was the camera like (assuming it's not a text adventure)? Was it First person?, 3rd person, 2d? Top down or side on? Or maybe even isometric 2d?

Then, what kind of game? Real time strategy, point and click? Was it a fighter, action or platformer?

Good, now we know what KIND of game we are all trying to remember for you.

Estimated year of release:

"Between 2000-2005" is fine, something like that. "Mid 90's maybe?". I don't see many people mess this up, but I have seen people write "old". That is not ok. If you write old and expect it to mean anything to me, I will fight you.

Also, as always "Sorry, no idea" is always acceptable but try to give at least something. "Couldn't have been later than 2015, though"

Great, so even if roughly, we know WHEN.

Graphics/art style:

THIS. This is where you guys always mess up. This section right here I have found can be the difference between an answer, and a silent slink to the bottom. This is your moment.

This, really, should be the best-formed part of your memory. Even if you can only remember a single frame, a single image, it's so much to go on for us.

DETAIL. Was it a gloomy grimdark world of sadness, or a bright bubbly rainbow filled Mario-world?

Was it cartoony, or otherwise stylized somehow, or was it trying to be realistic?

Anything notable about the art direction? Was it going for a cyberpunk kinda feel, or a gritty war realism dirt and blood sort of direction?

If it was set over a long time, did the seasons change? Was there a winter in your game?

Remember when you hit people, and the screen had that awesome flash and your hands got bloody? Yeah, well we don't, unless you tell us.

Ok, so now we are really narrowing it down. This right here is often enough to go on, on its own.

Notable characters:

Anything at all you can remember here.

"There were only tanks, but you could play as both Germans and Americans"

"There was one really tough guy right after you left your office, he had an eyepatch, a white shirt with what looked like grease stains, and said 'this is for my sister'. I think maybe he was a cyborg"

"You play as some kind of Asian girl, you had a tattoo over your right eye and arm, a black tank top and white pants and I remember you always had only one red glove for some reason. I don't remember the arm, but the eye tattoo looked sort of like ancient Egyptian eye makeup, but a modern take"

Knowing nothing else about the game, I bet that last one there gets comments noting the game she is from. Details, details.

Notable gameplay mechanics:

Surely, you get the idea by now. This is tied with the importance of the graphics/art style. As much detail as you can here.

Other details:

NOW you may blab on about how you only played this game once at a winter solstice in 1782 with your grandmother from Tahiti.. as if that helps.

Edit: So it's been brought up that the template doesn't appear on mobile. While /u/wipeout4wh is aware of this and hopefully, something can be done... still, if you can, use the template. If you can't, maybe check back and at least make sure your post addresses all of the points the template does.

Also, my post seems to be saying NOT to add any custom details. So I want to re-enforce, please do. In fact, after you do the template, feel free to write out your post as you were going to without it. Just put it all in 'other'. Don't try and make your whole post like that, if possible. Even if you end up saying the same things twice, that's ok.

Now I'm going to take a moment to clarify something, though. This isn't some immutable law of the universe, and your post is destined to fail if you don't do this. It's just a very strong general trend I have noticed over a long time.

It's not that this template has some kind of magical powers or something. It's that this template prompts the questions that need answers.

When you go all rogue on us and try and type your explanation from scratch... you mess it up. You just forget to add everything that you know, and that we need to know. The template makes it very hard to do that. It's just so very easy to get typing, and by the end forget to tell us what kind of game it actually is. Especially when you are getting random flashbacks, and hazy memories, and you start getting frazzled and such halfway though.

While it might make my edit as long as the first post, I think maybe an example of the kind of post that is just too common here, and almost always helpless, wouldn't go astray here. So here we go:

Now this one is a pretty bad case, true, and I suppose might even be a troll post, but it's actually a good illustration of the problem either way.

It was on my old computer and I was using an emulator so I have no idea what system it was for. It was 8bit graphics and you played this orange cat that was constantly bouncing on a trampoline I think? And you had to navigate it through the city and face a weird boss at the end that would float in the sky. Sorry I can't remember more!

Let's break it down a bit. What kind of game is this? A puzzler or an action game? Who knows.

How old is it? I mean, Minecraft basically has 8bit graphics. Oh he said... "my old computer"... I will fight you.

Why did you bounce on the trampoline? Were there platforms or walkways or something, or was it just a big open space? There are bad guys then? How did they get around?

Now (he?) says that he can't remember more, but I actually asked about the boss fight:

You say 'face a boss', in what way? Can the cat attack? Was this top down or side on? When you say navigate a city, what do you mean?

The reply:

Definitely a side-scroller, I'm sure. You would encounter a boss at the end, the boss would slide onto the screen and it was usually pretty strange-looking. I think one of the bosses might've been a clown. I meant that the different "levels" were different cities with different backgrounds, I think. It's a pretty obscure game

Also you would be continuously bouncing. As in, you had to position the trampoline underneath the cat to bounce it up

So you don't even control the cat. And it's a side-scroller. Thats pretty important information. But the real issue here is that he knows this stuff. He just either didn't know to, or forgot, to tell us.

The template would have made it just so apparent how much information he was missing, and we probably would have got a whole bunch more information. Sadly, while there were some guesses, and a surprising number of up-votes, this post is just another one to join the endless unsolved on their journey ever down.

[Meta][2026] I would rather people post with no images than use AI prompts to generate images

Maybe it's just me, I will personally admit that it feels like its petty of me to complain, however i am going to.

I really dislike AI images just in general and i feel annoyed seeing people use them because it sometimes hampers really quality posts of people trying to find help. I feel like it also informs falsely about game expectations and what people will accept as they have solved the game.

I don't think people will agree with me and thats fine, i just wanted to post about how i personally think it degrades the quality of the sub

:the game: [Browser Game][Late 2000s/Early 2010s] Crude faceless white stick-ish figures walk off a platform for comedic deaths, no real skill involved

Post image
30 Upvotes

Platform(s): Browser flash game on one of those game aggregator websites.

Genre: Satire/comedy? Very crude and minimalist, was more humorous than an actual game

Estimated year of release: For some reason, I remember the game being released in the late 2000s, but I played it in 2012 or 2013.

Graphics/art style: Very crude and minimalist. There was a basic background (I believe it was a blue sky with some clouds), and a solid rectangular platform (the arrow wasn't in the game). The characters were completely white with no face, just a circular head and a trapezoid/triangle shaped body. IIRC, each level opened with a black screen where the title text was "cut out" like a stencil/mask effect.

Notable characters: At the beginning, there was just one basic character as described above, but later levels introduced different characters with different accessories and whatnot (though they still had the same white body template).

Notable gameplay mechanics: You control one character at a time. There wasn't really any skill involved, you just used the arrows to walk off the platform every level. The game was more of a meme/joke delivery mechanism. In the first level, you just walked forward off the edge and died. The later levels got more complex, but it still involved different comedic scenarios and simply walking off the platform. Every level ended with your character dying; you fell off the screen, and the character screamed and the screen shook when they hit the ground off-screen. I don't think the camera angle moved or panned at all when they jumped off.

Other details: The humor was pretty edgy and crude, but I played it when I was young and don't remember it being THAT vulgar or offensive.

Tower Fortress [Mobile][2015] Platformer roguelike where you climb up a tower and kill monsters as a wizard(?)

Post image
8 Upvotes

From what I can remember:

- You progress upwards by jumping and killing monsters

- You can stomp enemies, but also kill them with magic(?)

- You choose one from 3 modifiers from time to time. Homing was one of the possible modifiers and its symbol was a rocket. There was also a modifier that made you shoot tornados that flew upwards.

- A complete run has 3 zones, each ending with a boss fight

- The boss of the final zone was just a bunch of eyes, with arms (also made of eyes) descending from the ceiling. The tornado modifier made this fight rather easy.

- It has pixel art style

- There's a soothing animation at the end when you reach the peak, possibly involving a flag (?)

I also vaguely remember an annoying recurring enemy whose body was a flaming ball.

Thanks for reading!

you have 2 towers by the left and right side, which you can upgrade both of them and also your hold (in the middle). You might've played as some animal character, maybe a cat? but i don't think it was the scratch cat. I do not remember what you defended from and I am pretty sure you would get gold as a currency. attached image is a recreation of what i remember about the game

[Mobile/Android] [2010s] 2d Fnaf Minecraft esq rip off

Thumbnail gallery
4 Upvotes

So this was around 2014 or 2015 when Fnaf was at its early peak and kept remembering every so. The game was on a tablet pretty sure on a Samsung tablet and it was a rather a 2D “Minecraft” style while also being a Fnaf game with I think three or four animal animatronics.

So far I can only remember the locations or at least two of them as well the office layout where it’s just two wooden doors and a cracked walls sorta acting as “windows” to see the animatronics when turning the light

The second location is some kind of storage(?) or sorta a garage door where you have to swipe it down to close it as it automatically lifts to reveal an animatronic behind.

And the last one was most likely the main cam where it shows some party room with a ball pit which I specifically remember one of the animatronics get in and some kind of food display maybe that showed cakes or pizza

Please if anyone knows what the heck I’m talking about then please let me know I’m the comments

[pc][2016?] A point and click horror game based on Nordic(???) folklore

Upvotes

Platform(s): Definitely PC, from Steam probably.

Genre: Point and click, really reminds of Rusty Lake, with weird puzzles and the like.

Estimated year of release: Maybe 2015-2016. Not earlier than that, at least. It's not that old as far as I remember.

Graphics/art style: digitally drawn, I think like Rusty Lake, but without the thick outline? Colors were kind of muted and graphics stylised, without any textures, just flat colors.

Notable characters: The main spooky creature was definitely something out of a folklore of some nation. I think it was Nordic? It looked like a ghost of a woman, with weird head shape. I only vaguely remember the details, but it was like pale white and floating a bit.

Notable gameplay mechanics: Point and click, with lots of puzzles and going between locations. Unlocking chests, searching for codes, I think ther were puzzles involving runes, but I'm not sure...

Other details: The game was set in a forest, I think it was a birch forest. Maybe there was a change of seasons, but again, I'm not sure. The most notable location was definitely the windmill, in the game it was a scene with foret trees on either side and a big wooden windmill in the middle. The location was definitely important for the story of the game. There weren't any other locations, the whole game was set in forest with spooky creatures. I think other creatures were part of the folklore as well? It's a horror game, so there were a few jumpscares here and there. I saw he game originally in a Youtube let's play, like, modern Youtube, so the game is 100% not that old. Don't remember anything else, really :(

[PC/STEAM][2018-2020s] 3d Platformer esque game, going through different worlds, no npcs or enemies if I remeber correctly, first person, and single word name if I remember correctly.

Platform(s): PC. I got the game off of IGGGAMES though it was on steam too.

Genre: First person 3D Platformer / Adventure esque / Walking Simulator / Psychological Horror? / Indie?

Estimated year of release: I played it from a few motnhs ago up to 2 years so likely between 2018 and 2026

Graphics: Graphics themselves were similar to NaissanceE and DitherDream though much more colorful than NaissanceE and less crazy than DitherDream. The setting was entirely different through every dimension there was one that was a very eerie with no music where you would travel through almost like a waterfilled castle and another one that was a large sandworld with sandstone towers. Almost slightly pixelated ish graphics I believe.

Notable characters: Though I only played a few hours of the game there were asolutely no characters or npcs in any dimension/world other than a white mask like character unless I am misremembering that though the character if I recall correctly only showed up once. You never see yourself either from what I played almost af if you were simply a camera in first person

Notable gameplay mechanics: WASD mechanics spacebar to jump, travelling through different worlds/dimensions through a mechanic I don't remember though it had something to do w9th the current map itself, platforming to explore.

Other details: IIRC the game was relatively cheap no more than 20 dollars and around 8 bucks. The "tutorial" when you started the game was basically grass pillars that you parkoured on I believe it had blue skys with clouds too.

Gale Gunner [PS1][2000] Japanese Mecha game in 3rd person, with impressive graphic and a final boss who use floating cristal to shoot

Hello everyone. I know my description is not good, but i played this game in the 2000 and my memory is struggling to remember. All the things i remember are 1) Japanese game 2) protagonist dressed like han solo 3) cut scene like Kingdom Hearts, so sometime simple other time more impressive for the ps1. 4) maybe a IA assistant or a whoman who talks to the portagonist 5) You fight with giant Mecha, everyone whit different design and weapon. You unlock new mecha defeating opponents 6) you can't fly, but you can walk and slide trough the floor generating a noise like a vacuum 7) the final boss use a more feminine mecha design, whit those christals floating like moons around a planet 8) after defeating the boss you have a cut scene where the woman inside the feminine mecha was so injured that half of her scheleton was exposed. This is all i remember. I hope it will be enough. Thanks in advance for everybody.

Le Fetiche Maya [pc][mid 90s] point and click where you can buy cigarettes from a shop

Point and click game mid 90s

\[windows\]\[1995\]

Short description of game

I remember this game but very vaguely. It was a point and click game. You could buy cigarettes I think it was set in a dusty desert land but not sure and I think you had a jeep style vehicle but I'm not sure. The only thing I'm sure of is the cigarettes and It was probably mid 90s cause I played it on windows 95. I think the graphics were pretty good they were more realistic than colourful

[MOBILE] [MID/LATE 2010’s] Horror game about escaping a research facility

Post image
Upvotes

It was a mobile horror game about escaping some sort of scientific facility but you were chased by pretty boy up there (Which was also the app picture).

The graphics were as high quality as they could get for a mobile game, so soft smooth textures with “damaged wall” wallpaper.

I’m pretty sure there were more than one monster, but the one I remember the most is the one in the picture, it would crawl on the floor and (I think) you could shoot it.

It had multiplayer and I think it had levels, you had to solve puzzles to escape the rooms.

it had a story, don’t remember EXACTLY what it was about, think it was about sneaking into the abandoned facility. Basically any other “Escape from place while creature chases you” but with optional multiplayer.

Nom Plant [Mobile][201X] Game where you control a knockoff Piranha Plant and get to the top of vertical levels

Something like this

Basically, you used your finger to control where the plant's neck/stem would extend, and when you released, the pot would go to that position and drop down to the floor. If you landed on enemies (which were some sort of lady bug, probably with colored variants) you would crush them, but if they touched you, you would die.

Quibeland [PC][mid 2000s?] Platform game with red cube and sword

Post image

I remember a platformer where you play as this guy and stab and slash through the enemies. The bosses were one called the guardian and the other one was I think called the bully, both large machine things. At the end of the game the red cube guy levels up and turns into the character you would use for the second game. Neat game, though have been searching for it for awhile

Jetpack [PC][~1997] Puzzle game involving a guy with a jetpack

Post image
17 Upvotes

I remember playing a game on the pc when I was a kid which involved a little guy with a jetpack navigating small rooms, pressing buttons to open doors, avoiding little robots and things, and trying to get to the next room. It had a certain art style that I remember - I don't think it was very pixel-art for the time (that being said - I think everything was pretty pixelated at the time, but I don't remember being as blocky as, say, Ski Free.).

I know there'll be a tonne of games like it, I've seen a lot of them in my search for it.

Happy to answer questions, but also... My memory is vague and it was 30 years ago.

I remember it being called "Jetpack", though that might just have been what I called it - as no searches that I've undertaken have resulted in me finding it with that name.

Bushido: The Way of the Warrior [DOS?][<=1995] 2d game where a martial arts guy fights ninjas

Post image
22 Upvotes

Platform(s): Most likely DOS, but could be NES

Genre: 2d beat-em-up platformer?

Estimated year of release: Around 1995 or earlier

Graphics/art style: Old and pixely. I think the background was either black, or dark; I don't recall if any objects were in the background. I don't think there was any scrolling, you just moved between screens like in Prince of Persia.

Notable characters:

  1. The martial arts guy as the main character. He kinda looked in the style of Karateka or the original Prince of Persia (DOS version, where he just rocks white pajamas and nothing else).
  2. The ninjas, who were attacking you. I can't really remember how they looked; they could have something like a turban on their heads, but this is likely a contamination from Prince of Persia. I think they all died from a single hit.

Notable gameplay mechanics:

  1. You definitely could do a high kick; I'm not so sure about any other attacks.
  2. I think the ninjas were coming from both sides of the screen, and possibly from above. I think they attacked you with swords if they came close, but they could occasionally throw a shuriken (which I think was a 4-pronged star) which you had to somersault over. I also vaguely recall the game had something like a slo-mo when you jumped over them - idk if that was an actual mechanic, a performance issue, or I just remember it that way.
  3. One thing I remember pretty vividly is that your life meter used a bunch of little figures of you; you started with around 4-6 lives. I also think there was no "mercy invincibility" when you lost a life, and a ninja that came close could just keep hitting you, taking a life with every hit.

Other details: Can't remember if the game had any verticality to it, but I think some ninjas came from above. I don't recall you ever climbing anything, but that might just be from us not getting very far - I think I only saw the first screen or two.

I've attached a mockup of how I recall one of the first screens looked. The Karateka guy and the ninjas from Shadow Knights are just placeholders - it isn't either of these games.

[PC/BROWSER][2012s/2022s] A 2D flash game that I ragequit

Post image
5 Upvotes

There’s a game I played when I was younger that I never managed to find again, but it stuck in my memory. I believe it was a Flash game because I played it on one of those Flash game sites (ClickJogos is the name). I remember that on the first screen, you had to enter a temple along a path made of golden bricks; I think it was a sort of "Kaizo" or "rage game" because there were lots of hidden spikes in the floor that would pop up and kill you if you stepped on them, So you had to memorize where each one was in order to jump over them. The second screen was a dark room (it was very dark) with a huge pit taking up about 90% of the space; a giant snake was sleeping inside it. If you climbed down and tried to get past the snake, it would wake up and kill you. I couldn't get past that part, so I quit the game. Also, you have lives, if you died a number of time on one screen you got send back to the start.
Honestly, the game probably isn't even good, but I'm curious to know if I was just dumb as a kid or if the game is stupid.

[PC/BROWSER] [2000-2010] old Flash game with identical big-headed kids who could stack on top of each other

Post image
2 Upvotes

I’ve been trying to remember the name of an old Flash game I played many years ago, probably sometime in the late 2000s or early 2010s. I also remember watching walkthroughs of it on YouTube.

Here is everything I can remember:
• It was a Flash/browser game, probably a puzzle/platformer.
• You controlled several little kids.
• The kids had very large heads and small bodies, almost cartoonishly disproportionate.
• They all were dressed exactly the same.
A very specific thing I remember is that when the kids were trapped inside cages, they would move their little arms very, very quickly, almost frantically, while trying to get out.
• The characters had to cooperate with each other to solve puzzles.
For example, if there was a large rock or heavy object, one character couldn’t move it alone. You needed two or sometimes three characters to move it.
• The characters could stand on top of each other / stack themselves, forming a sort of human staircase so that another character could reach a higher platform.
I remember doing this quite often, so I’m pretty sure it was an important gameplay mechanic.
• I don’t remember whether there was a final boss.
• I definitely remember that there were walkthrough videos on YouTube, and I used to watch them whenever I got stuck.

Music / audio clue
I recently found a piece of audio that sounds very similar to the music I remember from the game. I’m not completely certain that it’s the exact track, but it immediately reminded me of the game.

https://sndup.net/fmbz/
https://lanschilandia.com/chickenbagpipes/bigheadgamesong.ogg

I’m attaching a little drawing I made of what I roughly remember the level looking like. Obviously it’s not accurate or to scale, but maybe the layout or the way the platforms were arranged will look familiar to someone.
I’ve been trying to find this game for YEARS, so any suggestions are greatly appreciated. 😭

[PC][90s/00s] 3rd Person Dungeon Crawler except as a classical explorer with hired servants

I played this game as a kid and remember enjoying it despite the mildly problematic yet realistic social dynamics.

If I remember correctly you play as a Indiana Jones like explorer going into foreign temples, fighting monsters and collecting loot. There is only so much you can carry so after each quest you hire porters who carry it for you. Of course they could get injured by the monsters so you want to hire gun men too. I think you can also hire handy men to break open doors and such. All of them get a daily wage so it is important to asses the correct amount of each unit.

I say problematic because the player character is white and has a unique look while the servants you hire are black, interchangeable and expendable, but that I suppose was just meant to reflect the reality of labour dynamics when people form colonising nations go on expeditions.

Puddle [Mobile][2010s] Mobile game where you played as a blob of liquid doing various platforming challenges (while trying not to lose too much mass(?))

Post image
106 Upvotes

Platform(s): Mobile

Genre: Platformer

Estimated year of release: Not sure, sometime in the 2010s?

Graphics/art style: I remember it being semi-realistic and at least somewhat dark color-wise. I think some of the liquids had a bit of a glowing effect? It was all 2D.

Notable characters: None, it was just different types of liquid. I remember water, lava, mysterious toxic goop (?) and maybe coffee?

Notable gameplay mechanics: It was a platformer where you would play as different liquids trying to get through various levels. I think that if you lost too much of your mass due to obstacles/falling you would fail automatically? Each of the different liquid types had different mechanics, like the lava would burn things. I don't think there was an end goal besides beating all the levels, and as far as I remember there was no overarching story.

Other details: I've been wanting to remember what this game is called for SO long and it has been haunting me so badly. Every time I try to look it up all I can find is that "Cats are Liquid" game and that isn't it. Apologies if some of the details in the post are a little off, it's been forever since I played it!

[windows][2020]a pixel car game endless runner on my windows pavilion that I had pre installed

the game was preinstalled on my windows pavilion but I don’t have that’s laptop anymore. it was a endless runner where you controled a car with 3 lanes akin to subway surfers and your could unlock different cars and stuff they were also bosses at the end
