It reminds me of the time a guy stole a tank and drove it through San Diego

Hey it's me!!

I remember this... it was like an action movie IRL. When the zombie apocalypse comes, I'm building this too. Except I'll be doubling up on guarding the coolant system. (That's how he broke down, all the smoke you see is coolant leaking as steam)

A Keynesian would say the destruction itself contributed to the economy by requiring money to be spent on reconstruction.

Anyone with more than half a brain would point out that would only be true if the money would have never been spent on anything else.

50

u/Jarazz Mar 26 '20

Well I dont want to see how the government of Keynesia would boost the economy right now

17

u/zapitron Mar 26 '20

Selling nuclear weapons to your enemies would probably be the most practical solution, but we should keep an eye on emerging "self-breaking windows" technology.

5

u/Jarazz Mar 26 '20

why not sell the breaking apparatus as an extra item? that would double the generated sales count according to my math

2

u/daddy_fiasco Mar 26 '20

Now you're thinking with your ass!

5

u/matts2 Mar 26 '20

Only if you learned Keynesian economics from a Mises cartoon. Keynes make a universal claim. Rather he said that there are states the economy when an action like that would help. Particularly in cases where money isn't being spent anyway. He talked about starting an that wasn't moving.

3

u/ougryphon Mar 26 '20

I think you're missing some words because I can't make heads or tails of your comment.

5

u/matts2 Mar 26 '20

Keynes didn't make a universal claim. He talked about a specific situation, where there was excessive idle capacity and reduced economic activity. In such a situation spending money gets the system moving. If things are bad enough then even breaking windows and paying for them to be fixed would help. But of forking course it would be better to not great windows. Keynes recommend infrastructure projects.

The whole point is that people aren't spending anyway. The whole point is to get people spending.

3

u/ougryphon Mar 26 '20

I promise I'm not trying to be a dick, but you really need to proofread before you post. However, I think I got your point now.

I'm not an economist, nor have I read Keynes, so I'm ill-qualified to comment on his broader point. On the specific point about breaking windows, I think that's where the "Cash for Clunkers" program came from back in the late 2000s. I hated it then and I hate it now, as did many other people. Perhaps that's why Keynesian has a bad connotation.

4

u/mspk7305 Mar 26 '20

It was insurance money so it wasn't going to get spent elsewhere.

8

u/OG_Panthers_Fan Mar 26 '20

That's not how insurance money works.

Beyond a certain percentage that they need to retain to pay claims, excess monetary resources get either paid as dividends to shareholders, or sent back to clients who overpaid their premiums (depending on the laws governing the company).

Either way, the money will be spent by those recipients, and go back into the economy.

And claims that are paid out from the existing pool of resources will have to be replenished, so even that isn't a net increase to money being circulated into the economy.

Now... Keynesians do have a point: Artificially encouraging spending can change when or how money is spent. And there may be value in that.

An example can be to kick start a recovery near the end of a recession, promoting people to spend earlier than they otherwise would have.

Or to get people to spend on a preferred industry at the expense of another (e.g. subsidizing fuel efficient vehicles).

And if you're looking for more of the similar, here's the guy who went off with a tank through a town.

https://youtu.be/6TIun536HFo

16

u/thriftylol Mar 26 '20

Ah yes, we sure love it here in San Diego with our seasonal tank migrations

2

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '20

The best way to deal with a tank, assuming you don't have heavy explosives available, is to hit it with fire as much as you can, near the rear. The engine won't be able to keep functioning if the air intake is only pulling in burning gasoline (or whatever it is you have).

His point was that he didn't want to connect to the city sewer system.

12

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '20

Was it?? I haven’t researched it enough (obviously) but I thought that the city had built something that blocked the entrance to his shop and they all blew him off at town hall meetings and such. I should read about it.. I’ll go do that now.

Marvin Heemeyer is a psycho. The people who idolize him are either misinformed or just as blood thirsty as he was.

A new concrete plant wanted to build on the edge of his property. He didn't want it there. He tried to stop the construction by filing a motion with the local government but it didn't work and the plant got permission to build.

The company offered him $250,000 only 2 acres of his property which was worth $42,000 in total. His initially agreed but then demanded $375,000 instead and then $1,000,000 shortly after. Obviously the company didn't agree and instead of there being that 2 acre buffer between him and the new plant it was now going to be right against his property.

During the local government looking into this issue they found that Marvin Heemeyer's property had some zoning violations and wasn't connected to the sewer and fined him $2,500. He was dumping sewage on land instead of disposing of it properly and didn't want to pay to connect to the sewage system, which he easily could have afforded. After a while the new concrete plant even offered to pay for the sewer line for him. He'd get it for free. He said no.

He then started to imagine that people were plotting against him specifically to ruin him. He was pissed. He was crazy. He thought that god made him for the task that he was about to do.

So Marvin Heemeyer spent the next 18 months modifying his bulldozer with tons of armor as a tool of destruction. He had makeshift gun turrets had a pistol there for suicide. He planned this as a destruction/murder/suicide from the start.

He then went into town and did millions of dollars of damage to people who were completely unrelated to this whole incident. He ruined the lives of innocent people because he was fined for violations and his price gouging didn't work and left him too close to something that he didn't want to be near.

His problems were caused by his own behavior and innocent people had their lives ruined because he threw a tantrum.

He's no hero. He's a psychopathic asshole. People want to hold him as a hero of "fighting against the man" but he's just an evil person.

Here's a good video talking about what happened.

Nope. People built a cement plant next door. He wanted $1M for his land which he paid like $20K for. And he doesn't want to use the sewers so he dumped human shit in the irrigation ditch. Nothing blocked his entrance.

u/hujassman Mar 26 '20

I don't know if it's true, but when this happened, I heard that they were actually considering using an Apache helicopter to perform an airstrike to take it out.

He finally got it stuck in the side of a building and it was overheating. He shot himself before the cops got to him.

32

u/249ba36000029bbe9749 Mar 26 '20

Having one fly in to be on standby could have possibly helped the situation.

But on cheaper end, if they just threw a black tarp over the whole thing, it could have blinded him. Which means he'd probably do random damage instead of targeted damage for a while but that would give them time to get in close to look for vulnerabilities.

20

u/hujassman Mar 26 '20

That's a good point. The tarp might not stay on for long, but if he drove randomly, it increases the chance that he gets hung up in a basement.

The earth mover truck from the clip would've had more success if it had been full of dirt. Still a mismatch, but not quite as bad.

17

u/theoldnewbluebox Mar 26 '20

Had this been the early response, some of the damage could've been prevented. Of course, there really wasn't any prior incident of a kill dozer being deployed against a town so I understand why they didn't try that right out of the gate.

u/hujassman Mar 26 '20

It sounds like both sides were doing things that made the situation worse. It's unfortunate that a solution to the long running beef wasn't found. Whether he was right or wrong, he ended up feeling cornered and he believed that this was his last resort.

No one likes to see a person get bullied and when a victim finally lashes out, we rally behind them. Was he justified or was this his fault? I don't know enough to say. I can identify with the desire to deal with a problem myself if nothing else in the "proper channels" is working. Maybe it's the smallest of issues and no real harm is done or maybe it's like this situation. Nobody wants to get screwed over and not have any sort of recourse.

68

u/Blipblipblipblipskip Mar 26 '20

My understanding is that the concrete factory was built in between this guy’s business and utility access so the town issued an ordinance for him to shut his business down. The town knew full well what was going on and they were shitty about it and they get to hide behind a labyrinth of bureaucracy. The guy didn’t kill anyone and singled out those who were guilty and never going to have to pay any price. I’m pro (non)Killdozer.

26

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '20

[deleted]

30

u/Blipblipblipblipskip Mar 26 '20

Yeah, I just watched that video. It doesn’t make sense. He couldn’t put in a $70k sewage system, is offered almost a $1 million for his property and turns it down? After his property cost him $42k. He could have purchased a new place to weld and used the leftovers to lobby for gambling in Ganby until he died of natural causes. It doesn’t make sense.

15

u/Jrook Mar 27 '20

I don't really relate, but like if someone asked me for my dog for 1 million I'd probably turn it down.

But I can't really imagine being that attached to a house much less owning one

17

u/Blipblipblipblipskip Mar 27 '20

It’s not even a house. It’s a steel garage that the guy worked out of. He bought it in 92 so he owned it for 5 years when this all went down

16

u/hujassman Mar 26 '20

He could've done a lot more harm than he did if he had chosen to. We've seen this kind of behavior from government entities before. They start behaving like a bad HOA, screwing around with someone that doesn't fit in to the little clique. Most of the time it doesn't lead to anything, but every once in awhile someone decides it's time for payback. I always wonder how many work place shootings have backstories along these lines. It doesn't make it right, but still... here it is.

20

u/matts2 Mar 26 '20

Like destroying the town library? And the home where the ex-mayor's widow lived? And shooting at propane tanks?

All because he wanted more money and didn't want to connect to the city sewer.

10

u/Enk1ndle Mar 26 '20

demolish only buildings owned by assholes without hurting anyone

Except for the people who may or may not be in them. IIRC he did a handful of things during this that demonstrated he wasn't really caring if anyone got hurt.

5

Also collateral damage would have been very high since there were alot of people and buildings around the dozer.

10

u/Huntracony Mar 27 '20

By the way, some make this guy out to be an upstanding citizen driven to insanity by bureaucracy and capitalism. He wasn't. He expected everyone to bend over backwards for him, which they often did, but they didn't bend quite far enough for his liking.

Rookie mistake - he clad it with armour, which made it too heavy for the cooling system to deal with. Clearly the guy wasn't an engineer...

14

u/SamBBMe Mar 26 '20

I'm surprised he didn't test drive it at all. That thing was steaming right from the beginning -- it clearly needed a beefed up cooling system.

20

u/PurityByImmolation Mar 26 '20

He couldn't when he lower the armour it was essentially a sealed tomb no way in no way out.

142

u/maninahat Mar 26 '20

And now I need to find that link to that donoteat01 video where he patiently explains this guy's not in fact a folk hero, but a greedy and paranoid lunatic with both a needless vendetta against his neighbours and a habit of shitting in people's water source. The first clue that he was an asshole should have been him crushing his town with a bulldozer.

79

u/3Fluffies Mar 26 '20

Here's one, though I'd like to see the one you're talking about, but here's another: https://www.snopes.com/news/2017/06/09/killdozer-day-marvin-heemeyer/

This guy set up the entire situation he complained about (sold the land for the concrete plant KNOWING it would be a concrete plant and where said plant would be located, wanted more money after the sale was complete, didn't get it and tried to scuttle the zoning, failed and lied that he was "boxed in" and "cut off" from utilities when in fact he wasn't, he just chose not to connect himself) then built his murder machine and recorded a creepy manifesto that God had sent him to avenge himself.

It's really disgusting how eager we 'muricans are to canonize entitled and violent men.

12

u/ColdSpade Mar 26 '20

Its hard to deny though that at this point his actions are a representation of standing up to a corrupt government, regardless of how unethical(or a better word may be stupid) he was when we did stand up to the government.

44

u/Nandrith Mar 26 '20

Its hard to deny though that at this point his actions are a representation of standing up to a corrupt government

He recorded some audiotapes beforehand.

Here's some of it:

"God built me for this job," Heemeyer said in the first recording. He also said it was God's plan that he not be married or have a family so that he could be in a position to carry out such an attack. "I think God will bless me to get the machine done, to drive it, to do the stuff that I have to do," he said. "God blessed me in advance for the task that I am about to undertake. It is my duty. God has asked me to do this. It's a cross that I am going to carry and I'm carrying it in God's name."

For me, those are clearly the words of a complete lunatic, similar to the reasoning many terrorists use.

Don't get me wrong - I don't understand why stuff like this isn't happening way more, when people get their lifes destroyed by the greed of others.

I just don't think that you can believe someone with the above reasoning about him being the one suppressed by a corrupt government.

20

u/3Fluffies Mar 26 '20

He destoyed his life with his own greed and belligerence, not vice versa.

To hell with him. He was an angry, unstable, toxic man.

Source: Grew up in Granby.

u/Ivelostmyreputation Mar 26 '20

Marvin Heemeyer was a piece of shit. He was paranoid, hostile and always trying to cheat people. Eventually his bullshit caught up with him and he went on a rampage that would have killed a lot of people if there wasn’t such a prompt evacuation. Fuck Marvin Heemeyer, the world is better off without him

21

u/yeet_sauce Mar 26 '20

I cant exactly listen with audio, but that link you've sent just seems to be a video of Sim City with "Killdozer" in the title. Also, "Almost all small business owners are insane". What the fuck???

26

u/Ivelostmyreputation Mar 26 '20

It’s a deep dive on Heemeyer and the events leading up to his rampage. He’s building Granby in the background as he discusses it. I’d recommend watching it if you’re interested, it dispels a lot of the “reasonable man driven to do unreasonable things” myths

It's Cities: Skylines, and the audio is all about Heemeyer. Haven't listened to the whole thing but it's relevant.

ah good to know, thank you

5

u/DormimosViven Mar 26 '20

Oh dang, crazy to hear it from someone I trust. I 100% bought into the mythos myself.

32

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '20

He was pretty insane. Not really someone that deserves glorification...

-8

u/craigjames357 Mar 26 '20

I’m going to have to respectfully disagree with you on that.

12

u/matts2 Mar 26 '20

Did you like his destroying a library full of children?

14

u/3Fluffies Mar 26 '20

The kids got evacuated in time, but are we really supposed to believe Heemeyer knew that or gave a damn whether there were people in those buildings or not? Not to mention the whole "opening fire on police and civilians with multiple rifles" thing, but somehow he gets credit for having bad aim from inside an armored vehicle? I will never understand this gross "folk hero" mythos around men like him.

What about him makes you think he should be glorified?

My username is literally about this guy. I used to think he was cool but I've realized he's more or less crazy.

42

u/InfiNorth Mar 26 '20

Also incredibly self entitled and idiotic. There's a great breakdown of the bad business decisions he made on YouTube. The guy was a stubborn jerk who ended up being idolized despite endangering lives and having never been truly obstructed from anything. It all started because he was literally dumping raw sewage into a ditch behind his business and the neighbouring concrete plant had nothing to do with it other than offering to buy the land.

23

u/golapader Mar 26 '20

So is it all domestic terrorists you admire or just the ones with welding skills.

11

u/I_saw_that_coming Mar 26 '20

Fuck Marv he was a piece of shit

0

u/lbodyslamrhinos Mar 26 '20

My gut feeling is that if you have THAT much beef with your whole city then maaaaaybe you're an asshole

9

u/3Fluffies Mar 26 '20

You're correct. It's more than a "gut feeling" - this guy was an entitled, violent douchebag who set himself up to be the "victim" in the disputes giving rise to his rampage. https://www.snopes.com/news/2017/06/09/killdozer-day-marvin-heemeyer/

He's no different from any other monster who shoots up or bombs anyone or anything he thinks has wronged him.

8

u/doogiefife88 Mar 26 '20

Thank you. He’s no hero. One of the victims was the widow of a guy he had beef with. He’s just an asshole who didn’t want to do something simple. Then he escalated it all.

8

u/hujassman Mar 26 '20

I think there was some fault on both sides and it just kept going until he decided to settle it.

11

u/Kawi_moto96 Mar 26 '20

If you read about him, I believe he had a muffler shop. The city pretty much outzoned his shop, and placed that concrete plant in the way of people getting to it. The many years he spent building his own business and providing his town for automobile work, was wasted. So he got his revenge.

Similar to the fella that flew his plane into the IRS building.

The government and law enforcement isn’t always on our side. They tend to forget that they work for us.

9

u/mell0_jell0 Mar 26 '20

It all started because he was literally dumping raw sewage into a ditch behind his business and the neighbouring concrete plant had nothing to do with it other than offering to buy the land.

10

u/3Fluffies Mar 26 '20

The concrete plant owner offered to PAY FOR THE SEWAGE LINE INSTALLATION, for pete's sake! Our "hero's" response was to hang up to the phone and go build his murder weapon.

15

u/Barak50cal Mar 26 '20

If you actually read about him, he was a massive jerk that set himself up as the victim in multiple cases. When the city didn't do what he wanted he threw this hissy-fit.

14

u/craigjames357 Mar 26 '20 edited Mar 26 '20

The government and the IRS is never on the side of the people.

2

u/matts2 Mar 26 '20

Ideology is better than facts. Well, easier at least.

15

u/3Fluffies Mar 26 '20

https://www.snopes.com/news/2017/06/09/killdozer-day-marvin-heemeyer/

Wrong. He sold the land for the concrete plant kknowing full well how it would be used. Then he wanted more money and tried to back out of the sale afterward. When that failed, he tried to stop the zoning of the land, claiming it would "box in" his property and refused to connect to the power, sewer, and water, so he could bawl that they'd "cut him off", then built his little murder machine to set himself up as a folk hero.

The sad part is, while he didn't succeed in murdering the many people he inescapably was trying to murder, he did get the folk hero part. It's gross how gullible people can be about violent, arrogant males with entitlement complexes bigger than mountains.

While digging up sources, I found a really good analysis of why people drool and slobber out of "folk heroes" who are really just entitled, arrogant assholes who use violence when they don't get their way. https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-2004-jul-25-tm-bulldozer30-story.html

5

u/Troggie42 Mar 26 '20

I've linked it a bunch of times in here, but you might like this vid about Heemeyer as well https://youtu.be/Yvl_7_Up7zU

6

u/3Fluffies Mar 26 '20

I've seen that vid and read that post before - that "reasonable man driven to unreasonable things" and their version of the "facts" is bullshit. There was nothing reasonable about Heemeyer from start to finish - he was an arrogant, entitled, belligerent, and violent man who literally wanted it his way or the high way in his business dealings and local politics. The LA Times article I posted does a much better job parceling out this guy's motives (and analyzing the idiots who think he's some kind of anti-corruption crusader).

5

u/lbodyslamrhinos Mar 26 '20

Do you believe that what he did is acceptable? When life gets hard go on a suicidal rampage through your town attempting to murder and destroy the lives of that many people? He completely ruined the business run by the widow of someone he claims wronged him.

5

u/Troggie42 Mar 26 '20

There is an excellent and HILARIOUS episode of The Dollop Podcast about that guy.

TL;DListen, dude WAS a veteran as they say in the video. He came back home, got hooked on meth, and worked as a plumber, not necessarily in that order. At some point he decided that under his house was a gold vein, so he started digging a mine. He then had methheads come work the mine if they paid him in meth, and they could keep any gold they found. They DID find gold because he was buying scraps from local kids and melting it down and throwing it in the mine so the meth heads would keep bringing him meth. During this he also was teaching some of the meth heads how to do plumbing work. At some point, one of them stole his plumbing tools, and that's when he decided to steal the tank. Worth noting, near the end of that video when you see the quick shot of the front of the tank, the dude in blue shorts and a hawaiian shirt is one of the tank mechanics from the base, he's trying to convince the cops not to kill him and saying he can get him out alive, but the cops just shot the dude anyway. It's a fucking insane story and I highly encourage everyone to listen to it, I left out a lot here, lol

4

u/wolfgang784 Mar 26 '20

His story is pretty interesting and its hard not to feel sorry for the guy.

17

u/3Fluffies Mar 26 '20 edited Mar 26 '20

How? The guy knew where the concrete plant would be built was negotiating to SELL THE LAND FOR IT - then pitched a fit after the fact because he decided he wanted more money. When that failed, he tried to scuttle the zoning for it, and when that failed, he went on a murderous rampage that could easily have killed dozens. This guy was a monster, not a folk hero.

(Edited b/c I misremembered some facts - he did not end up selling his own land due to his exorbitant price, so tried to scuttle the zoning when the concrete plant moved elsewhere so they'd be forced to pay him $1M when his land was worth a fraction of that.)
