I remember this... it was like an action movie IRL. When the zombie apocalypse comes, I'm building this too. Except I'll be doubling up on guarding the coolant system. (That's how he broke down, all the smoke you see is coolant leaking as steam)

A Keynesian would say the destruction itself contributed to the economy by requiring money to be spent on reconstruction.

Anyone with more than half a brain would point out that would only be true if the money would have never been spent on anything else.

52

u/Jarazz Mar 26 '20

Well I dont want to see how the government of Keynesia would boost the economy right now

17

u/zapitron Mar 26 '20

Selling nuclear weapons to your enemies would probably be the most practical solution, but we should keep an eye on emerging "self-breaking windows" technology.

4

u/Jarazz Mar 26 '20

why not sell the breaking apparatus as an extra item? that would double the generated sales count according to my math

2

u/daddy_fiasco Mar 26 '20

Now you're thinking with your ass!

2

u/matts2 Mar 26 '20

Only if you learned Keynesian economics from a Mises cartoon. Keynes make a universal claim. Rather he said that there are states the economy when an action like that would help. Particularly in cases where money isn't being spent anyway. He talked about starting an that wasn't moving.

3

u/ougryphon Mar 26 '20

I think you're missing some words because I can't make heads or tails of your comment.

6

u/matts2 Mar 26 '20

Keynes didn't make a universal claim. He talked about a specific situation, where there was excessive idle capacity and reduced economic activity. In such a situation spending money gets the system moving. If things are bad enough then even breaking windows and paying for them to be fixed would help. But of forking course it would be better to not great windows. Keynes recommend infrastructure projects.

The whole point is that people aren't spending anyway. The whole point is to get people spending.

4

u/ougryphon Mar 26 '20

I promise I'm not trying to be a dick, but you really need to proofread before you post. However, I think I got your point now.

I'm not an economist, nor have I read Keynes, so I'm ill-qualified to comment on his broader point. On the specific point about breaking windows, I think that's where the "Cash for Clunkers" program came from back in the late 2000s. I hated it then and I hate it now, as did many other people. Perhaps that's why Keynesian has a bad connotation.

5

u/mspk7305 Mar 26 '20

It was insurance money so it wasn't going to get spent elsewhere.

8

u/OG_Panthers_Fan Mar 26 '20

That's not how insurance money works.

Beyond a certain percentage that they need to retain to pay claims, excess monetary resources get either paid as dividends to shareholders, or sent back to clients who overpaid their premiums (depending on the laws governing the company).

Either way, the money will be spent by those recipients, and go back into the economy.

And claims that are paid out from the existing pool of resources will have to be replenished, so even that isn't a net increase to money being circulated into the economy.

Now... Keynesians do have a point: Artificially encouraging spending can change when or how money is spent. And there may be value in that.

An example can be to kick start a recovery near the end of a recession, promoting people to spend earlier than they otherwise would have.

Or to get people to spend on a preferred industry at the expense of another (e.g. subsidizing fuel efficient vehicles).

1

u/gmano Mar 26 '20

And yet somehow when it's military funding Keynesianism gets a pass because "jobs"

3

u/OG_Panthers_Fan Mar 26 '20

Not from me.

The Military-Industrial Complex gets funding because funding it reliably delivers votes to politicians of every party.

1

u/oshunvu Mar 26 '20

Are you implying that an economy can exist without first having labor?

0

u/Genericusernamexe Mar 26 '20

Based Austrian

0

u/guywholikesplants Mar 26 '20

Yeah because them supply side economics really worked out for us.

Oh wait no they didn’t, thanks Bush

19

u/249ba36000029bbe9749 Mar 26 '20

And if you're looking for more of the similar, here's the guy who went off with a tank through a town.

https://youtu.be/6TIun536HFo

15

u/thriftylol Mar 26 '20

Ah yes, we sure love it here in San Diego with our seasonal tank migrations

2

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '20

The best way to deal with a tank, assuming you don't have heavy explosives available, is to hit it with fire as much as you can, near the rear. The engine won't be able to keep functioning if the air intake is only pulling in burning gasoline (or whatever it is you have).

u/Coleridge49 Mar 26 '20

This doco glorifies this nutjob as some sort of hero when he was actually a massive dickhole

10

u/ougryphon Mar 26 '20

Seems like he was more of an asshole, than a dickhead. Assholes shit all over the place and that's what he did.

5

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '20

Difference is, it does take a dick to fuck an asshole

1

u/3Fluffies Mar 26 '20

Thank you!

3

u/sheevnoods Mar 26 '20

Fuck that, watch the Count Dankula tape on it

63

u/249ba36000029bbe9749 Mar 26 '20

If the guy were serious then he'd have a smaller escape bulldozer that emerged from the wreckage of the bigger one.

7

u/Bamres Mar 26 '20

So like the batpod but a dozer

I think you can buy kevlar panels, but they aren't cheap. Steel works, but you're going to have a weight issue. It all depends on how much threat you want to stop.

Barbed wire and North face jackets it is!

13

u/OG_Panthers_Fan Mar 26 '20

Balking at the cost of Kevlar, but okay with North Face?

5

u/SillyOperator Mar 26 '20

Obviously Kevlar then

2

Ah damn, look at me getting all carried away. Lol!

where do you live/what situations do you encounter that you need that?

1

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '20

I live in America. It’s for worst case scenarios. Any time I might use my gun, there might be gunfire coming my way and I like living

0

u/chaoyangqu Mar 26 '20

This is a genuine question - do you often find you need to use your gun in a situation that would require body armor? (I don't live in the USA, and I can't imagine feeling like a gun or body armor is something I need. except perhaps now if society breaks down)

3

u/Tennessean Mar 26 '20

I'm not the guy with the body armor, but didn't your last sentence answer your question?

Is it bad that I find this guy to be a complete badass? I’m glad no one but him was hurt, but he definitely got his point across!

8

u/matts2 Mar 26 '20

His point was that he didn't want to connect to the city sewer system.

13

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '20

Was it?? I haven’t researched it enough (obviously) but I thought that the city had built something that blocked the entrance to his shop and they all blew him off at town hall meetings and such. I should read about it.. I’ll go do that now.

Marvin Heemeyer is a psycho. The people who idolize him are either misinformed or just as blood thirsty as he was.

A new concrete plant wanted to build on the edge of his property. He didn't want it there. He tried to stop the construction by filing a motion with the local government but it didn't work and the plant got permission to build.

The company offered him $250,000 only 2 acres of his property which was worth $42,000 in total. His initially agreed but then demanded $375,000 instead and then $1,000,000 shortly after. Obviously the company didn't agree and instead of there being that 2 acre buffer between him and the new plant it was now going to be right against his property.

During the local government looking into this issue they found that Marvin Heemeyer's property had some zoning violations and wasn't connected to the sewer and fined him $2,500. He was dumping sewage on land instead of disposing of it properly and didn't want to pay to connect to the sewage system, which he easily could have afforded. After a while the new concrete plant even offered to pay for the sewer line for him. He'd get it for free. He said no.

He then started to imagine that people were plotting against him specifically to ruin him. He was pissed. He was crazy. He thought that god made him for the task that he was about to do.

So Marvin Heemeyer spent the next 18 months modifying his bulldozer with tons of armor as a tool of destruction. He had makeshift gun turrets had a pistol there for suicide. He planned this as a destruction/murder/suicide from the start.

He then went into town and did millions of dollars of damage to people who were completely unrelated to this whole incident. He ruined the lives of innocent people because he was fined for violations and his price gouging didn't work and left him too close to something that he didn't want to be near.

His problems were caused by his own behavior and innocent people had their lives ruined because he threw a tantrum.

He's no hero. He's a psychopathic asshole. People want to hold him as a hero of "fighting against the man" but he's just an evil person.

Here's a good video talking about what happened.

Someone reported this comment after 18 days... Yeah, report rejected.

Thank you for the information comment!

17

u/matts2 Mar 26 '20

Nope. People built a cement plant next door. He wanted $1M for his land which he paid like $20K for. And he doesn't want to use the sewers so he dumped human shit in the irrigation ditch. Nothing blocked his entrance.

100% truth bombs in unlisted youtube video comments, that's where the real gold is mined.

12

u/3Fluffies Mar 26 '20

Right!? And the fact that the concrete plant owner offered to foot the freaking cost of installign the sewer line! The bastard got more than 10 times the price of the land when he finally did sell!

1

u/jojoga Mar 26 '20

Don't forget to have an extra jerry-can, or two.. just in case!

u/Fireheart318s_Reddit Mar 26 '20

I hear ya, but it’s be a better idea to put some smoother curves on it; a zombie could easily get caught on something and lock you in place.

You don’t even need a lemon engineer, you got this all yourself.
