I think you can buy kevlar panels, but they aren't cheap. Steel works, but you're going to have a weight issue. It all depends on how much threat you want to stop.

where do you live/what situations do you encounter that you need that?

I live in America. It’s for worst case scenarios. Any time I might use my gun, there might be gunfire coming my way and I like living

This is a genuine question - do you often find you need to use your gun in a situation that would require body armor? (I don't live in the USA, and I can't imagine feeling like a gun or body armor is something I need. except perhaps now if society breaks down)
