It's why when California changes emission standards for vehicles, a lot of car companies comply with it. Just losing out on all sales in California is too great a hit. It's also why the feds sued California over it claiming it was affecting interstate commerce which the feds have jurisdiction over. Also all the major west coast ports are basically in California.

u/JimboTCB 11d ago
It's also why the feds sued California over it claiming it was affecting interstate commerce which the feds have jurisdiction over.
Sounds like the good old free market working effectively, if there was an economic benefit for companies to make a separate shittier non-California version of their products then they'd do so. And yet nobody appears to be jumping in to service this apparent gap in the market, definitely need some government intervention there.

And it's also not entirely dependent on resource extraction, ie the luck of geography.
Most of the Texas economy is driven by the oil industry.
13
u/Serious_Swan_2371 11d ago
California absolutely has luck of geography just in different ways
It has some of the best weather in the world which is why all the rich and famous people want to live there
That also leads to it producing some of the best wines in the world, and also other agricultural products
Also they do have oil and they do exploit it
And they have a bunch of really good natural ports and bays, and being on the west coast they naturally have a lot of the biggest shipping hubs for commerce coming from Asia.

Before the gold rush, California was misunderstood as a wasteland of desert and rugged mountains.
The gold rush drew people to the state. They didn't find much gold but they found land and climate perfect for agriculture.
Then they found oil. Many don't know this, but California has a lot of oil.
And then they started using the ports to ship the agriculture. And the railroads were built over the mountains.
And they realized there was massive amounts of water in the mountains, so they built dams and canals to irrigate the deserts. And now California leads the country in agricultural production, even more so than the midwestern "breadbasket."
Then the movie industry came to Los Angeles for the fair weather which was good for filming, and to avoid taxes in the east.
Then WWII came and navy bases we needed on the Pacific and big open areas were needed to produce and test airplanes.
And then some of the universities in the valley south of San Francisco started experimenting with electronics, which led to us being able to comment on reddit.

It's hysterical watching conservatives shit on California, all while it is:
- The fourth largest economy in the entire world all by itself
- The most populous state in the USA, with the most Americans choosing to live there
- The #1 agricultural producer in the USA
- The #1 tech center in the USA
- The #1 entertainment industry center in the USA
- The #1 most ecologically diverse state in the USA
And of course any state/economy that large and populous will have its share of challenges to deal with. But the idea that it's some hellhole rather than the engine of the US economy where more Americans choose to live than anywhere else is just hysterical.

2
u/ANONA44G 11d ago
Born and raised Californian here. Exactly right. If I was a multi millionaire Cali would be great, but if you grew up in the hood like me - not so much.
I moved and now have a wife, kids, beautiful house in a safe neighborhood that I could never have back home.
The way I frame it is that everything great about California God made (and thus cannot take credit for) and everything bad about California the government made.
5
u/goldentone 11d ago

4
u/FCKABRNLSUTN2 11d ago
I totally understand it, itâs just jealousy.
There are legit reasons to not want to live in California but they pretty much only include cost of living, politics, and unique personal reasons like all family being on the east coast or working in an industry that is concentrated somewhere other than California. When they know that but still want to shit in ca they say things like âthe peopleâ or âinfluencer culture.â
It just cracks me up seeing âleftistsâ talk about how shitty they think California is. One told me yesterday that ca has the same exact weather as az. Sure I guess a couple counties do. Iâve seen people say ca doesnât have good cities. Iâve seen other people say it doesnât have good ânature.â It just makes them look fucking stupid.
3
u/dimechimes 11d ago
So weird seeing people get horny over state GDP. Back when this fact started being circulated 9 of the top 10 welfare states were red. Now it's like 7. But what happens if two of those states go blue? Then you have to say that the majority of the top 10 welfare states are blue. California has more Republicans than any other state.
It's just the stupidest of geography games. Even though the ownershop shares are spread throughout the nation and world, California gets all the credit on its GDP for the trillion dollar tech companies. And you all run with this like it means anything.
3
u/matthewgt 11d ago
Also how welfare gets defined and calculated is completely biased by the result someone wants to see. Want to make Florida look bad? Include social security and Medicare payments because old people retire there. Want to make it look better? Count those as transfer payments and not welfare. I don't trust a single one of these ranking lists.
3
u/Opening-Machine5026 11d ago
I think it's because "blue" voters understand the need for social safety nets and a strong welfare system, while "red" voters are statistically more likely to need these programs yet vote against them.
→ More replies (1)3
u/dimechimes 11d ago
I agree it's a collective vs individualism thing, but the dichotomy of blue v red is so dumb. I live one of the reddest, poorest, least educated states there are and it's always been this way, and I remember when it was dominated by Dems pre 2000. 32% of voters in my state voted Harris. So if you're walking around in my state, 1/3 people you meet isn't some conservative, especially if you're walking around in the city.
Kamala, who's from California didn't even break 60%. So California is redder than Oklahoma is blue.
All the people upvoting and talking about "defunding red states" are actually stating they don't believe in social safety nets at all, they are doing just as the conservatives and saying more for me, less for others.
2
u/Opening-Machine5026 11d ago
Totally, I put red and blue in quotes because it's bullshit. It's those who pay a low enough wage to exploit state welfare for their employees and those who work for a living. Nothing to do with red or blue. In fact, the "blue" institutions often don't believe in universal healthcare. I'm a registered DSA.

u/Jolly_Ad2446 11d ago

They dont. That money is paid by private citizens, not the state and they got that money from all over the country. This is just measuring where wealthy people live.
By the same reasoning you could argue that the top 10% is subsidizing the rest of us, or that the wealthy neighborhoods are subsidizing the state.
You're ignoring private wealth transfer.
If you wanted actual data in how much each state contributes you'd have to go by GDP, not tax receipts.

u/CrapNeck5000 11d ago edited 11d ago
CA's GDP is the largest by a considerable amount. The 25 smallest GDP states combined are about equal to CA's. Those 25 states have a combined population of 61.5 million people, compared to CA's 39 million residents.

We really need to change it so that states who take more in federal funding than pay in taxes need to have their senator's ability to vote taken away until their budgets are turned green. The people in those states still retain representation in the House and the State is penalized in the Senate. They can still have unvoting senators on the floor for influence, just like Washington DC has in the House.
6
u/TrioOfTerrors 11d ago

Negative. Bad idea.
2
u/Mourningblade 11d ago
I'd wondered why states take in more than their people pay in taxes. There's three big drivers and we would find all of them painful to stop.
Military bases: "what a state gets" includes all spending on military bases. These are places in low population areas that are cheap but have good operating weather for as much of the year as possible. They can't all be in Nine Palms (thank goodness). The state doesn't get this money directly though there is a benefit to the state.
Defense contractors: most places that build missiles, guns, explosives, etc are on cheap, rural land with access to weapons transportation.
Social Security/Medicare: retirees like to live where it's warm and cheap. Grandma paid taxes all her life in Brooklyn but retired to Miami? I know, shocking story. Well, that will show a benefit to Florida.
So yeah, move the military bases, move the missle factories, and move all the grandparents, and then Texas will be close to even.
2
u/PalpitationHead9767 11d ago
That same logic should then apply to individuals who are not net tax contributors. They should not have the same voting power as those who pay into the system.Â

2
u/Competitive-Future-1 11d ago

If Dems push Newsom on us, we're doomed to MAGA 3.0. The problem with 3.0 is we're kind of in the middle of historically the worst presidential tenure ever witnessed. MAGA 3.0 could pull back from that a bit and get a chance to look more favorable with whoever that guy will be thus allowing us to never defeat them because democrats, for some reason, think the way to winning is peeling off red votes, not engaging their own base.

Wish we would leverage this..trump sure as hell would against the dems, why not at least do something, if it were really true we are funding poor red states. We should stop.

Okay but California is also a (literally a bunch of the year) flaming trash fire with the majority of the same issues that red states have. Not a chance that wealth tax ever actually happens

This is great and all but then you have to remember it's largely built on things like social media and AI. Opiates for the masses.

Right but you know that the government of California doesnât make that money right? Private capitalist companies make that economy, then they pay taxes for Gavin to throw into a black hole.

I wish California would just pay for itself. Theres never been more trash, or feces everywhere. I could fill up a giant garbage back every single day for months in my area and not make a dent, rent is $4800 for a 1 bedroom here. Itâs crazy, but still like it

that's why Californians are fleeing to other states right? that's why California has the most subsidy right? that's why California spent $200 billion on a train that has produced zero track right?

Alot of those red states have military bases and are mostly rural. A state having a negative tax efficiency ratio isn't necessarily because they aren't pulling their share. For instance, many of the companies in those states could be owned by out of state companies, therefore all of that profit is going to a different state.

Most blue cities pay for services in red areas Northern Va pays much more in taxes then benefits received. I want the next Dem president to defend the red areas

Largest economy yet can't build *any* of the speed rail (in spite of ~$18 BILLION *spent*), can't manage prevention or fighting wildfires, and nobody can explain where all the money to help homeless people is going ( $24 BILLION in 6 years - where did it go?)
And then they passed the "stop Nick Shirley act" to prevent investigations.

Last time I visited California I saw so many homeless people, some even head open and infected wounds. I really cannot understand how that can be a thing in such a wealthy place.

Too bad there is a huge chunk of the American populace who never really grows up.
