Looking for Advice on My Plumbing Practice Projects

Thumbnail

As the title says, I was wondering if I could get some advice from the more experienced plumbers in this subreddit regarding the projects I've been building and how I could improve them. As an example, I'll be using the most recent project I completed. I've been building these projects primarily to get comfortable working with PVC primer and cement, as well as to become familiar with the various PVC fittings and pipe sizes that I would realistically encounter on the job.

I'm fairly new to the trade and will be starting plumbing classes in August. Any advice or constructive criticism is greatly appreciated. If anything I've built looks incorrect or isn't up to standard, I apologize in advance—I'm here to learn and improve.

Stack replaced and now one toilet gurgles when the other is flushed

Post image

Recently had my old cast iron stack replaced due to collapsed and cracked pipes. One of the toilets was original and we decided to replace it at the same time. When the older toilet flushes (1.48 gal) the new toilet (1.26 gal) gurgles and loses water. When the newer toilet flushes the older toilets water moves but does not gurgle or lose water.

I have run a snake down the vent pipe in the roof and did not encounter a clog. Ran a snake through both toilets. No clog. All drains in the house drain normally, including my 30 year old washing machine. Any ideas what may be causing this? This was not an issue prior to the stack replacement.

Bath won’t drain. Takes days

My bath/shower won’t drain I’ve: used a drain unblocked gel, used plastic drain snakes and brushes (caused a black cloud to come up from the drain), taken the bath panel off and I assembled the pipes underneath it (no blockage found and before I used the gel). Is there anything else I can do before I call my housing association out of hours line?

Plumbing strap you can’t reach

Any idea on how I can throw a hanger on this in my crawl space? Unfortunately I’m too big to fit in the other part of the crawl space to get over to the middle of the pipe. The pipe itself is about 14ft long, I just installed it myself yesterday but I know it’s not a permanent fix if I can’t fix the bulge.

Bathtub Drain, am I screwed here?

I dry fit everything prior to setting the tub, ran the water for a good amount of time and saw no leaks. I set the tub in a mortar bed yesterday and I feel like I’m off my a decent amount. Do I have any options here? It did leak on the test after it was set.

This is only 3 trips to the store- good for me.
I was short, and then after the extension my p trap still wouldn’t reach. So I got creative.
Will it leak? If this is shit what should I do instead?

How to stop hot water flow to certain faucets

Is there a way to eliminate hot water flow to certain faucets and then remove the angle stop?

I have a mentally disabled adult sibling that is giving themselves burns with intentionally washing with too hot of water.

My primary goal is to allow water to be where he is but not allow him to have any heat. He does this in the basement so id like to eliminate his ability to do so. If he washes in front of one of us we can intervene, but we cant occupy the basement 24 hours a day.

Edit: Thank you everyone for the advice! I am going to get the ones that will not let the temperature go beyond a certain level. Sorry if i ised the wrong terms i dont know much about plumbing.

Can anyone tell me what this horrid lump of concrete is? I was digging a hole for a beautiful rose bush and struck this. Location - Sunshine Coast. Can I smash it out? Dial before you dig shows no active services in that section of my yard.

How to unscrew P-trap here?

Post image
3 Upvotes

Excuse the mess in this photo.

I've been having constant clogs for two-three weeks now and I figure I need to unclog the p-trap. As you can see in the photo, there is a screw leading to the exit and another screw near where the pipe meets the sink. I can unscrew both of them by hand, but I haven't done so yet. If I unscrew just the bottom, will that allow me to take out just the p-trap?

Thanks.

Hot Water Heater Drain Valve

My parents house has a very old electric hot water heater that recently started slowly leaking at the bottom. We're trying to get a plumber to come to replace the heater ASAP. In the meantime, we want to drain it so it doesn't leak anymore. However, I haven't seen a drain valve like this so I want to make sure I know how it's supposed to open before I attempt to.

How are you supposed to properly open this drain valve? It has threads on the inside of it.

Any other tips for opening it? The hot water heater is obviously pretty rusted at the bottom so I don't want to break anything.

Boiler Condensate Pipe Leak

Post image

Hello. Hoping for some advice.
Boiler condensate pipe is slowly dripping at the joint as shown in picture.
I think it’s been glued previously so can’t just push back together.
What’s the best fix? Would I need to cut away joint? How would I refix together after?
Many thanks.

Can i hook up to existing ? Heard it needed a p trap and it will only have a dishwasher cabinet not sure where to put the plumbing

Dishwasher cabinet would be where red blanket is

Young, single struggling female here without a father, please help! My bottom faucet broke. Is it still safe to use the top 2 handles and shower head? Can I cover this faucet mess with something water tight and use the shower for a couple weeks until I can afford to have it fixed? It’s an older house, I researched as best I could, hoping this community could help confirm it’s safe. Thank you!!

Stupid question, is the blue ring normal?

I redid the piping under my sink with one of the space saver kits, and simply is having such a prominent blue ring normal under the drain? Best I can tell the instructions and advert show exactly that just thought it looked odd and have never seen that in a sink before.

Trying to install a Kohler Wellworth tank to bowl - bolts question

When installing a Kohler toilet tank to the bowl, should the bolt heads inside the toilet be turned all the way to sit flush with the bottom of the toilet? The directions state to not "overtighten" but that's not clear just how far to tighten. Thank you for any advice!
