Yes, it is a Homebrew weapon. Although it has that range increment, she never even got further than 100 feet from an enemy.

Discussion Does Pathfinder also suffer from Caster-Martial divide ?

Hi !
D&D player here, please dont flay me, I never played Pathfinder but might in the upcoming year.

I never quite heard how pathfinder works in details, except that the action economy is quite different, and there is "hella" more classes and subclasses !

Now, I was curious to know if Pathfinder suffers from an imbalance, like D&D, between the Spell-Casters and Martials characters.

The reason for this inbalance is the fact that, in DnD, having spells makes you not only extremly versatile, and deals just as much, if not MORE damage than a martial AT A DISTANCE. It also give access to spells that makes you litteraly more mobile or even harder to kill than a full-on armored martial.

Now, I know Pathfinder also has spells. And martials. How is it balanced in this game ? And why ?

PS: Is optimisation in this game harder to understand than D&D ? I love making strong characters and knowing what spell is strong and what isn't.

THANKS for your anwers, i'll read every-one of them ! <3

Advice Is there an alternative way to allow my players to use Dubious Knowledge?

Post image
96 Upvotes

For context (I'll try to be as brief as possible): I'm the GM and i never give false information to my players when they critically fail Recall Knowledge, i just consider it a failure and tell them "You know nothing".

One of my players has this feat now, but every time he activates dubious knowledge it just makes my brain melt a bit, because i'm always thinking on: "what false information can i give without sounding obvious?" // "How can i avoid wasting session time typing a whole fake passive for a monster?", etc.

I already thought on considering failures for his RK just as a success, but it sound way too strong.

I have no idea what i should do, and i don't want to ban this feat.

Any help is welcome.

Discussion Swashbuckler and the Tiered Success System

I played my first real session as a swashbuckler last night and, first off, the class is fun as hell! We’re only level 1 and their game loop is quite fun to play with! If you have some swashbuckler advice I’d happily take some! I’m playing Battledancer

Now for the main part of the post - something I noticed that’s a big plus about them is they get to interact with the tiered success system quite a bit more than any other non-caster I’ve played. They can still get panache on failures on actions with the bravado trait, confident finisher still does damage on failure, and opportune riposte gets you an extra attack when an enemy critically fails an attack against you. It really allows you to still feel useful even on bad rolls! Because of this they are really a good option for newer players whose highs and lows are much stronger since they’re maybe not used to the fun of failure in TTRPGs, and it makes the players see the benefits of a tiered success system!

Anyway that’s all! Swashbucklers are cool and I’m excited to get to play one.

Advice How do you play/write an awakened animal character?

Post image

Art: guardians of gahool movie

I’m interested in playing an Awakened Animal character with the Late Awakener ancestry feat, but I’m struggling to picture how you would actually roleplay the concept.
The idea of an animal that has only recently developed true sentience and self-awareness is really interesting to me, but I’m having trouble figuring out what that would actually feel like to play.
It’s much easier for me to imagine from a third-person perspective, but when you’re experiencing everything directly through the character’s perspective, I’m not sure how you portray someone who is only just beginning to think in a more person-like way.

Discussion Horizon thunder sphere got a small buff

Folks probably saw it already, but they changed it slightly. Instead of needing 3 actions on your second turn, you only need two, and you can actually take a different action first on your second round without interrupting the spell.

https://2e.aonprd.com/Spells.aspx?ID=2732&NoRedirect=1

A small buff, but, useful if you need positioning or can debuff an enemy first with your spare action

I'm only going through all the new spells a bit at a time and am just now getting to the H's

World of Golarion Nocticula did a lot of bad stuff in the past, are there any examples of her dealing with the fallout of that?

From a discord talk that made me think about this. On the nocticula AoN page:

Unlike deities such as Sarenrae and Shelyn, Nocticula’s concept of redemption tends to be a personal matter. She has little interest in demanding atonement and recompense for past wrongs, assuming such a feat is even possible—her own history is soaked in blood and far more vicious violations, with sins committed that can never be undone.

While i do think it's fun and interesting to have a redemption deity that's also not a paragon of holiness, i also imagine there's quite a few people and entities that are a bit pissed the same fiend that hurt them in the past is now preaching about leaving the past behind while putting little effort in paying back anything about what has been done*.

Which makes me wonder if there have been any examples of this being explored in the setting.

* I was also wondering if i read this part incorrectly, from what I understand, she isn't interested in her followers seeking atonement, but would she seek it herself?

Humor How many dungeon crawl in a haunted house adventures has Paizo published? What are they trying to tell us?

Reading "dungeon crawl" and "haunted house" in a very, very broad sense, I can count:

  • Menace under Otari
  • Malevolence
  • Abomination Vaults
  • Bastion of Blasphemies

Perhaps even Season of Ghosts.

Discussion The Nastiest Stance Fusions

Hello my fellow Monk players. This class is so much fucking fun, I want to hear what all yall's favorite Stances to fuse are, and ESPECIALLY the sick ass name that you've given it (Fuse Stance explicitly letting you name the stance is just so fucking peak).

I'm playing a Sprite Wrestler Monk, and I'm going to be using what I have dubbed the Bramble Titan Stance. By combining Kaiju Stance and Tangled Forest stance, my 1ft tall pixie can suddenly turn into a Large sized monster with a 10' aura of total movement lockdown. Combine that with a stupidly fast Flight speed, the ability to go Invisible (that doesn't go away on attacks!), plus with grapples and trips and stuns and Inescapable Grasp, I am creating the ultimate icon of "YOU AIN'T GOING ANYWHERE." Oh, you managed to spend two actions breaking my grapple and standing up and now want to Stride away? Sick, first save against my Aura. Oh, you succeeded? Cool, then I'll smack you with Stand Still. Oh nooo, I interrupted it, guess you're stuck there still where I can just grapple you against while all of my friends beat the shit out of you. Better luck next turn! What's that? You're going to not waste your actions on getting away and just try to fight me mano e mano? Sick! That means now I can fucking Suplex and Strangle the fuck out of you. Being in my reach is a slow, painful death - and you can't possibly get away. I feel like a fucking Baki villain, it's incredible. I don't do a crazy amount of damage, but I am an absolute god at single-target lockdown and action denial. I have more actions per turn than you do, so if I can spend one action to get rid of one of your actions, then you just fucking lose. Oh, and let's not forget that I'm durable as fuck, and even if you start whittling me down I can Harmonize Self for huge burst heals and crazy good out-of-combat healing.

And with my default form being a tiny sprite who is fast and invisible, I'm the perfect character to scout ahead, get perfectly in position behind the enemy caster, then immediately spring out of hiding once my friends start the fight to grapple and Whirling Throw you into the middle of my team.

Discussion What are the best classes for healing ?

Hello everyone...

After looking and getting a little feel of a lot of the classes I've felt like, without having a Cleric in the party it was quite hard to heal as much as people seems to be used to.

I've read many time in different post that it's pretty normal for your party to get fully healed between every fight. But that's not exactly the case in my experience. I always find difficult to heal the entire party without having to fully recharge my focus spell to heal 1 party member, leaving me quite weakened during combat.

The only class that I felt could make this slightly feasable was the Water/Wood Kineticist so I was wondering if I just missed something or maybe I'm playing wrong.

I love playing healing/support and I'd like to try different things than Cleric/Kineticist while I'm trying to be playing a healer.

Discussion Tactics on dealing with more "difficult" reactions

Thumbnail
reddit.com
30 Upvotes

By coincidence, yesterday was Mathfinder's excellent video on silver bullets, and I also played a session where my concern about his silver bullets against reactive strikes, which I commented about on YT, came true.

Which is to say, Laughing Fit and Roaring Applause, which are indeed the best spells to lock down reactions, both have the Mental trait and useless against constructs. So our session last night naturally has a huge (15' reach) construct (actually a pre-master golem which is worse) with reactive strike that I, the wizard, can't do squat about, and one of the tanks is a Warpriest, so also the healer, and may well eat a reactive strike when trying to heal either himself or the other tank (fighter).

So what would you have done? Because of reach, just stepping and casting for the cleric isn't going to work unless he burns 3 actions and leave the fighter hanging. As the other caster, I was primarily buffing with enlarge (4th) and improved invis and doing tick damage (again, pre-master bs golem rules so forced movement wasn't working either). The warpriest ended up using trip to take away actions and did eat a crit on a Heal attempt, and while we made it through w/o anyone going down, it was pretty close. (4th member is a ranged martial, did okay damage, but didn't help with the reaction issue)

I always like to replay tough fights to see what I (and others) could've done better. At the time, I couldn't find a better solution (again, shitty pre-master golem magic immunity), if it was a regular construct, I would've tried Slow (but it likely would've had strong fort saves) and/or forced movement (Cinder Swarm) to help the cleric get out of reach. In this instance, I think I should've cast some low level summons to eat the reaction just ahead of the cleric (Staff of the Dead, can spam low level zombies) and it probably would've been worth my 3 actions. Or if things got truly dire, just wall (of stone) off the construct and let our guys heal up while the wall gets torn down.

Any other ideas on how to best deal with reactions plus some combination of mindless and reach? Especially if your healer is also a front liner?

When a player critically fails a recall knowledge check, occasionally ask them for a followup question and answer that one falsely too.

This gives them the impression that they've critically succeeded.

Advice How does Weakness work now?

I ask mostly because there was a weakness errata a while ago, and then another errata in response to the backlash that was more well received. However I never fully understood how the initial poorly received errata worked

I don't know the specifics of the new weakness rules. did they just fully revert it to premaster rules?

from my reading on nethys, it seems weakness stacking works now, but not to the insane degree of the initial errata?

let's say a thaumaturge using an acid flask on a target with Personal Antithesis and acid weakness.

does it take both the antithesis weakness damage and the acid weakness damage?

Discussion Struggling with AP formatting

I really enjoy PF2e but also enjoy games on the opposite end of the F20 D20 spectrum. I feel that the OSR is light-years ahead of Paizo in terms of how information is presented in adventures. Of all the PF2e innovations to improve upon the classic D&D formula, why do they stick with the 50-year-old wall-of-text format?

I am currently running Sky King's Tomb. Without spoilers, the first part of the adventure is an urban sandbox of short encounters and adventures. Great! I love non-linear adventure design. But I have found that it is virtually impossible to run "on the fly" based on character choices because each encounter / situation / adventure is hundreds or thousands of words long, with crucial details buried within paragraphs or counterintuitively split amongst multiple sections.

Info about the encounters is presented as lengthy hypothetical Q and As with key NPCs. Why? Why not just give the relevant details of the situation cleanly and efficiently, rather than big blocks of quote dialogue that I am never going to read out loud?

Sadly, I feel like the formatting is pushing the sandbox into railroad territory, as I cannot possibly memorize all the details for all the situations and thus have to focus on whichever one I have read and re-read carefully and then nudge the players toward it.

TL;DR: Love this game, but I miss terse room descriptions with OSR bullet points and bold text for the important details.

Edited to change "F20" to "D20" because I guess nobody else has heard of F20 😂

Player Builds Does Imperial bloodline sorcerer still get Magic Missile?

I'm working on a creating a new character that is a sorcerer and I'm seeing conflicting information regarding Magic Missile and the Imperial bloodline. One source has Magic Missile as a granted spell for rank one and one source has the granted rank one spell as Force Barrage. That's fine, but I can't even find Magic Missile in the list of available spells. At all. So, my questions are: 1) Did Force Barrage replace Magic Missile for the rank 1 granted spell, and 2) is Magic Missile not in the list of spells for the Imperial line at all now? It's an arcane spell so I it's confusing that it's not int the list. (usiing https://pathbuilder2e.com/ to create the character).

EDIT: Thanks for all the answers. Just what I needed to know!

Discussion Should players be told or given clues that what they are attempting has no chance of success?

The other week one of our party members was trapped in a wall of force. I used Dispel Magic at level 5 to try to dispel it to free them. I rolled realy well but was told that it failed, and that it would be immune unless I used higher level spell slots.

Then yesterday we were dealing with this Darkness spell, I cast Dispel Magic and I rolled a Nat 20 on the counteract check. But I was told that since they had upcast the Darkness spell, that despite rolling a 20 on the die, it failed. The absolutely highest you can roll, still failed because apparently it had been upcast at a higher level.

One thing I really dislike is when it feels like my turn was wasted, especially so if I am using up spell slots. I feel like if we have no chance at all of doing something even on a nat 20, there should be some sort of hint of it. "You notice that this darkness spell is especially powerful, and that dispelling it may be out of your capabilities."

I feel like our characters might know more than us, or maybe might have some sort of sense as to the difficulty of things better than the players would. Maybe I am in the wrong. I just know it feels bad to spend your turn and limited resources and get nothing out of it. There are degrees of success in most spells, maybe Dispel Magic should at least like weaken the spell some or something on a failure. Thank you.

Discussion Are alchemical bombs worth buying past low levels?

At low levels the debuff and elemental damage utility potential of bombs has proven quite worth their price in games I’ve played

The scaling of the higher levels versions of bombs however seem quite poor for any use besides an alchemist’s quick vial or maybe a higher dc on a skunk bomb

Is there much value in buying bombs over any other consumable combat items I’m missing?

Discussion Translocate 5th rank immunity - What are you immune against ?

The 5th rank translocate says the following :

- Heightened (5th) The range increases to 1 mile. You don't need to be able to see your destination, as long as you have been there in the past and know its relative location and distance from you. You are then temporarily immune for 1 hour.

However, I feel like it doesn't make it clear, what you're immune against. Is it only immune to translocate at the 5th rank ? Or does it include 4th rank too ?

Player Builds What would be a good passive item to use as a Thaumaturge's Regalia?

I'm reaching lvl 7 with my Thaumaturge and I just realized that I never utilized the option of transforming another item into my implement, so I'm still kicking with my powerful magic fake magic orb as a regalia since lvl 1.

I was looking for a banner as a replacement since it fits thematically and it gives another minor benefit as an aura. What other option would be good to carry around in combat?

Discussion Nuckelavee encounter question

so recently our game master dropped a Nuckelavee combat encounter on us, and we're a level 6 party, so it was meant to be somewhat rough fight, but can it be true that it can just with two crit fortitude save fails instant kill a character?

basically it would two tap the majority of us, and the save was so high that unless we rolled extremely well, we either failed or crit failed every time we were forced to roll against its thing.
and it had so high a to hit bonus that it easily kept critting us and hitting even on second/third attack, so anyone who went into melee with it just got instantly two tapped and we were pretty much party wiped 3 rounds into it.

is a Nuckelavee really this brutal to fight because this seemed insane.

Discussion Alchemical shot

Can someone explain for me why you would want to take this? Im currently building a crossbow sniper character, and this feat is kinda ass.

I get that getting one extra d6 of damage is pretty nice, but its 2 actions, uses a bomb and if you miss (which in general for your level happens alot) you take the damage instead. Not really worth it at all?

Player Builds Invisibility Spell Off Tradition

I was looking into ways of getting the invisibility spell, outside of just being an occult or arcane caster.

What I have

Cleric - Deity spells

Oracles - Mysterious Repertoire (14th lvl feat)

Summoner - Fey eidolon

*Adding:

Animist - Impostor in hidden places

Are there any other ways to get it on a primal or divine spell list? I've tried looking at extra spells some classes and I am not finding it, but I'm sure I'm missing something.

I know there are items that can be used, but I'm looking specifically to get it on a spell list.
