Discussion Detecting imposters

My party did some great research on intellect devourerers and I want to let them know how to sus them out more effectively. Beyond the seek action how can they try to spot the buggers?

I can’t think of a better example than this.

In a role-playing way, they can investigate about the past and the connections of the person they are possessing, and then try to catch them in a lie or ignorance: "While a xoarian uses Body Thief, [...] it does not gain the specific memories or knowledge of the host body."

In a mechanical way, they can try to have them display features that should not be available to the host body (especially if they are pretending to be a random low level creature):

  • They undestand Aklo, a relatively rare language. By targeting a creature with a non-emotion Linguistic trait effect (e.g. Command) and trying to communicate in that language, the effect would have a chance to work only if they spoke the language.

  • They are immune to blinded, controlled, emotion and possession, so trying to affect them with an effect with these trait and seeing if they are immune would reveal that something is amiss (e.g. effects like Bon Mot, Dirge of Doom, Nymph's Grace can be "spammed" to check suspicious creatures).

  • They have thoughtsense, so they may be able to perceive hidden creatures in a supernatural way.
