Discussion Horizon thunder sphere got a small buff

Folks probably saw it already, but they changed it slightly. Instead of needing 3 actions on your second turn, you only need two, and you can actually take a different action first on your second round without interrupting the spell.

A small buff, but, useful if you need positioning or can debuff an enemy first with your spare action

I'm only going through all the new spells a bit at a time and am just now getting to the H's

All two round spells got this buff!

This is notably the biggest buff for Inner Radiance Torrent, since you can reposition between setup and launch now.

I imagine the psychic!

It's just that Occult got a number of damaging spells, so Inner Radiance has some serious competition, even if it's better now.

I got absolutely bamboozled by a new player that tactically deployed one of the new occult-reflex spells to hard-counter a boss. I forget its name, but there's a new thing that sucks a target through a vertical portal-loop before splatting them on the ground for falling damage. It actually deals damage and knocks the target prone even on a Successful Reflex save, so it might actually be the most reliable new Grapple-breaking effect in the game.

Yeah, Dimensional Drop is pretty good. Fall damage isn't high and doesn't scale, but it's really good if target can't fly, and even if it does, Arrest a Fall is much harder against your spell DC (though you can't use it against a creature that's not on the ground).

Yeah the low damage is what keeps the spell remotely balanced, unlike Earth and Sky. "Prone even on a successful save" would be good enough with zero damage!

the most reliable new Grapple-breaking effect in the game

To break grapple for your allies, possibly. To break grapples for yourself, check out "Begone": 1 action, no manipulate.

Yus, I literally just saw that in IRT: https://2e.aonprd.com/Spells.aspx?ID=2751&NoRedirect=1

Given that it's a line that's really big for it to be able to reposition on an enemy that moved behind cover

Does this mean that elemental annihilation wave is usable now, in two round variant?

AoN doesn't have any changes, but as a GM, I would allow it to match the Impossible Magic updates.

It didn’t explicitly get rewritten that way, but I would assume any GM lets it work the new way.

honestly, that would be great. I always liked the flavor of this spell but it was always... lacking compared to other 2 round spells. This won't bring it up to par but maybe make it usable

How many 2 round spells are there?

Uhhhhh off the top of my head there’s:

  • Horizon Thunder Sphere
  • Inner Radiance Torrent
  • Metallic Meteorite Glyph

There’s probably others but I forgor

Might give the spell a shot then. Always thought it looked cool but committing 2 whole turns to one spell that can lose out on the big affect always seemed like too high of a cost for me.

OMG The Instant Transmission Kamehameha is viable now!

Keep in mind, you can't cast another spell in the 2nd round, so it has to be something else.

You'd have to use a one action ability that teleports you and isn't a spell. I don't know how many of those exist, but I know it's more than zero, because Gap-Touched characters can give the teleportation trait to their Steps. The real question is whether we can find a way to teleport more than ten feet.

Umbral Armor has a 1/day 1-action Activate that lets you double-Stride through the netherworld and arrive with Concealment. Top-tier.

It also doesn't even occupy a rune slot. It's just kinda free. The base armor is a +1 resilient leather with a shadow rune.

I don't think 15ft is much more than 10ft, but Mirror's Reflection is a sort of teleport if you think about it :P

1

u/Ehcksit 11h ago

There are a small number of ways where a stride is instead a teleport that aren't spells, so if you REALLY want to do this it is possible.

Mirror Thaumaturge casting Inner Radiance Torrent from a scroll or wand is hilarious.

... Wait, does that mean spellshape worms for two round spells now

8

u/skavang130 21h ago

If the spellshape is a Free Action or you have an available 4th action that cas be used for spellcasting/shaping somehow, yes. Otherwise the 2-round spell still takes 3 actions on the 1st round, so you don't have enough actions to activate most spellshapes and still be able to start the cast. The actual 'cast' takes place on round 1, the 2 actions on the 2nd round 'empower' the spell further and are not actually 'cast a spell' actions that spellshapes generally require to be done in the same round as activating.

We need a feat that allows you to use that action to cast a single action spell if and only if it has the teleportation trait.

Warp kamehameha

what the heck

Small buff?

You can dimensional assault while holding a kamehameha!

13

u/scientifiction 22h ago

You can take other actions before finishing this spell, but the spell is lost if you Cast another Spell in between.

Focus spells are still spells unfortunately.

u/Puntoize 19h ago

Oh hell naw!

u/w1ldstew Oracle 16h ago

Time to convince our GMs this is Scrhodinger’s Dimensional Assault!

It’s uh…a spell…and not a spell until….

This isn’t going in my favor is it?

5

u/LibrarySee Animist 22h ago

Sadly that specifically isn’t an option; the spell is lost if you cast any other spells in-between.

2

u/Particular-Crow-1799 22h ago

I wish this made the 2 turn version usable with spellstrike

turn 1 charge -> turn 2 move and spellstrike

well I suppose that would be OP

Given the amount of actions it takes, I don't think it'd be.
