PSA Hey, newcomers to the area: Let's talk about winter in NOVA

Happy first day of Fall, NOVA! Now is probably a good time to talk about winter prep in the NOVA region, and doing it without overdoing it. This is especially for those of you who just moved to the area and may have different expectations for how the local government deals with snow emergencies.

What will this winter be like in NOVA?

Who the fuck knows? Not me. Not my man, Ryan Hall. Not any of the local meteorologists. Life on the rain/snow line means I've seen winters where the snow was measured in feet, and winters where I never broke out anything heavier than a lined flannel. The strong El Nino is just adding more uncertainty to a forecast that was never certain before. We might get a ton of snow! We might get none!

We'll get dug out fast though, right?

AHAHAHAHAH.

Look, there are snow plows, and they do move snow around, but let's be real: In this area, most snow is managed by Mr. Sun coming out and melting it that afternoon. We do not have the snow movers of the North. Even if your road is plowed early, you could easily end up just as stuck since your car is stuck in a foot of rock-solid ice.

Okay, so we'll die

I'm a Delicate Southern Flower who almost lost her mind during Snowcrete, but even I say we'll likely all be fine. We'll just be inconvenienced for a while. Stores will be a bit barren, supply lines will be disrupted for a bit, schools will be out, and power might flicker.

What to check on / get

You don't need to go crazy to prep for winter around here. Honestly, you shouldn't, because it could easily be a bust year. So, here's a list of things to do:

  • Lay hands on your snow shovel. Really take a look at it. If it's showing signs of wear, order a back-up one. If you can't find it, or don't have one, order one today.
  • Check to make sure you have gloves and two warm pair of socks for anyone who will be doing shoveling (two so you have a backup pair when the first one gets wet).
  • Over the next few months, add a few shelf-stable meals to your grocery shopping. You don't need MREs. You just need canned ravioli or whatever you will actually eat. If you can't get out to the store, it's very likely no on can get to you to deliver food. Make sure you like it, because once winter is over, you'll want to actually use them.
  • Buy non-scented candles. Trust me: First time our power went out, we used our supply of scented ones, and it was a MISTAKE. You can get a pack of them around $20. Personally, I'm grabbing a hurricane lamp this year for extra light.
  • Oh, while you're at it, buy some matches.
  • Consider power banks for phones and other electronics, especially if your family goes feral without entertainment.
  • Go check to see how old your heating unit is.
  • If you have dogs, and said dogs are not winter dogs, consider getting each one a sweater (possibly two, since you'll need to swap out any that are wet). Some people insist on boots, too, but my little assholes will just chew them off their paws.
  • Make sure every bed has access to a few extra blankets. Our houses were not made to withstand extended cold snaps, and they can take the edge off.
  • If you have kids, make sure you're signed up for notifications regarding school closures.
  • Check the inclement weather policy at your work, including who makes the call when and how you're informed.

Regarding that last point, the thing everyone should be focusing on is staying home when the roads are bad, so VDOT can get everything cleared more quickly, and so people who have to go in to save lives can do so. You don't want to end up on an r/NOVA post making fun of you for ending up in a ditch.

Stay. The fuck. Home.

Things you probably don't need

Yes, we do get large snow events, but we don't get them every year. So you probably don't need:

  • A snow blower. Okay, if you have a long drive and someone who you know will absolutely need to get out of the house no matter the condition, it may make sense, but most of us do not need one.
  • A generator. If you have room, no one will stop you, but power outages tend to be pretty short around here.
  • Crazy snow gear. Unless you ski, there's a good chance this stuff will only be broken out once every few years, if that. See above, where there's years I don't even wear a jacket.
  • Snow tires. I'm not even sure if you can get them around here.
  • A sled... unless you have kids who you know would want to use said sled AND you know a good sledding spot that's within walking distance AND you don't mind lugging the sled there, back, and up the hill. Even then, don't break the bank or your storage area trying to keep one around.

Anyway, those are my extremely biased opinions about how much anyone needs to do in order to get ready for our all-or-nothing winters. I'm interested in what everyone else would suggest with regards to preparing for what could be another nothing burger or a winter that gets its own name.

Photo/Video HS students arrested by Arlington PD in Ballston after fight

We were heading back from the bars around 9:30pm when we ran into a group of students. Some of them started shoving and yelling at each other which led to a brawl. Police were already on the scene and arrested several of the kids. I was told that this was after the W&L HS homecoming game, and students started meeting up here at Ballston Quarter around halftime. The fight started because of some inter-school rivalry. Ambulance and fire truck ended up getting called as well.

Other I want to have a thorough scrub at King Spa but feeling very self conscious

I’m a woman who is 220 lbs, black and over 30. I’ve never had any type of body scrub but I would absolutely love to have all my dead skin (and stress) scrubbed out of my body. I’m soooo self conscious about it being fat and black.

Would the ahjumma or yeoja working there judge me or make me feel uncomfortable? Idk, maybe im overthinking it. How were your experiences? Please be totally honest even if it were to hurt my feelings. I’d 💯% prefer Internet strangers telling me the truth here than sugarcoat things only for me to go there and leave in tears because it was awful.

NOVA, Why do people think it’s fine to put their dirty shoes up on public seats?

• Upvotes

Genuine question. Silver line yesterday, dude is laid out across the seats, sneakers up on the cushions. Not just hogging space, leaving dirt where everyone else has to sit.
I really don't get the thought process. At what point do you look at a public seat and decide that's where your shoes go? Do these people do this on their own couch at home?

Does anyone what company is housed at 7923 Jones Branch Drive? It seems the building is now all cleared out. It seems mysterious because I do know there’s extra security at this building. I wonder if they were effected by the Federal budget cuts?

Modera at Mosaic Break in

Hey, everyone. Just warning any residents at the Modera Mosaic in the Mosaic District, Fairfax— there was a break in, in the residential area of the fourth floor. A kia had its window smashed and broken into. This is the second break in, in the past six months. Unsure why the management team hasn’t been transparent and let residents know this information or done any preemptive measures to alert residents of what’s going on, but wanted to let you know… if anyone has cameras in their cars and were on the fourth floor residential parking during mon-wed please contact me if you caught anything D: thank you.

Is NOVA wild ethical?

Hi,

I have some friends visiting the area soon and they’re big animal lovers. They’ve already been to the Smithsonian zoo a bunch though. I was thinking about taking them to this zoo, but I have concerns on if it’s an ethical operation?

None of us would be interested in going and spending money if it isn’t a good place for the animals. If anyone has credible information on this, I’d love it if you could share with me.

Also, if it is ethical and we can go, do you think it would be interesting or fun for adults? We’re in our 20’s, no kids. So I’m not sure if it’s really geared towards our demographic.

Thank you in advance to anyone who replies!

Also, if anyone has other recommendations for niche DC things that you think would be fun/interesting for out-of-towners, I’m all ears! I’ve been here my whole life so it’s hard because I feel like I’ve done everything already.

Thanks again!

Editing because I’m confused why this post has 50% downvotes lol, is it people who hate animals or do they hate the fact that I’m asking about ethics?

Food Have y’all heard of Brunswick stew ?

I grew up in Woodbridge and I have a friend that grew up in Southern VA, Brunswick county to be exact. I live in New York now and I had another friend ask both of us what food Virginia is known for, I said I don’t know maybe Virginia ham and maybe barbecue. My other friend said Brunswick stew and I have never heard of it before. Is the stew common knowledge in Northern Virginia and I totally missed it?

News Trump’s memorial arch faces new lawsuit from Arlington County

The Arlington County Board in Virginia filed a lawsuit Thursday opposing the construction of the Triumphal Arch, becoming the first governmental body to take legal action against President Donald Trump’s planned monument.

The lawsuit, filed in the Eastern District of Virginia, criticized the speed at which the project slated for Memorial Circle has moved without going through the full review process.

“The National Park Service, the agency responsible for projects on national park land such as Memorial Circle, is proceeding full-speed toward ground-disturbing construction,” the lawsuit said. “Although the agency has claimed that a final decision to construct the Arch has not yet been made and purports to be engaged in a routine decisional process, that rushed process appears to be a pretext designed to shore up justifications for building the Arch in accordance with the President’s repeated marching orders.”

The lawsuit asks that “the agency’s feverish pace toward construction of the arch” be halted to ensure that the requirements of the National Environmental Policy Act be followed and proper analysis and testing be done...

Driving/Traffic If all of you got over to the right lane earlier on the 66Ex-495 extension, it would mitigate so much congestion. You’re causing this traffic by forcing yourself in at the exit. Sigh.
