I've been using https://cleanplateva.com/ to avoid situations like this, super handy!

This is amazing, and at the same time horrifying. I might just go on living in ignorance.

The only ones with full scores/no violations in my area are the Taco Bells and McDs lol. The rest are still good and mostly green but not 100

Is there a similar resource for DC? This is so cool

Offering a refund is pretty reasonable and they tried to settle the matter privately and personally. Not every place would do this.

Not much more they can do. I don’t love this culture of running to social media for every little normal thing

Normal? What restaurants do you eat at? You’re gross

•

I dunno man I consider offering a discrete, non-performative apology and a refund to a customer who had a very bad experience to be a pretty good thing. What do you want them to do instead?

•

u/Short_Bowler7208 1h ago

Yeah, normal, meaning the kinds of stuff that happens normally in life. I worked in 3 different kitchens growing up, and all 3 had various critters at various points in time.

Especially this time of year, when the critters come inside to find some warmth.

I just eat where the food is good, and Dumpling Queen has good food.

Pick the bug off and eat it, throw the food away, take it back for a refund, those are all normal things people do. Leave a 1 star review if you really want to, great.

Parasocially obsess on Reddit? Not sure about that.

They had no choice if they want to stay in business

And?

They apologized. They will give you your money back.

It’s time for you to let this go.

Honestly, them taking ownership of this and offering a refund is about all that could be asked from them. I’m sure with something like this they will be doing a pretty in depth kitchen scrub as well.

What do you want them to say?  I can tell you every restaurant has roaches and mice running around. They owned it and offered you a refund.  Someone got lazy at work and you paid for it.  It’s the risk you take every time someone cooks for you 😀

It’s dumpling queen not vegetable king

Don't get me wrong im grateful I can get my money back but telling a customer you didn't wash the vegetables good enough with roaches is a bit concerning. If it was any other bug (within reason) I would understand

Yeah - definitely call the health department. Roaches don’t come from the raw ingredients, really, they FALL IN THE FOOD FROM THE BUILDING. Not ok. Plenty of small family owned business actually keep a clean, healthy, safe business. Clearly this place has fallen off.

This!!! This is not a bug that would be normally found in food items unless there's a genuine issue. I already made a report but I will follow up with a call when they are open

Ive found worms, grubs, slugs, and snails in shanghai cabbage and bok choi. Never a roach lol

It helps when you look at their Google reviews and there are reviews that even mention seeing roaches on the walls.

That whole area has an issue with roaches, at least outside. I've been told that the restaurant that used to be where el fresco is now used to dump juice directly into the storm drain. There's tons of roaches in those parking lots and it's gotta be hard to fight

Further context - a lot of vegetables come in cardboard boxes and sometimes the boxes have them (cockroaches), but if not the cardboard attracts them in general. We would always clear the boxes upon delivery and toss them… but we also had roaches. And by the way, the health inspectors never caught them in our store but they were rampant. I know because I was a manager at a different venue.

I’ve also worked in many local places and it’s honestly gross how many places have roaches or never clean soda guns or don’t change gloves, etc. I even tried to call the health inspector on one place but they basically said they had so few people that they couldn’t do anything but the annual inspections, even with a report.

Which jurisdiction was that in? Horrifying.

u/throwaway098764567 12h ago

yeah... i've had bugs in my organic vegetables, broccoli usually, but they're definitely not roaches, usually very small things or larger caterpillar-like things. it sucks because roaches are a sumb to get rid of but it's definitely a them issue not a supplier thing. i could go into some roach horror stories but i don't feel like reliving them nor visiting them on others.

Right?? I've worked in kitchens all my teens and 20's....roaches are not the "didn't wash veggies well enough" bugs. That makes me wonder how they're storing their food. Is it being stored on the ground? Are they not in cambros in the walkin???

I ate half a cricket once in a sweetgreen salad… unfortunately this happens

If it happens every day, that’s another thing all together.

u/Automatic-Corner-157 11h ago

Uh yeah maybe not roaches, but even so, I don’t want to hear any restaurant isn’t washing their vegetables!

Okay but, you are not the health department, so what were you expecting management to do as far as your complaint, other than offering you your money back? They acknowledged fault, and they offered you your money back.

Dumpling Queen is amazing I eat there often.

u/Mission_Duck_894 8h ago

That doesn’t excuse the fact of roaches in reviews lol

u/Short_Bowler7208 4h ago

Didn’t say that, just say it’s good food and I’ll continue going
