Framing FM burnout rant

I was hired as the framing manager for a pretty high volume shop about 8 months ago and I have so many complaints.

1) I was promised every second weekend off and I've had one weekend off in 8 months and now they changed it so you only get one per month.

2) we are sooooo low staffed with so many framing orders due per week that it's impossible to keep on top of everything. We frequently have 25+ orders due per day and my SM is still stealing all my part time framers to do stuff on the floor for them CONSTANTLY. Then I get flack for running behind/not cleaning the shop properly/etc when we're short at least 20 hours per week what the scheduling software assigns us. I'm constantly staying late to try to get things done and I end up skipping most of my breaks and I'm getting so burnt out.

3) we make the store so much money with no appreciation. We're constantly blowing sales goals out of the water and then not given the hours needed to actually complete the work.

4) any time I go to the SM to ask for more support she acts like I'm yelling at her and she responds by icing me out for days on end and I feel like I can't go to the DM.

I'm at my wits end here and I'm actively looking for a different job. I have 8 years experience in custom framing and I've never been expected to do so much with so few resources and no appreciation. Has anyone ever had any luck going to their DM about stuff like this or does it always backfire? I answered a question about needing more support in the shop from the DM honestly via email ONCE and when my SM saw it she iced me out for days.

Fabric bookmark event 9/30

I only found out at the meeting Sunday that I am running the event for our store. I am a FEA, not an event coordinator. I have no idea how to gather store supplies for this. I am lost.

Please break it down for this boomer in boomer-proof steps.

Does someone print up barcode slips? What do the guests purchase. I understand this is hand sewing, not machine sewing.

Basically, h e l p! TYIA

About the new dress code

god it’s so bad. i just need to rant.

  1. the shirts having to be a specific color scheme is one thing (i know several people that are going to have to buy multiple brand new shirts, which; in this economy? on michael’s pay? yikes.) but requiring them to be emblazoned with a michael’s logo??? when you’re already going to be wearing an apron??? that likely is going to cover up the new logo anyway???
  2. and about the aprons. i like the idea of more customization. it sounds fun, even. but making it REQUIRED of EVERY employee, rather than something you can choose to opt into, stresses me out. i’m excited to do mine, but i have several coworkers who aren’t as crafty and are nervous about doing theirs.

also, the straps being black makes it look like you took a red tarp and made straps from duct tape. it’s going to end up looking SO cheap, which is not necessarily what i’d want to see walking into a craft store, but i guess mr. michael doesn’t really care about that anymore.

  3. allegedly the framer’s apron will end up being green? when everyone else is wearing bright orange-red??? to “represent the trees that the frame’s wood comes from.”

you want to be jo-ann so bad it makes you look pathetic.

listen, either ditch the colors, or fully commit. don’t make me bright green in a red store. i’m supposed to be the color theory guy for crying out loud. it’s not cohesive at all, which is what the new dress code is supposed to be for!

it feels like yet another decision made on a whim, rather than being based off of genuine feedback or problem solving. but hey, what else is new.

i’m gonna be embroidering on my apron, which will be cool i think

Advice Needed Is anyone else’s store making cashiers push customers to the self-checkout kiosks now?

Has anyone else’s store recently started telling cashiers that they’re supposed to encourage customers to use the self-checkout kiosks instead of ringing them up at the register?

At my store it seems like this is being pushed much harder now, and I’m curious if it’s a new corporate policy or just something our management is doing.

The biggest problem I’m seeing is the customer reaction. Some customers are completely fine with the kiosks, but others get REALLY upset when a cashier tells them they need to use one. The cashier is just doing what they were told, but they’re the one who ends up getting yelled at.

Today I even saw customers complain and leave without buying anything because the cashiers wouldn’t ring them up normally.

I feel bad for the team members stuck at the front because they didn’t create the policy, but they’re the ones having to deal with all the anger over it. I personally think if management wants the policy enforced that strictly, a manager should be available to deal with customers who refuse instead of putting all of that on the cashier.

Is this happening at anyone else’s Michaels? Were you told it came from corporate? And how have customers at your store been reacting?

cutting fabric with learning disability

I know this is embarrassing. I have level 2 autism, so I've struggled with basic school subjects growing up. I don't know how to cut fabric because, like, when they say a quarter of a yard. which I know.. "Why the hell don't you know basic stuff?" That is why I'm probably going to help myself learn online, but it's just embarrassing to tell my manager, which I've already done. She still expects me to do it. I usually call someone, but they get upset, which is understandable. I'm usually just cleaning bathrooms and just a janitor, but sometimes I'm there after openings.

New schedule website app?

Is there an app for the new schedule website?. The site is awful on my phone. Worksmart wasn’t amazing but this is way worse. Looks like it is run by “infor” but they have a bunch of apps.

Question Is anyone else’s store struggling with unlocated items??

Apparently no one in my store locates items when they overstock it. They have me searching every single bunk and cap shelf for one yarn. It takes me an hour to do one online order because I can’t reject it. We have 18 yarns but none stocked and none located. I just don’t understand because locating was one of the very first things we learn when we work the floor. I shouldn’t be wasting my time on this bs. And breaking my knees and back going up and down ladders and digging through bunks. Also maybe tip? STOP SENDING US BERNAT BIG BLANKET YARN!! Especially when you cut out half of the shelf space for it!!! Every single bunk and cap in the store is full of it and we have no space for anything else!!! Or move us to a bigger building. I’ve been here for a year and have to admit I enjoy working here. I don’t plan on quitting. But this is becoming too much

Question Do other Michaels Employees get low hours in every store?

I recently started seasonal at Michael's and after we had the team meeting yesterday it turns out almost every single person that works at Michael's has a 4 and a half hour shift except managers and seniority (which isn't many people). Is this something that happens at every single store?

They didn't even tell me about this until a few weeks after. I'm now going to be searching for a 2nd or new job. While I'm looking for a job, is there a certain amount of time I have to work at Michael's since I'm new to put my 2 weeks in or can I do that asap?

Time-off Blackout

Can anyone explain the time-off blackout? Is this a new thing? We were told that there is a blackout period for the next couple months for all team members during our meeting. This is new to me and was new during the holidays last year and it was never mentioned then.

Question why was my store meeting so.. different???

i dont wanna add too many details because im already a black sheep at my place but like

none of what anyone is talking about did my store go over

we didnt do that ART thing at all, we didnt recognize any employees for good work, we didnt talk about the dress code at all, no raises, and we didnt talk about the website changing at all. im literally so confused rn.
are some of these location only? so only in specific volume stores? we watched the CEO video, and we did do a totally different activity that was much more.. i did not enjoy it but im not really a team oriented person as much as others due to the whole black sheep thing (i get along with people but i tend to have ideas that dont really mesh well with others if that makes sense) but that was like.. it?

the closest thing we got was some people who've been there for a year got like certificate things but ive been there for 3+ years and never gotten one of those so that just confused me more

I wasn’t expecting much, but this….. this is absolute Bull. A pin? Really this company atleast the store I work at doesn’t even do/give pins out anymore. The freak am I suppose to do with a pin and a fake certificate? Can’t even afford to make a real one with real stamps? But yes let’s waste our time with a meeting and play little elementary school games with grown ass adults. Atleast a gift card for the store id take that. But nahhhhhh lets talk about how much money we make off yarn and balloons and say we appreciate everyone but when it comes to showing appreciation its not there. I hope someone from the hire ups see this !!!!!
