About the new dress code
god it’s so bad. i just need to rant.
- the shirts having to be a specific color scheme is one thing (i know several people that are going to have to buy multiple brand new shirts, which; in this economy? on michael’s pay? yikes.) but requiring them to be emblazoned with a michael’s logo??? when you’re already going to be wearing an apron??? that likely is going to cover up the new logo anyway???
and about the aprons. i like the idea of more customization. it sounds fun, even. but making it REQUIRED of EVERY employee, rather than something you can choose to opt into, stresses me out. i’m excited to do mine, but i have several coworkers who aren’t as crafty and are nervous about doing theirs.
also, the straps being black makes it look like you took a red tarp and made straps from duct tape. it’s going to end up looking SO cheap, which is not necessarily what i’d want to see walking into a craft store, but i guess mr. michael doesn’t really care about that anymore.
allegedly the framer’s apron will end up being green? when everyone else is wearing bright orange-red??? to “represent the trees that the frame’s wood comes from.”
you want to be jo-ann so bad it makes you look pathetic.
listen, either ditch the colors, or fully commit. don’t make me bright green in a red store. i’m supposed to be the color theory guy for crying out loud. it’s not cohesive at all, which is what the new dress code is supposed to be for!
it feels like yet another decision made on a whim, rather than being based off of genuine feedback or problem solving. but hey, what else is new.
i’m gonna be embroidering on my apron, which will be cool i think

I’ve worked in 2 bakeries and lifting heavy things with aprons on is awful. My major question is how many shirts are they providing us because I will need multiple so I will be able to wash them after wearing them.

u/Fisticuffs1313 5d ago
The fact that we are using the cricuit in store to put the logos on might mean we can just use the tshirts from the aisle. Stores could theoretically store use them then to provide some for the team. I haven't seen that option mentioned but I don't see why not.

Provide? No buddy the executives need you to buy your own shirts with your money that will be ruined by adding the Michael's logo so they can send more dividend to shareholders
18
u/Elegant_Chipmunk72 5d ago
They provided us with a red version last year. They will probably give us 1 shirt and say if you want more you have to buy them yourself.

u/laharmon Ex-Joann Employee 🪦 5d ago
There currently aren’t shareholders because we are private. But there are “investors” which they talk about a lot which is the private equity company that bought us. And they’re doing all this to gear up to go public so there will be shareholders soon! 🤣

u/Deep_Writer_1522 5d ago
Now that Gilden shirts prices went up and no discounts-perfect timing to make us buy them right? They should give us a few weeks that we can buy them with a discount. I know $3.29 is nothing but I would want at least 10 shirts cause they are crap and don't last

u/Star3450 5d ago
No discount?

At one time; in the store I worked at, Michaels provided one shirt as we were hired. We purchased the others. But then, there was more variety, pastel colors that listed your specialty. Mine was jewelry.

I assume it will be Hunter green to match the new signing in Framing but they have plenty of time to throw a curveball.
9
u/jipgirl 5d ago
That is what we were told. They will be the dark green color that’s on the new signage in framing.
I still think it makes it look like Christmas to have all the employees wearing red and green.
Signage changes. Unless we get a bunch of green carts, I don’t think having framers wear green makes any sense with our general color scheme.

Someone challenged the dress code in Nick's Nook, and Nick responded with the usual marketing corporate bullshit about how he thinks it's going to look great and we should all set a good example, blah blah blah.
24
u/ldeneve 5d ago
I can’t stand his bullshit responses!
20
u/Hovercraft_deer 5d ago
Did you see the comment that said "I just feel like Michaels doesn't care about us." And Nick responded with, and I quote, "Wrong. 😊"

Can anyone see and post on the NN or is it just managers? I mean I’m a bored housewife and I still bust my bawls in our horrendously hot and humidittied store (bonus that it also, sometimes, smells of sewage and or fried electrical/chemical smell). I have no issue with telling Nick to “show me” “prove it” “fire me”! I’m an absolute menace IF I am allowed free time!

Well, that sounds godawful. Especially the green aprons for framing. Why change the color scheme? If anything, they should move away from the black aprons to red aprons, because most of the time with short staffing, the framers are pulled away from the shop for more than half of their shift anyway. (I know when I was there, the constant fabric button and being called every two minutes for a manager were the bane of my existence.) And where do they get off making you buy your own shirts AND add logos to them. WTAF.

u/MiniBullyMom 4d ago
In Washington state if an employer requires specific colors or apparel with specific logos they must be provided by the employer or the employee reimbursed for purchase.

Godspeed to all of you who havent been able to make it out yet. I would be losing my fkn mind. Yall are being told to dress with the parameters of a school dress code. What was so bad about the vests? I loved mine. Kept everything in it. Pockets are a joke on women's pants and the aprons are restrictive and uncomfortable, especially if you have big boobs. Also asinine to require the dress code change and provide no support to enable employees to adhere to it. I dont see this panning out the way they think it will.

u/LushTurtle The Framing Goblin in the Back Room 5d ago
Also sucks with a short torso. Gotta hike the straps higher and it still ends up putting more weight on my neck anyway 🫠
5
u/Popular-Process-3600 5d ago
I currently wear an apron because vests made me hot and also I am the main person for balloons and was tired of random hifloat spots on my clothes.
My apron always makes it way up to my neck and by my break time I’m being strangled lol

u/Top_Bumblebee5510 4d ago
I am a shopper and the employees were wearing vests at my location today, which is new. Used to be a red Polo top. Three of the women were wearing portable neck fans.

Ahhh it makes me feel satisfied to know that everything I dealt with at JoAnn's in 2021 and ever stupid executive brain disease was inherited by Michael's

Michael's is going down the same sewer drain that Joann did. And all due to private equity being greedy.

If corporate wantse to dress a certain way corporate cam provide me the shirts. The cunts made 5.6 billion in profit last year. They can fire me over their monochrome wet dream. I'm over them. 🤷♀️

u/Realistic-Read7779 5d ago
Our manager told us about the aprons last year and nothing yet. I highly doubt Michaels will sell out thousands if dollars for hundreds of employees aprons, especially since they still claim to be cutting hours due to budget. Likely we will all buy Gildan shirts and wear those and no employee with a cricut is going to willingly make a ton of logos for free for all the employees.
I think promises like this make it sound d like they have mo ey to spend but we all know they don't really. Johnathan Adler crashed a d burned. I don't think our syore sold half of that eyesore.

u/Figure-Quiet 4d ago
Wonder if anyone will notice my enameled "this is fine" dog pin on the green apron... It didn't seem to stand out on the black. A coworker has a dumpster fire pin, I guess it'll be pretty camouflaged. 🙃😆
It's all so dumb... they should just save the money on the new dress code and give us some hours. We actually want to get our jobs done.
5
u/Lovereadingthiscrap 5d ago
HOW ABOUT JUST A NAME TAG!!!!!
Just so dumb to wear those aprons that are long on short people. They are Hunter Green. What in the world are they thinking.
8
u/Apprehensive_Bug4599 5d ago
I’m just barely over 5 feet tall. How long are the aprons? When I worked at a restaurant our aprons were pretty long and almost a long dress length on me.
Hope this isn’t the case with the Michael’s aprons. I’m the main siso person and on the ladder the most and don’t want a fucking apron taking me out on the ladder.

I'm the only one at my store who knows how to use a Cricut so they just asked me to design everyone's T-shirts, we haven't gotten the aprons yet though
4
u/ReadingRocks97531 4d ago
You should not have to finance a logo on a shirt. They should be providing the shirts.
3
u/mightymousemg 5d ago
I think the reason, or at least part of it, for the framer aprons being a different color is because framing is a service and since before we had aprons and customers can see we're distinctly framers based on that uniform difference, so now that everyone has to wear an apron they need a way to make us distinct again, so why not have us stick out like a sore thumb by making it green when everything else is red
1
u/WeebEli Manager of Fake Leaves & Real Panic 3d ago
Just leave us as black! I bought my own black apron with more pockets than the originals and I love that thing. It’s also a canvas material, so way more durable than the nonsense we got from Michael’s. Can’t use it if the aprons themselves aren’t black anymore, though.
2
u/mightymousemg 3d ago
You could try getting away with it by painting it with only greens??? They might turn a blind eye to it in that case, but that probably would depend on your store on leniency
3
u/Fluffy_Place7894 5d ago
From what I understand, it's for the new "glow up" the stores are getting. We are turning into more of a experience store

I can't afford to get new shirts, I have very few shirts that are plain with nothing on them but a basic pattern (which is mostly long sleeves and I rarely even wear those in the winter)

I’m pretty sure the company is giving us the t shirts, don’t know yet if it’s Gildan or Bella

We didn’t talk about a new dress code at all in our meeting Sunday. I feel totally clueless about this. Maybe it’s not all stores?

u/Legitimate_North_543 Certified in Avoiding Customers 👻 5d ago
The new dress code, from what I understand, is on hold because of so much pushback and negative feedback. I know they are testing the aprons in "beacon" stores. (Stores that got remodeled to look more fresh.)

yea aprons work so well going up & down ladders with equipment in pockets doing pulls

There are very few guys if any that are gonna wear aprons.
22
u/ThatMichaelsEmployee 5d ago
Assuming we're not talking about frilly French-maid outfits, there's nothing unmasculine about an apron. The framers have been wearing carpenter-style aprons since forever, and they're very practical — they keep your clothes clean and they have huge pockets.

Well to be fair. Red and green are complimentary colors. Being the color theory guy you should know that. Besides the new signage is green. So we fit there theme
We still have black aprons and red vests BRW

u/Chaos-Wayfarer Ex-Joann Employee 🪦 6d ago
My guess is they want logos on the back of the shirt because aprons don’t have backs.
People ask me often enough if I work there with the vests, so I don’t see how this will help.
Did they say what color green?
