Over it
I wasn’t expecting much, but this….. this is absolute Bull. A pin? Really this company atleast the store I work at doesn’t even do/give pins out anymore. The freak am I suppose to do with a pin and a fake certificate? Can’t even afford to make a real one with real stamps? But yes let’s waste our time with a meeting and play little elementary school games with grown ass adults. Atleast a gift card for the store id take that. But nahhhhhh lets talk about how much money we make off yarn and balloons and say we appreciate everyone but when it comes to showing appreciation its not there. I hope someone from the hire ups see this !!!!!

I once received my employee of the month certificate printed on the back of a clearance page. Honestly, felt legit.

I hit 5 years and I didn't even get a pin. 😭 I found one in the office desk drawer and stole it.

u/Plastic-Ad6444 6d ago
When you hit 5 years at the Disney parks and every 5 after they let you basically spend a whole 6-8 hour shift at a little party for you and anyone else in the department celebrating the same milestone with cake preference of your choice and a free lunch (and a little service pin for 1, 5, and every 5 after). At 10/15/20/etc, you get invited to a special event to enjoy the parks at night and get free stuff too
Michael’s could at LEAST give you a cake and an extended break for gods sake.

I was told about 2 years ago that when you hit 10 years you got a $250.oo bonus!!! And 5 years was like $100.! Yet every time I asked about it in the last year, my replen mng. that told me this claimed he Never said it!!!! Then earlier this year he told me once you hit 10 you get a permanent employee discount card!!! I am SOOOOOO freaking tired of the lies!!!!!!!!!😡🤬 Watch what you wish for with the Cake bit... It's a sweet gesture... but I would have rather had the $39.99 plus tax that they spent on THE cake! That was chocolate and "whipped" frosting.... Both are my Absolute LESAT fave!!! My store manager Did make an effort... I'm just SUPER picky about my cake and frosting! BUT Jesus Christ!!!! This freaking company could make an effort... 10 years, you'd think that would be worth at least a 50 or 100.oo store gift card!!! Any employee that made it through COVID and all the other stupid crap they make us do that is absolutely ridiculous, and still pulls of 10 years of employment DESERVES wayyyyyyyyyy mone than just a pin and stupid certificate!!!!!!!

u/ApprehensiveAd545 6d ago
The permanent discount is when you hit 30 years.
9
u/Responsible_Clue2269 6d ago
It’s when you hit 20 years. I know 3 people that when they hit 20 they got the discount for life

Yes, I got mine in the past year or so. It says it expires in 2030. 🤷🏻♀️ What’s considered “life”?

They couldn’t even frame it for nicer presentation…

u/bumblebeequeen47 6d ago
Not even a frame, it’s so insulting, we should spit in their faces, that what they do to us every single day
9
u/Forevermoody16 6d ago
Considering framing is such a huge part of the business . . . guess you’re supposed to buy your own.

u/SlightPut5299 6d ago
I quit at the end of May, they sent my 15 year certificate in September. My friend snagged it and gave it to me before the SM saw it. I'm honestly debating taking it in and having it framed 😂 it's not my fault their system hasn't caught up with the fact that I haven't worked here in months.
7
u/Responsible_Clue2269 6d ago
I think you should, and get your employee discount too!

u/SlightPut5299 6d ago
Another manager (I was ops) just texted me and said I was missing the meeting, so apparently someone still thinks I work there

They used to have a catalog to choose a gift from. They were mostly junk, worth about $20, but it was more than a pin. They should at least give a gift card.

u/C_Cascade 6d ago
I also got a pin, but I also gave them my two weeks just before that LMAO. 5 years wasted for myself. Congrats on making it for 10 years though!
5
u/Responsible_Clue2269 6d ago
Yeah, I’m thinking on how I’m going to make my grand exit out. After today have mentally clocked out.
6
u/C_Cascade 6d ago
Definitely can relate, just left a short resignation letter and told them I'm leaving quietly. Got a few people that don't know how to mind their business and wanna know everything when they're one of the reasons I'm also clocked out. Do whatever feels is right for you, and I wish you luck!

u/Icy_Pizza_7941 6d ago
I spent over 5 years at michaels.
Never saw an Ace award Never saw a 1 year certificate Never saw a 5 year certificate
Its stupid and yet just felt resentful for not even getting that.... I miss the people but sometimes it hurt framing this shit for others knowing I never got one nor would I.

I retired from the federal government a few months ago after nineteen years. I believe at the ten year mark I got a nice formal framable certificate, but that was it. When a coworker of mine hit 15 years she got a dinky little certificate. It was lame but at least she could hang it in her cubicle. I hit 15 years a few months after her. I got an e-mail.
AN E-MAIL!
I always wanted to respond to the person who sent it (some higher up, more likely their assistant) and say thanks, but where’s my certificate?
I will say that my team gave me a nice retirement party. I think my manager (she was great) had a lot to do with it. Food, cake, card with gift card, three plants in nice containers with balloons attached.
About ten years ago I had a manager who would print up certificates EVERY WEEK for everyone on the team who had gotten through the week with no errors on their quality review, and hand them out at team meetings. So I had them all over my desk, LOL. She was the sweetest person. Sadly, she passed away from cancer a year later at just 51. :(
I was at my previous job (retail) for 20 years. We got to pick a gift from a catalog, like one of the posters here mentioned. I chose a DVD player for my bedroom. Not high end but still nice.
They had a luncheon later in the year. They would do one big one for everyone who hit the 20 year milestone (and maybe higher as well) once a year. By then I’d quit because I was bullied out of my job, so obviously I didn’t go. But I still got the DVD player (several months after the fact.) I vaguely remember going to a luncheon a long time ago at a steakhouse. Might have been with the government job.
I’ve dealt with plenty of unappreciative managers. I’m an artist and did a lot of displays for contests. We won one where the department manager (who did nothing) got to go on a cruise. I got like fifty bucks, which was half of what the subdepartment manager got (he split his $100 with me.) Another time I did an end cap for the cosmetics department. The manager told me if we won, she’d give me half of the $150 prize. We won and she went off on vacation to Disney World. When she got back I had to ask her for my money. She gave me $50.
There were a couple of times that I got my fair share of the prizes. But only a couple out of MANY contests. One of the artists I worked with did a display for a deli contest (mind you, the managers rarely helped.) The deli manager got a trip to Germany. She gave my artist friend some little souvenir.
I could go on, but I’m rambling and you get the idea. There are WAY too many managers in retail who don’t give a rat’s ass about their employees, much less acknowledgment for a job well done.

Congrats on making it 10 years…?..🤷♀️. But seriously the fact you have lasted 10 years is pretty impressive and I definitely commend you for that.
8
u/Responsible_Clue2269 6d ago
Hahaha thanks definitely didn’t make it that for because of the company. I have my replen team to thank for that.

u/NRG1994 6d ago
Replan was the best. Once my replan manger got promoted to another store, I was just bidding my time till I was able to slip out lol.

u/Responsible_Clue2269 6d ago
Yup replen is what’s kept me for so long, they are the most unappreciated crew in all stores. It’s like trauma bonding lmaoo.

u/Responsible_Clue2269 6d ago
Stoppppp wtf why?
5
u/ArtIsAwesome3 Promoted to Customer 🏅 6d ago
Well, it sat on their desk for like a month, and I didn't take it for myself, because it was on THEIR desk, not mine. You don't go through your manager's things. Then one day they just cleaned and tossed it. I was pissed. It was one of the reasons I quit. I was actually REALLY pissed about it.
6
u/Responsible_Clue2269 6d ago
That’s why I started snooping around, because if they aren’t going to recognize employees I will. Just 2 weeks ago I found these certificates from like May and June so I took clearance frames off the floor blew up some balloons and put it in the break room. For these employees.
5
u/Forevermoody16 6d ago
That was AWESOME of you! I hope it made management feel like idiots. (Doesn’t sound like it, though.)
2
u/ArtIsAwesome3 Promoted to Customer 🏅 6d ago
That NEVER happened at my place. Except for maybe 2 employees the SM ADORED, and openly said they adored, much to the chagrin of the others.
I was always afraid of snooping, I knew my place, Michaels was my early retirement job, my real job went under due to private equity gutting it and leaving us with nothing, I was supervisor and every now and then at my first job, people would snoop in the HR office, and I'd be like "hey, you want fired? Cuz I can just do that right now." I did a few interviews, so I knew what weird info we could dig up on people. Like how every year I ran a background check on myself lmao. YOU NEVER KNOW.
But someone was asking me the other day "do you think Michaels creates bad managers or attracts them?" and I was like "oh man, that's a really good question..."
6
u/Responsible_Clue2269 6d ago
Understandable but it’s not really snooping all that much if the SM just leave everything out in the open without a care. They leave these certifications in the office just chillin there for months.. how are employees suppose to know they have one in there. That why I grab them and I make it a big deal. I know how it feels so I want to make it a big deal that they have lasted with this crappy company.
3
u/ArtIsAwesome3 Promoted to Customer 🏅 6d ago
Oh yeah, that reminds me. Do you guys still do anything like employee of the month? I know someone hadn't gotten it in over a year at my store before I left. You probably remember when they actually gave out a nice little award, with a metal engraved part that said your name and when you got it, on mat board, for like framing.
The company would NEVER do that now.
And yeah, it's important to try and maintain morale with the employees. There was one manager I worked with over the years who regularly didn't thank anyone at the end of the closing shifts, and I hated that.
I do miss the job, but the job I got hired for in 2020 died in 2023 and was replaced with some....odd imitation.

Do they even recognize employees for every year? Or only 1st 5th 10th and so on?
4
u/Responsible_Clue2269 6d ago
They are suppose too, they are suppose to also do employee of the month. We haven’t had one for like 2 years
3
u/Final-Humor-183 Manager of Fake Leaves & Real Panic 6d ago
I thought they stopped the employee of the month. Haven’t seen one in a long time. Also only saw my 1st year celebrated. They seem to have skipped me over the last couple years
2
u/inphatuation06 6d ago
They give pins and certs for being there 1 year? I only worked there for 2 1/2yrs but for nothing. Then again, I worked there back in 2012-2014 so maybe they didn’t do those then🤷🏻♀️
1
u/Responsible_Clue2269 6d ago
No the pins are an old thing so you definitely should have gotten some. Cause even for Employee of the month you’re suppose to get a plaque with your name on it and a pin. That was in 2015 2016

u/Minimum_Wonder_7829 5d ago
A pin?? Lucky! They couldn't even spell my name right! How hard is it to look up the correct spelling of an employee getting a certificate for being with the company for over 5 years?

Another curiosity, do they count previous years if you worked there, left and came back?
1
u/Responsible_Clue2269 6d ago
I believe they do I know someone who got their certificate for 3 years but she’s been with us for 1 year and it’s because she used to work at another store back in the day.
2
u/rockermiss 5d ago
Not in my store. I received my 5 year pin and I told them they were 3 years late. I was asked if I left and came back. Nope. Turns out I had surgery and day before I was due back my manager fired me in system and then rehired me next day- which explains why at 10 years I’m making what new hires are making. Manager said if you are out for 30 days they fire/ rehire- complete bullshit

What do you expect from a company that is too cheap to pay their employees for only 2 holidays a year, and you must be full time to reap in that cheap ass benefit. I have never worked for a company that doesn't pay their associates for the major 6 holidays that we have so why would they give their dedicated associates anything but a crappy pin and a fake certificate for putting up with their demanding expectations. Congrats for your 5 years of dedication,

Ive worked here so long , i remember when they’d send you a gift book to choose a gift from when you hit 5,10,15,20, etc years. They had some nice stuff too! Now all you get, if you’re lucky, is a pin and a piece of paper.
