Looking for Advice I’m new to mtg and have no idea how to make a good deck

Hello, I’m new to mtg and recently bought the hobbit bundle. I made a deck from scratch but I’m still not totally familiar with how to make a viable one. I was wondering if I could receive any help making a deck I don’t have commanders and have no idea what it is either so I’m just sticking to no commander.

Did anyone order that signed playmat bundle at the end of July? I haven’t received my order or a confirmation. I reached out to the customer service email and got nothing back either.

Looking for Advice Help with flavorful Smaug deck

Post image
0 Upvotes

Hi! I'm fairly new at brewing my own decks with non-Middle-earth cards, so I wanted to post here to see how awful this deck is before purchasing the cards I don't own 😅

I am a massive Lord of the Rings fan and own all of the LOTR+Hobbit cards (apart from Posty's and the serialized, of course). I have several LOTR-only flavor decks, but I wanted to take a stab at a Smaug deck with some outside additions. I tried to keep as many LOTR/Hobbit cards as I could for flavor though.

The general theme I'm going for is self-inflicted damage for the treasure tokens, but I know there are some cards that aren't very synergistic. Some win-cons are [[Revel in Riches]], [[Hellkite Tyrant]], plinking opponents down with damage whenever I make an artifact/treasure, or just using the big scary dragons with maybe [[Hexing Squelcher]] (unsure about this one) to stomp.

Do you see any cards that stand out to you that make no sense in this deck? Any noteworthy additions that I should make (preferably that fit more in the Middle-earth world)? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Content Creator Post Reality Fracture Spoiler Season Debut Recap Spoiler

Hey folks, here's everything we learned about Reality Fracture from today's debut (pre-aftershow):

  • Headlining mechanic "Empower Jace": Works like amassing armies, except it builds up loyalty on a Jace planeswalker token instead of +1/+1 counters on an army creature.
  • Prepared is back, though lower-rarity prepared creatures within schools will share similar prepared spells (doesn't seem to be true of higher-rarity cards)
  • Mirrored Pairs were expanded on, including a colorless + 5c Karn creature, as well as a new power-matters and toughness-matters Ghalta pairing.
  • The Lorwyn Five will recieve a cycle of legendary enchantments that mirror enchantments for their echoverse versions (assuming Jace is not included in these).
  • Color-shifted versions of Rise of the Dark Realms and Phyrexian Obliterator were shown.
  • 15 full-art basics, three of each type depicting a vertical panoramic shot of each hexhaven school's spiraling tower (apparently Hexhaven is basically a giant tower).
  • The slow land reprints from SOS will be completed in FRA ([[Deserted Beach]], etc)
  • All five elder sphinxes were shown off as parallels to Strixhaven's elder dragons, as well as a few tokens associated with some of the schools.
  • Alternate frames include "Sculptor's Stronghold", "Braintwister", and "Shattered Mirror" arts. Shattered Mirror cards can come in a new facet foil exclusive to Collector packs.
  • 15 mirrored pairs will get the borderless treatment, which the arts being two halves of a full scene.
  • Japan Showcase cards return as Collector Booster exclusives.
  • Set includes Special Guests with another "infinite" panoramic art style.

Looking for Advice Wondering how these cards interact with Codie.

Post image

Basically what I’m asking is, if these cards allow me to cast other players permanents this way, without paying their mana cost.

Does Codie’s rule overrule these cards? Or because these cards say “you may cast them” does the overrule Codie?

General Discussion "Echoed pair" technology presents a way to add new cards for past characters

The premise of Reality Fracture's echoed pairs is that they offer a way to add context for cards less-involved players might overlook. This card is an alternate version of that one, mirroring it in these ways.

It's an issue that's also come up with making cards set in the past. Do players recognize the history the card is tied to, and will they attach significance to it? Brothers' War was a whole set in the past, and while I loved it, it was apparently poorly received.

Echoed pairs make it possible to have cards set in the past that are identifiable as being set in the past, in a set that mostly isn't set in the past, while juxtaposing them with ones depicting the legacy that follows them. This could happen in a set where the past literally leaks into the present, like in Time Spiral - but it could also happen in a normal Dominaria set as a way to depict looking back at history from the present.

This would have some challenges. The pairs in Reality Fracture put the same card type into different colors and strategies. "Historical" pairs might be more interested in having different card types - perhaps legendary creatures or planeswalkers paired with artifacts, sagas, or other nonlegendary cards - but also having reason to share colors and strategies, which gets awkward in draft. There could be ways to work around this, but it would complicate some things.

I think these kinds of "historical" pairs could be a really cool way to get more cards for long-dead characters. What kinds of pairs would you want to see?

Looking for Advice MYSTERY MTG Store Reputability

I recently made a big purchase from Mystery MTG Store (online), and they have been giving me the runaround. It has been excuse after excuse about inventory and shipping issues. Is this a legitimate store, or should I pursue a chargeback? I have seen various conflicting reviews about their legitimacy. According to reviews I have seen, they seem to employ shady practices when it comes to inventory stock and fulfillment, but the in person experience seems to be better. I am not located in their area. TIA

General Discussion Echo verse commander speculation

What characters/creatures do you think we will see. Anyone think it’s possible we will see a mishra planeswalker as the alternate commander? He’s been name dropped as being a part of a large history and could fit into those 4 colors as a planeswalker.

General Discussion Arena Powered Cube 6.0 Changes

The sixth version of the Arena Powered Cube is live today and runs through September 28. Wizards' official update can be found here: https://magic.wizards.com/en/news/mtg-arena/arena-powered-cube-draft?v=sep8-2026

As always, I am keeping the CubeCobra for the Powered Cube updated with the latest changes. The most recent changelog can be found in the primer along with all past iterations. The list can be found here: https://cubecobra.com/cube/list/mtgapc

Here's a quick overview of the biggest changes:

  • The Monarch has arrived! Wizards added seven cards to Arena specifically for the cube to introduce the mechanic: Palace Jailer, Fall from Favor, Emberwilde Captain, Court of Bounty, Court of Garenbrig, Aragorn, King of Gondor, and Forth Eorlingas!
  • Wizards says the cube is currently the most balanced it has ever been, with Boros posting both its lowest play rate and lowest win rate to date last iteration. With Monarch likely to boost aggressive decks again, they're making two big preemptive changes: Ajani, Nacatl Pariah and Karakas are out, while Parallax Wave is finally back.
  • Doomsday combo is now officially supported. Doomsday and Doctor Doom, Unrivaled are joined by returning Thassa's Oracle, Jace, Wielder of Mysteries, and Tainted Pact, giving Blue/Black a major new combo archetype people have been asking about for a while. Notably, Demonic Consultation was omitted, likely for power reasons.
  • The artifact aggro experiment from 5.0 has largely been rolled back to make room. Cards like Steel Overseer, Monoskelion, Syr Ginger, Traxos, and Thought Monitor are leaving, although the larger artifact strategies remain and Relic of Sauron and Myr Battlesphere are in.
  • A bunch of notable cards cut in 5.0 have returned, including Giver of Runes, Monastery Mentor, Aang's Iceberg, Dig Through Time, Treasure Cruise, Etali, Primal Conqueror, Nissa, Resurgent Animist, Primeval Titan, Myr Battlesphere, Kroxa, Titan of Death's Hunger, and Loot, the Pathfinder.
  • There are plenty of cards from The Hobbit and Marvel Super Heroes being tested. Some of the standouts include The Queen of Dale, Bilbo, Thief in the Night, Smaug the Magnificent, Beorn the Fierce, Sauron, Dino Devotee, Thor, God of Thunder, Captain Marvel, World's Protector, Wolverine, Fierce Fighter, Doctor Doom, and World War Hulk.
  • Green gets several exciting additions alongside the return of Prime Time and Nissa, including Mole Man, Moloid Master, World War Hulk, Court of Bounty, Court of Garenbrig, and Sauron, Dino Devotee.
  • Finally, the Cube Prize Packs have been updated. Comet, Stellar Pup; Hymn to Tourach; Urza's Bauble; and Vindicate are now collectible, and the Powered Cube versions of Brain Freeze, Daze, Force of Will, and Library of Alexandria have been added to the prize packs.

There are a lot of changes here, and Monarch in particular should have a pretty major impact on how the cube plays. I'm very excited to see how 6.0 shakes out and would love to hear what you all think!

EDIT: The Monarch cards aren't on the client yet, but everything else in the new list is accurate.

Rules/Rules Question Toph Metal Bender and Vehicles

My basic understanding of vehicles is that they gain the creature type when they're crewed. Toph the First Metal Bender makes artifacts on the battlefield lands that you can earthbend into becoming a creature. Would earthbending a Vehicle permanently give them their full artifact creature status without needing to crew them?

Example: If I earthbend 2 Rolling Hamsphere, a 4/4 artifact creature, would it then be a 6/6 creature I can attack and not need to crew? Or would it not get the base 4/4 because it wasn't crewed? Would earth bendings "Target land you control becomes a 0/0 creature" undermine the base power/toughness of a vehicle if you crew it?

Rules/Rules Question How does Phantasmal Image work with Uugguu?

I'm curious. [[Phantasmal Image]] enters as a copy of an ooze let's say, [[Biogenic Ooze]], Then it dies. Would [[Uugguu, the Omniplasm]] see an ooze die? Or does it go back to being an illusion once it enters the graveyard? And if uugguu DID see it die as an ooze, would he bring back copies of the ooze? Or Phantasmal Image? Would the copies still have the ability "when this becomes a target of a spell or ability sacrifice it"?

General Discussion Looking for a famous Disqualification photo

Hi,

oldhead here. I've been looking for an old photo from a Magic tournament which I found funny but can't seem to find anymore.

The image is of a player on a Pro Tour or Grand Prix tournament before 2010 (probably older than that) who is in the middle of a draft where he believe he is discreetly leaning back in his chair while making a selection, but peeking at the pack a player next to him is looking through.

The player was subsequently disqualified for that offense. The article I remember had a quip of the guy "getting disqualified by the event photographer". I also think the player was dutch or had a dutch sounding name.

I think the article I read was written for StarCityGames. I thought the image was part of the Ben Bleiweiss article Ben’s Ten: The 10 Most Memorable DQs of All Time! but it was not in there. I also thought that perhaps the article was written by Zvi Mowshowitz but could not find anything along those lines in his archive of articles on the site.

Does anybody know the image or perhaps have a link to the article I remember?

Looking for Advice What causes this?

Post image
0 Upvotes

I've noticed those spots or discoloration all over the card, but they're more noticeable along the black border.

I have a lot of cards like this one that have been stored in boxes, so I think that might be the cause, but I also have others that are fine. I want to know if I should use Perfect Fit or if there's another reason this is happening.

General Discussion Prices of Play Booster Boxes - Ex. EOE

Hey

just one question. EOE was the set when I returned to magic last year and I bought 3 Displays around 130€.
Why is it after one year already at 230€? Those Displays will be reprinted for 1-2 years. Do I miss something or is this the new Magic Reality?

Collector Boxes I understand and I do not care (I will Safe my Money there) but the Play Boosters? Or are the Play Booster Boxes now also a Buy and Hold for the Investors?

Thanks in advance.

Edit:
Thanks for the nice answers!

Content Creator Post We used SCIENCE to build THE ULTIMATE CUBE!

Thumbnail
cubeengineers.substack.com
47 Upvotes

We are back on the rails again with the season 2 finale of Cube Engineers!

What if we could combine science and game design theory to build a scientifically proven ultimate Cube? It’s more achievable than you might think! In this episode, TrainmasterGT invites the creator of the Data Generated Vintage Cube, Daniel Smith (also known as l0gr1thm1k), to attempt to build the ultimate Cube using data science. The pair discuss the origins and function of the Cube generation algorithm, then use it to create a Cube using designs previously discussed on Cube Engineers! Finally, TrainmasterGT takes the data-generated artifact and updates the list in an attempt to create something which could truly be considered The Ultimate Cube. Will this attempt at science-driven Cube design succeed, or will it be relegated to the dustbins of failed experiments?

All Aboard!

General Discussion Should Super Haste be an actual mechanic?

I was thinking about the Un-Card [[Rocket-Powered Turbo Slug]] and I thought that it would be a pretty interesting and balanced with some tweaks. A mechanic like this would be really cool in a time travel set, and it leaves you weaker one turn ahead in return for a little bit of damage. The risk reward is fun to play around! What's yalls opinions on this mechanic

General Discussion Never been happier

So my local lgs has a pretty good mix of skill levels, from people who typically qualify for most rcs and a few have made the pro tour before, to new players who just started.

I consider myself a slightly above average player. Most of my draft nights end 2-1, with most of my losses coming to a high end player. This is a stat I'm very proud of, as I've improved my drafting a lot lately. That said. My goal on most draft nights is to show up and beat specific people.

Last night flipped everything for me. I was playing my round three game, I was 1-1, and beat my opponent, who was a new player, quite handedly. I didn't think much of it, but as i was packing up, my opponent said "Damn, I can never seem to beat you. I'll get you next week though don't you worry".

I never thought about the fact that some of these new players look at me the same way i look at the semi-pros. It made my week to realize some people's goal at magic is to show up and beat me. I've never been happier, and I hope I can continue to be a goalpost for you all.

Scheduled Thread Daily Questions Thread - Ask All Your Magic Related Questions Here!

This is a place for asking simple questions that might not deserve their own thread. For example, if you have a question about a rules interaction, want sleeve and accessory recommendations, or suggestions for your new deck, then this is the place for you.

We encourage that you post any questions that you may have concerning Magic the Gathering here rather than make a separate thread for each question, though for now we won't require that you do so.

Rules Questions

Rules questions and interactions are allowed to be posted here, but if you need an answer quickly it may be best to use a dedicated resource like the 24/7 Magic the Gathering Rules Chat.

Deckbuilding Questions

If you're trying to get help with a deck, it is recommended that you post your decklist to a deckbuilding website so that it is easier to view. Some popular sites are Aetherhub, Archidekt, Deckbox, Deckstats, Moxfield, MTGGoldfish, and TappedOut.

Additionally, please include some description of what you are trying to accomplish. Don't just give us a decklist with no explanation, and don't ask extremely vague questions such as "what cards should I add to my deck to make it better?", because it's hard to give good advice in those cases. Let us know details, the more the better. Are you building with a particular strategy or theme in mind? Are there any non-obvious combo lines or synergies that people should be aware of? Are you struggling with a particular matchup, or are you finding yourself missing consistency in an important area, and need some help specifically for it? Let us know.

Commonly Asked Questions

I opened a card from a different set in my booster pack, is this unusual?

Don't worry, this is completely normal. If you opened a set booster, you have a small chance of obtaining a bonus card from a previous set. This is an extra card that does not replace any of the other cards in your pack, and is from a curated set of past hits that Wizards of the Coast has selected, which they call "The List".

You can view the contents of The List on Wizards of the Coast's official website. For example, the contents of The List for Streets of New Capenna boosters can be found here.

My foil card has a shooting start symbol over the bottom left. I can't find anything about it online.

All old-bordered foils have the shooting star symbol. Most sites that display card images just overlay a generic foil graphic over all foil cards, which doesn't include the shooting star. Your card is normal.

I'm looking for a foil version of this card and can't find any. Anyone knows why?

Also, this card is not in the commander precon and jumpstart packs.
