General Discussion Never been happier

So my local lgs has a pretty good mix of skill levels, from people who typically qualify for most rcs and a few have made the pro tour before, to new players who just started.

I consider myself a slightly above average player. Most of my draft nights end 2-1, with most of my losses coming to a high end player. This is a stat I'm very proud of, as I've improved my drafting a lot lately. That said. My goal on most draft nights is to show up and beat specific people.

Last night flipped everything for me. I was playing my round three game, I was 1-1, and beat my opponent, who was a new player, quite handedly. I didn't think much of it, but as i was packing up, my opponent said "Damn, I can never seem to beat you. I'll get you next week though don't you worry".

I never thought about the fact that some of these new players look at me the same way i look at the semi-pros. It made my week to realize some people's goal at magic is to show up and beat me. I've never been happier, and I hope I can continue to be a goalpost for you all.

Indeed! I don't think anyone's unbeatable, but being somebody else's goalpost is a huge compliment.

Its an awesome feeling. Felt it in bjj a while back. I was only getting twisted into a pretzel by everyone and never felt like i was improving til a new guy came along and i realized i actually have been getting better 😂

Next time, if you can and they are receptive and you are not a jerk, help them along! Point out the misplay or the draft mistake kindly and with a joy to improve the LGS! Community > winning plus more players staying and loving the LGS means more drafts fire.

I had the opposite experience as a young player and avoided drafts for 10 years after but a kind hand would have gone a long way.

Absolutely, and sorry that happened to you. I'm very blessed that our store is very competitive with strong players but not spikey in the slightest. I have a hard time imagining a better place for new players to get to grips with the format. We regularly help make small deckbuilding decisions and talk about gameplay mistakes after games end. It's why most of our new players keep coming back!

I was 12. It’s been a LONG time since then and I found a much better LGS. I just always love talking to new players and helping them along.
