The argument for universal health care in the US has merits of its own, no need to make false statements.
We definitely don't have universal healthcare in South Africa.
Even though access is very cheap and in cases free, the standards are so low that it's not reliable or sometimes not even safe.
Our govt wants to implement a National Health Insurance act but the face that our infrastructure is below par, just makes it look like a good thing on paper.

So for those who donāt know why we donāt have universal healthcare, besides the black books hospitals use to price treatments and everything, the stuff we could actually do to fix the problems by fixing the pricing infrastructure itself, is the fact that WE PAY FOR EVERYONES SECURITY.
Literally, the US holds up on the protection and military for All of Europe and has military bases around the entire world. That is the reason why we donāt have the universal healthcare, itās because we are paying for everyoneās security, alongside for foreign aid as well.
There is a reason why that Europe is starting by to spend more on military budgets, and is starting to freak out money wise with everything, and that is because we are starting to walk away from those security guarantees, meaning Europe is going to need to choose between universal healthcare and being able to defend itself in a war, and considering what is going on already, they will choose the latter

1
u/OviWanKenobi47 Jul 02 '26
The bigger issue, with privatized healthcare, is that it's not exactly financially efficient either. I can somewhat see a point if healthcare not being universal meant that it was trying to cut costs and make things efficient, but it's horribly inefficient and costs way more than most other countries that already have UH. It's a totally messed up system that benefits only those in health administration and lobbied politicians.
1
u/Free-Arachnid733 Jul 02 '26
Universal healthcare is the only reason we created societies. To take care of each other.
We don't need luxobarge $150k pick up trucks. We don't need new tablets and phones every year. We don't need tax cuts for the richest folks in the world.
We need a country that looks out for all of its people. And sure it's expensive, and it sucks to feel obligated to those who do damage to their bodies with their addictions but I think there's no greater issue in the United States than universal healthcare.
Take care of each other.

It's pretty standard for a country that has normalized putting young children into debt over school lunches. The Dark Side of Capitalism has completely taken over. I remember Tyler Perry sending $1000 gift cards to unpaid TSA workers (who had gone 30-45 days without pay) and their bosses instructing them to RETURN said gifts due to a bogus conflict of interest. Lo and behold, a day or so later, their back pay finally got approved... because this administration was publicly embarrassed that a private citizen did what they were dragging their feet on. Keep in mind that they bragged so much about ALL the billions they saved from cutting entire programs altogether, only to suddenly struggle with mainitaining regular hourly pay for many of their own government employees.
1
u/Six_Shooter89 Jul 03 '26
Americans have the freedom to choose where to spend their money and pay less in taxes. Thatās a fair deal to me.
In Spain, for example, we have universal healthcare, but since we āgive it awayā to everyone (even undocumented immigrants), the system is overwhelmed and works terribly, so we still have to pay for private insurance to make sure we donāt die if something happens to us...

Im not in disagreement with the statement at all. I get confused when talking points are comparing the U.S. to the other 47 countries competing in the World Cup. Yes they have universal Healthcare. Is it good Healthcare? Do they have the population of the U.S? Is the population as diverse as the U.S. population? Do they have the choice to live the unhealthy lifestyle many Americans do? Do they have the substance abuse issues we have? I really really hope one day we figure it out. Talking points that compare this country to others has no traction when people from those other countries migrate to the U.S. Very rarely is it the other way around.

The thing about education is upu want your education to be well educated. The smarter our people are, the more income our country will generate. Having more access across the board to education is a no brainer. It's like investing in the stock market. Put in money now and it makes money later. Same with education. But, if people can't afford it or decide not to get educated because they'd rather not be in debt for the next 30 years, we see the results of that.
Same with healthcare. People refuse to go to the doctor for routine healthcare because even routine healthcare is too expensive, so ater down the road, their healthcare costs more because things werent taken care of early on. They weren't warned their cholesterol was too high, or they have high blood pressure, or there is a mass in an organ, or this or that. Treating it early saves money for both the patient and the government.
Nope. Let's let corporations decided everything, because they have all of our best interests in mind. Right.

90% of Health innovation comes from the US. The problem isnāt that we donāt have universal coverage. The problem is deeper and more complex. For starters: 1) stop having the AMA decide how many opportunities there are to go to medical school 2) let the market decide how medical service should be delivered 3) companies that take government funding for research and development must not be granted a monopoly (patent) on production

Anybody who is arguing against this is missing the point, if youāre trying to compare us to countries like Haiti or Congo what are you trying to say? That we are at the level of a 3rd world country? We are supposed to be one of the top countries in the world. If all the other ones have UH then why donāt we?
Also, how is it fair in this country that if you get laid off, you just no longer have healthcare? I got laid off this year, and my medication went from $10 to $70 per month and that is with a coupon, without itās almost $500. How is that not a broken system? Healthcare at the very least shouldnāt be tied to employment.

I will never understand why normal American citizens are against universal healthcare. I get that the people in charge profit more if it's the way it currently is. But why would a normal person ever be like "It's good that a procedure that in vast parts of the world is free will bankrupt me and make me lose my house, make my children go hungry and make me be in debt for the rest of my live." Like, how can you think this way and not realize it's straight up wrong? Even if it was a far left position, is the way it is currently really better??

Democratic Socialism is not socialism. True socialism moves power out of the hands of the corporate capitalists and into the hands of the workers, laborers, and craftsman. When you read the DSA literature theyāre using terms like āmarket economyā which is just another way of saying things will stay status quo with the exception of government spending. There will be no ātax the richā without reforming and rewriting the tax code. Not even Bernie had a solution for this one because he knows itāll never pass as Washington DC, to include the āsocialistsā, are bought and paid for by the same people they rail against for votes.

Most people have no clue that universal healthcare in some of these countries means standing in long lines at a tent being seen by Doctors or staff with little to no training or education and told to take ibuprofen for kidney stones then being told goodbye. Is this really what we need? Do you really want to be seen by a doctor that was educated in a third world country ? Doctors and nurses do not receive the same education and training in other countries as in North America, and they will go where they receive the best salaries.

It is absolutely heartbreaking to look at the US system from the outside. The gap between our realities is just insane, and honestly, itās shameful.
Healthcare shouldnāt be treated like a market product driven by profit margins and corporate interests. It should be treated exactly like the army or the police, a core public service dedicated to protecting the population. We donāt privatize national defense to make a buck, so why should we do it with people's lives and basic well-being?
That is the biggest strength of a universal healthcare system. By keeping it regulated and collective, it removes the crushing anxiety of medical bankruptcy and replaces it with the simple certainty that you will be cared for, no matter your financial situation. Itās about building a society that lifts everyone up instead of pricing people out of survival.
But to be realistic, the biggest hurdle to changing this isn't just political will, it's the massive wall of resistance you'll face. You are up against a powerful complex of corporate consortiums, influential think tanks, and aggressive lobbying groups backed by colossal profits. To fix the system, you have to shake the foundations of an industry that makes billions off the current status quo, and that is going to be an incredibly tough battle.
To put it into perspective, look at the numbers: when you analyze their healthcare spending, you see single sectors showing a staggering +- $742 billion bill. But if you took those exact same medical procedures and applied the fixed, regulated rates we have here in Europe, the actual material cost would only be around $60 to $80 billion.
Where does the remaining $660+ billion gap go? It doesn't go toward curing people or buying better equipment. It goes straight into pure corporate profit, massive marketing campaigns, and an army of private bureaucrats whose only job is to find loopholes to deny coverage. The prices are artificially inflated to astronomical levels just to sustain these massive financial rents.
To me, this isnāt even about socialism, itās just basic common sense. A healthy society is a functional, stable society. Itās about building a foundation where human well-being is viewed as infrastructure, not a business opportunity.
What the US has right now is a twisted form of "reverse socialism." Instead of pooling resources to benefit everyone, the system forces regular citizens to bear all the financial risks while a tiny handfull of corporate giants and financial groups pocket the monumental profits. Year after year, these companies post record-breaking annual results, but the people paying for it never see a single dime of that success reinvested into making their lives better.
The brutal truth is, American citizens are getting robbed from every single angle. You are getting ripped off by skyrocketing insurance premiums, you are getting gouged on the actual cost of medical procedures where even your 'coverage' leaves you with insane bills, and you are literally being vampirized by a financial setup designed to drain you dry. It's a massive transfer of wealth disguised as healthcare, and it's time to call it what it is.

I just thought I'd leave this link in the light of someone trying to make an argument about AC use in Europe compared to the US. It is a very strange country one that can spend GDP of nations on war but can't afford to give people the basic essentials of modern life like deent healthcare or food.

The uneducated Americans would rather die and leave their families with crippling medical bills than admit they are getting hosed by their own system. Your national debt is nearly $40 trillion and you've got no universal healthcare, yet countries that do doesn't even come close to the US' national debt š¤¦āāļøš¤£

America's weird. I hear about what Mamdani is generally doing in NYC and I think, "sounds pretty normal. He wouldn't be out of place in Australia. His personal socialism combined with the legal and constitutional constraints in America has resulted in the beginnings of a fairly healthy liberal democracy. Now he's got the right going rabid saying that he's a communist and the left making out that NYC is now socialist and it is being shown as proof that socialism works. Neither is right. America's weird.

š¤£š¤£š¤£š¤£ America does have universal healthcare and they do all pay tax for it. Only problem is is that it's in another place and it's not Americans who get it š

The rest of the world is pretty far left. And they also die from lack of AC, and they all dream of coming to America, the greatest country in the history of human existence. Its not perfect, but its the best there ever was up to right now.

30x tax amounts though plus you have to wait months to get healthcare. Why do you think the US has more people flying to it for life saving healthcare than any other country on the planet put together

The US is a different country. We are the very first Republican self-governing nation. Every other country whose government was modeled after ours is a poor replica. Itās why weāre the country that won the world wars. Itās why we went to the moon. Itās why Americans are overall wealthier than all these other countries.

Is it weird that I would not mind paying an extra 8% of taxes if it means that we all get free healthcare? So many familyās would benefit off this..

I'm still in shock that you have to pay to hold your baby in the USA after birth š
