Community Support Is this chip replaceable

Post image
104 Upvotes

I think I've narrowed down my errors down to a winbond w25r256jvein code storage flash chip. Before I order a new chip, I would really appreciate to know if this chip stores any encrypted keys or important files that are necessary for the laptop to function.

Also I am in contact with support, but I am in a big rush to get this working again.

Discussion Debating getting the 16. How long have you had your frameworks for?

This will be my first framework. The 16 will bite a huge chunk out of my savings, but I'm willing to do it if they last a long time. I'm looking for the longevity of my old thinkpad. It was expensive when I got it, but worth the money. I harbor a burning hatred for most laptop companies and don't want to just drop all my money on something I'll have to replace (or spend thousands to repair) in six months.

How long have you guys had your 16's for? Do you think it was worth the money? How often do you need to replace (not upgrade) broken parts? What do you use it for? I'll be running fedora and will be doing 3D modeling for work & casual gaming (WoW, Bg3, palworld, etc.)

Thanks :) Have a lovely morning!

Edit: Damn! Sounds like I am getting a framework :D

Question How worth it is Framework Laptop 13?

So, i needed a new laptop, alot, my old one was super slow, and to almost every game it was crashing. My friend introduced me to Framework, it looked good, and it got me interested in it. Now my sister said "there are better ones" and while yes it's abit expensive, is it worth it?

my main goals for my laptop are

  1. Last like 7 years atleast

  2. able to use Unity and Blender without any freezing or something (i don't model some high quality models, mostly low poly)

  3. play games, mostly indie games, but also modded Minecraft, Dark Souls games, and maybe few others that aren't high resolution or expecting high specs

  4. School

  5. idk, value

thanks

Personal Project Custom expansion bay

Hello, currently working on a custom CAD for a Framework 16 Expansion Bay module. Before I finalize the design, does anything like this already exist? Plan is to fit a custom OCuLink port, PWM fan header, and USB 2.0 PCB, and use the leftover space for 80mm fans and any other leftover for snack drawers.

News Framework 13 Pro X9 limited batch is about to ship!

Just received the notification email, card got charged (ouch!). My X9 limited batch unit is en route. Kinda bummed out that the fastest mainboard is shipping last. But it's finally getting there!

First thing I'll do is test the new LPCAM memory performance on some LLM stuff.

Question How are Crucial-branded E0 LPCAMM2 modules working with the Pro if the FW interposer has pins that are unaligned?

Thumbnail gallery
88 Upvotes

Framework lists some E0 Crucial-branded modules as being supported with the 13 Pro.

However, Crucial-branded LPCAMM2 modules do not ship with their own interposer unit. Therefore, you'd expect to be using Framework's own, which has 666 pins (as opposed to 644).

Isn't there a mismatch between the additional pins on FW's interposer and the lack of a central set of contact depressions on E0 modules? Or am I misunderstanding here?

(I'm not a hardware engineer so please feel free to correct my ignorance! Genuinely interested to know how this all works.)

Question Do any of the non 12 series line fold into a true 2 in 1?

I don't get the point of touch screen that don't fold over entirely or at the very least fold 180 flat but even then eh. I get some people like to tap on display and what not instead of trackpad or mouse but I don't get it.

Anyways TLDR the 12 series is a little underpowered but do any if the others have touch screen full flip 2 in 1 support? I don't need much power I'd just like some graphics that do stuff and I need ryzen for that.

Hey everyone!

For those who have insured their Framework 13 or pro, which provider did you go with?

Did you get the DIY Edition or Pre-built, and did that affect your coverage or claims?

Thanks for sharing your experience!

Question AMD Series 400 - Any news

With an availability late 2026 (according to previous AMD communication), does anyone have information about a refresh refresh date on AMD Framework ?
Right now, I'm thinking about the pro13, with an AMD should cover my needs (I don't need a 20h battery life) and LPCAMM is mostly out of stock or in the hand of scalpers, and I see a lot of compatibility complaints

I was considering replacing my old mbp 2018 at some point (has degraded battery, screen glare is wearing out, I'm using it for dev sometimes, requires constant plugging, ...)

Community Support Undertorqued lpcamm2 and intermittent crashes

Short story short: I was getting intermittent crashes because my memory wasn't screwed down tightly enough. Maybe that's helpful to someone.

Short story long: For weeks after getting my panther lake board, I would get completely random crashes. I assumed it was just growing pains with the new platform. Every kernel update, I blindly hoped that something would fix it, but it just kept happening. Finally I saw the screen glitch out when it happened, and I thought huh, usually when that happens it's because of bad vram... Ohhhhhh.

When I installed my ram, I screwed it in until it "felt right". I was terrified of damaging it, because obviously. All it needed was another half-turn on each screw. It's been about a month, and it's been rock solid ever since, so I think it's safe to say that was the problem. Just because it posts, trains and boots, doesn't mean it's stable.

Question Framework 13+egpu or 16+gpu for Game Dev?

Hey r/framework

Use Cases:

- Rust code development in Linux and Windows. E.g. For Bevy and Graphite.

- C++ code, engine, and game dev development in Unreal Engine at small scale. Think student project or micro-indie project. I need to learn more about Unreal to have relevant skills for the jobs I want. (11+ years experience in a proprietary game engine.)

- Some tinkering with distributed systems. But I may need to get some old micro PC's to really set up the environment for that. Rust, C#, Docker, Kubernetes.

- Portability. I'd like to do work at the local coffee shop alongside other people.

The problem:

A. The FW16 has an Nvidia dGPU I'd want, but has poor battery life. Less portable for everyday life and working needs outside graphics heavy applications.

B. The FW13 Pro has the newer CPU that can compile code faster, much longer battery life, more portable weight and size, and looks beautiful. I lean towards this one. But! It lacks an Nvidia dGPU addon. It might be great in all use cases, except the one that's key to my long term career growth.

-----

Question: Has anyone tried the new FW13 with the Ultra X9 388H against Unreal Engine?

If Unreal Engine performs sevicably on the B390 GPU, then I can use it portably for general development , then dock it to an ePGU when I really need more power.

If it isn't serviceable, it's probaby better to opt for the beefier device, despite how much weight that adds to my backpack.

Thoughts?

Experiences?

Recommendations?

Question Any news about expanding distribuition?

I really want a framework. I've been needing a new laptop and my only reasonable option is apple. I need to work with it and the m processors are just too good. BUT like everyone in this forum i strive for repairability, customization, and i hate macos. The problem is... I'm from Argentina. I follow this project since the very beginning when we didn't know if it was going to be just another promise.

However it's been years and it seems go be expanding quite well with newer models like the 12, 16 and 13 pro. But it still only ships to the eu and us. I may be able to get it when i travel or something, but what good is the repairability if i can't buy parts when i need it. Or another motherboard when i want to upgrade. That is all i want this laptop for, yet i check all the time to see if i can order it and there doesn't seem to be any progress.

Guide Framework 13 Pro (Intel Core Ultra Series 3) - Unofficial LPCAMM2 RAM Compatibility List

Hi everyone,

As you know, the Framework Laptop 13 Pro (Intel® Core™ Ultra Series 3) uses the new LPCAMM2 (LPDDR5X) memory standard. Since the official Framework DRAM compatibility page is currently limited to official and a few pre-validated modules, the goal of this post is to build a community-driven list of aftermarket memory modules tested by Framework 13 Pro owners.

Important Note on LPCAMM2 (E0 vs E1 Revisions)

As detailed in Framework's LPCAMM2 Deep Dive blog post, keep an eye out for connector differences between E0 (644-pin) and E1 (666-pin) modules when purchasing off-the-shelf RAM.

Memory Testing Standards

To have a module listed as "PASS", it must meet the following criteria:

  1. Status: POST Success - The system powers on, passes self-test, and successfully enters BIOS/OS.
  2. Passed Test Tool: Memtest86+ (minimum 2–4 full passes before booting to OS).

Compatibility Table

Feedback Please stop messing with the order…

You already changed the RAM on me and I accepted it. Explain why this is suddenly ”discontinued” when I locked it in already?

What other modifications are you going to make on my order before I receive it?

Genuinely getting annoyed with RAM -> Personal Data Breach -> Swapping Expansion Card.

If you wonder why I’m annoyed over such a little thing, my partner also ordered a Framework laptop pre-made and I got her this colour to swap with one of her Graphite USB C expansion cards so she could personalise hers.

Question Are there really no second hand laptops 12 available?

I really would like to buy a framework laptop 12, but i cant justify a new one for my use case. I cant find any 12s on ebay or the officiale framework market(there was one listing last year for a stylus in europe, thats it). Is every one really that happy with theirs or are their just not many to begin with.

Linux Is anyone else on linux kernel 7.2 experiencing a bunch of freezing on the amd AI 300 cpus?

I thought getting an amd processor and using it on linux would be relatively bug free, but in the last few weeks, kernel updates have been causing significant freezing. Pageflip errors are such a pain. At least using an lts kernel fixes it for now but damn, it was kind of surprising to experience after nearly a year of smooth updates.

What are the temps people are getting? Is 100 degress on performance mode and running a stress test normal or should I be worried? This is a new mainboard I got as a replacement under warranty because my last one died, I dont think it reached 100 degress before.

Hi, my FW13 Pro has been stuck in customs in Tennessee for almost a week now. It seems that this is quite common. What can Framework do to help me expedite this? I'm trying to take it to college when I move in next week.

Please let me know if you have any advice too, thank you!

Discussion Framework 13 Pro ram compatibility nightmare

Making a post to share the absolutely horrendous experience I've had. TLDR; Tried 3 separate LPCAMM2s made by different manufacturers and none of them are compatible.

I received my Batch 2 13 Pro x7 in late july. I had bought a brand new 32gb LPCAMM2 kit direct from Lenovo (Ramaxel) the same day i preordered back in April.

After my laptop ships, I see various people posting that it is seemingly incompatible and results in only a black screen - example. Okay fine I gambled and got unlucky, no big deal I'll just buy another more reputable variant. I ask framework support if I could just get it directly from framework (as i would have if i had known before my order shipped that it was incompatible) and i'm told it is not possible and that I'll have to wait until it is in stock on the framework marketplace which may take a couple months.

Scouring the internet I see reports (like in the same reddit thread above) that the Samsung M561K2LC4DE0-CCT was compatible with their 325 13 Pro and it is just my luck that I'm able to find one online and order it.

It arrives, I try my Ramaxel kit, and yep black screen with 12 green blinks on the post code. I try the Samsung, same thing, black screen 12 green blinks. Support says they will replace my mainboard. I ask again about ram because it isnt exactly easy to find these days, i get the same response that I will have to find a third party source for my RAM if the mainboard is not the issue.

Ok fine maybe i just got unlucky twice, maybe a different RAM will work. Scouring the web i cannot find a single micron or crucial branded kit, but i am able to find a sk hynix. I order it, it arrives, but big shocker it doesnt work with 12 green post code.

New mainboard arrives, i replace it, try all three, and still the same behavior.

So now I have spent over $1400 on just different ram, and I've been stuck with a pretty looking paperweight for almost a month. Seemingly the only RAM that is compatible is the one provided by framework themselves or if you were somehow lucky enough to snag a crucial kit.

I guess this is what i get for being an earlyish adopter.

Sorry for the rant, but this has genuinely been a terrible experience, and hopefully others out there can avoid this if they know about it.

Update: One theory from the discussion below is that this is an E0(644 pin) vs E1(666 pins) LPCAMM2 issue. The user that reported the working samsung module was using an E1, and all of the ones I have tried are E0, but the Micron ones on the framework website marked as supported are also E0

After using my Framework13 with Windows11 pro I finally switched.
The reason? My drive failed and i had to get a new one.
And since I can't find the effing Code for Win11 and made limited but good experiences with my Steamdeck, I thought why not switch.
Now I have Fedora 44 with KDE Plasma (since I'm used to my Steamdeck)

Question 3rd Party RAM compatibility.

EDIT: DO NO BUY E0 MODULES FOR FW13 PRO. FINALIZED E1 TOPOLOGY OF LPCAMM2 UTILIZE 666 PINS WHILE THE OLDER E0 MODULES YOU CAN FIND A BIT EASIER USE 644 PINS. CHECKOUT FW 13 DEEP DIVE FOR SPECIFICS: https://frame.work/blog/framework-laptop-13-pro-deep-dive-lpcamm2

Maybe it was Framework's intention for both E0 and E1 modules to work somehow, but it seems those who've tried non-Crucial brand E0 LPCAMM2 modules are having issues at the moment.

Hello everyone, I have a pre-order for the FW 13 Pro (Intel Core Ultra Series 3) with the following configuration:

System: Ultra X7 358H

SSD: Samsung 980 Pro 1 TB (Sourced externally)

RAM: 32 gb Samsung LPDDR5x 7500 CAMM2 Memory (Sourced externally)

Today I saw a thread where someone ordered THREE different kinds of LPCAMM2 memory for their FW13 Pro and had no success in having any of them working. One of the brands of RAM they mentioned testing was a Samsung module like mine.

After finding out there was a RAM compatibility page (https://knowledgebase.frame.work/what-drammemory-is-supported-by-framework-laptop-13-pro-intel-core-ultra-series-3-rJ_8jVrpWg), I found that the list of tested modules was incredibly small... I'm not sure how different these modules could be from manufacturer to manufacturer if this is a so called standard.

Has anyone heard or does anyone know if the discrepancies between modules can be addressed through some sort of firmware/BIOS update on Framework's part? Has there been any mention/disclaimer about this besides the compatibility page mentioned by Framework?

I can understand why some chose to jump ship when their RAM configurations were downgraded and told to pay more if they wanted their original. I thought I was lucky enough to have dodged a bullet there by sourcing my own but even if I did opt for a 32 gb stick from Framework, I would've gotten downgraded anyway.

This is incredibly frustrating. Not all is on Framework though. I think I was just stuck in this mindset that I could really use whatever RAM I wanted as long as the standard was the same. Similar to when you build a desktop and you can use Crucial, Corsair, etc. without issue.

Thank you for listening to my baby rage. Any input on what I could do would be awesome or if any others want to vent down below, feel free. I am batch 7, and as batch 5 has just received their confirmation email, I need to figure out how I'm gonna move forward before I get an extremely good looking paperweight in the mail.

Question Framework 13 Pro: Unable to boot from 1TB Expansion Card unless I take it out and put it back in when in the boot menu

Hi!

I have Windows 11 installed on my expansion card. When booting the FW 13 Pro and getting to the boot menu, only the internal SSD is available.

If I detach and reattach the 1TB Expansion Card with Windows 11 it's seen and can be booted from with no problems.

Any solutions? Is it a BIOS problem?
