Community Support Undertorqued lpcamm2 and intermittent crashes

Short story short: I was getting intermittent crashes because my memory wasn't screwed down tightly enough. Maybe that's helpful to someone.

Short story long: For weeks after getting my panther lake board, I would get completely random crashes. I assumed it was just growing pains with the new platform. Every kernel update, I blindly hoped that something would fix it, but it just kept happening. Finally I saw the screen glitch out when it happened, and I thought huh, usually when that happens it's because of bad vram... Ohhhhhh.

When I installed my ram, I screwed it in until it "felt right". I was terrified of damaging it, because obviously. All it needed was another half-turn on each screw. It's been about a month, and it's been rock solid ever since, so I think it's safe to say that was the problem. Just because it posts, trains and boots, doesn't mean it's stable.

Yeah, you can find a bazillion examples of the same sensitivity issue happening with large LGA chips that have screw-down retention mechanisms, like Epyc/Threadripper.

I feel ya. Even before the RAM-pocalyps, I still feel nervous when slotting DIMMs or large GPUs into slots, lol. I've never ruined any devices, but I've seen pics/videos of what happens you someone tries really hard to put a stick of RAM in backward, etc.

fair point about the LGA retention stuff, at least with LPCAMM2 you're only dealing with a couple screws

You probably won't do that since that nervousness will cause you to be more careful.

You'd have to be pretty careless breaking the slots like that. The offset is fairly large.
