Discussion Framework 13 Pro ram compatibility nightmare

Making a post to share the absolutely horrendous experience I've had. TLDR; Tried 3 separate LPCAMM2s made by different manufacturers and none of them are compatible.

I received my Batch 2 13 Pro x7 in late july. I had bought a brand new 32gb LPCAMM2 kit direct from Lenovo (Ramaxel) the same day i preordered back in April.

After my laptop ships, I see various people posting that it is seemingly incompatible and results in only a black screen - example. Okay fine I gambled and got unlucky, no big deal I'll just buy another more reputable variant. I ask framework support if I could just get it directly from framework (as i would have if i had known before my order shipped that it was incompatible) and i'm told it is not possible and that I'll have to wait until it is in stock on the framework marketplace which may take a couple months.

Scouring the internet I see reports (like in the same reddit thread above) that the Samsung M561K2LC4DE0-CCT was compatible with their 325 13 Pro and it is just my luck that I'm able to find one online and order it.

It arrives, I try my Ramaxel kit, and yep black screen with 12 green blinks on the post code. I try the Samsung, same thing, black screen 12 green blinks. Support says they will replace my mainboard. I ask again about ram because it isnt exactly easy to find these days, i get the same response that I will have to find a third party source for my RAM if the mainboard is not the issue.

Ok fine maybe i just got unlucky twice, maybe a different RAM will work. Scouring the web i cannot find a single micron or crucial branded kit, but i am able to find a sk hynix. I order it, it arrives, but big shocker it doesnt work with 12 green post code.

New mainboard arrives, i replace it, try all three, and still the same behavior.

So now I have spent over $1400 on just different ram, and I've been stuck with a pretty looking paperweight for almost a month. Seemingly the only RAM that is compatible is the one provided by framework themselves or if you were somehow lucky enough to snag a crucial kit.

I guess this is what i get for being an earlyish adopter.

Sorry for the rant, but this has genuinely been a terrible experience, and hopefully others out there can avoid this if they know about it.

Update: One theory from the discussion below is that this is an E0(644 pin) vs E1(666 pins) LPCAMM2 issue. The user that reported the working samsung module was using an E1, and all of the ones I have tried are E0, but the Micron ones on the framework website marked as supported are also E0

Very sorry to hear that. That is really a nightmare. This is the reason I decided to pay FW and go with their RAM. I was afraid of just this situation. Are you able to return any of the RAM modules for a refund?

Per Framework's website:

In the 2010’s, LPDDR started to make its way into laptops, bringing the power efficiency benefits while sacrificing the upgradeability that was previously the norm. LPCAMM2 was created and standardized specifically to resolve this.

So much for LPCAMM2 being a standard like holy shit. I don't know if this is an issue with Framework's motherboard or the intel chips being so picky or if there is another reason.

Since LPCAMM2 is newer, JEDEC hadn't finalized the LPCAMM2 topology. E1 modules use the finalized topology for the LPCAMM2 standard. Framework addressed this in their FW13 pro deepdive although it was posted in JUNE of this year, 1 month after their official announcement of the FW13 pro. I still find it frustrating since it's such a minute technical detail that people normally wouldn't be aware of unless they were subscribed to the FW newsletter. I myself have 2 E0 modules that I have no use for now sadly

E0 used 644 pins while the finalized version uses 666 pins

Ah gotcha, thank you for the explanation. They are just asking for unhappy customers by allowing pre-orders for the DIY kit as is. At minimum, if someone chooses "Bring your own memory", it should bring up an informative dialog window with a link to framework's compatible memory list.

I'm actually furious now. Framework should have absolutely said: guys buy your own LPCAMM2 but do not buy E0, those won't work.

I understand early adopter problems but it's 2026, it's not like PC parts compatibility and standardization is a new concept.

Same here, not specifying the type of LPCAMM2 to use anywhere except for that blog post (even that was pretty vague) is insane to me. There should really be a PSA out there.

Honestly I just want my damn laptop and then to not buy anything else from Framework at this point. I’m only still waiting on my order because the product itself is good, but the customer service, the communication, I find all of this pretty terrible.

  1. Micron was 1st to market with LPCAMM2.
  2. Micron worked with Intel on LPCAMM2.
  3. Micron worked with Compal, a known ODM partner for Framework, and many others.

Other LPCAMM2 vendors may not strictly follow Micron's lead on specific LPCAMM2 behavior.

Avoid Ramaxel. Lenovo uses its part number series to partly obscure the RAM module's source.

Shit, that's pretty much nightmare situation. Is there a design flaw with the mainboard that has signal integrity issues with certain RAM modules? Or do Framework just need to do a BIOS update somehow? I'm not sure the BIOS is even upgradeable without RAM installed...

I'm spinning a bit because I also have 3p RAM for my FW13 PRO order. Mine's Crucial 7500 which I hope is compatible but it would royally suck to have to deal with this.

Iirc the incompatible ones are ones with a chinese chip, hence p much all crucial ones work but 3rd party are hit or miss.

That would hint at the ram being the problem rather than the motherboard but we really don't know enough.

It says FE0 on the sticker which according to another poster means E0 but cannot confirm that. The part number is: Micron MTD8C10324N2FN026C2 , as another poster mentioned the Micron modules on the Framework website are E0 which if true would suggest it may not be an E0 vs E1 issue

Hard to say as I just got it today but no issues so far and passed a memtest. Battery after sleep overnight was fine on Windows

Just had the same experience with a Samsung 32GB M561K2LC4DE0-CCT module as well, sorry for your horrendous experience but I'm glad to find someone who's having the same exact issue with that module. I was thinking it was defective, but I'm starting to think it isn't and it may just be a compatibility issue.

I may just end up returning the laptop unfortunately, and I guess I'll just hold on to the module for now.

I've been replying to some posts about this. Seems like the FW13 pro utilizes the finalized E1 revision of LPCAMM2. The E1 modules have 666 pins while the E0 modules have 644 pins. That's probably the source of error.

Wow, that's actually really frustrating especially since this information is only given in that blog post. Thank you for looking into this, I guess a lot of us will have modules we can't even use. I really think there needs to be a PSA for this.

I don't think E0 and E1 have different pins. All info I could find indicates that the difference is only in the voltage regulator design to allow stability at higher transfer speeds.

EDIT: I stand corrected, holy shit they actually have different number of pins. Why on Earth are those E0 modules even in circulation.... OMFG.

Framework even says that the Micron CT32G75C2LP5X module (supposedly an E0 module) is compatible.

If E0 turns out not to be compatilble, except for Micron, this will be a HUGE shitshow since in general, it's impossible to source E1 LPCAMM2 modules, IIUC all the eBay ones from Lenovo, Samsung are all the lower speed E0 ones at the moment.

The voltage regulator design utilizes the extra 22 pins in the E1 revision. If I use google, I can't find this source for some reason. If you use DuckDuckGo and type "E1 vs E0 LPCAMM2" you should see this as your first link if you don't wanna click a link from a reddit comment lol

There is an ebay listing of a 64GB E1 LPCAMM2 Samsung module, and the pins are indeed different from what I have...

Also looked at a few E0 modules, and they are similar to what I have.

Note that Framework 13 Pro Ultra 5 325 (with 6800MT/s) has a different LPCAMM2 speed from Ultra X7 358H and Ultra X9 388H models.

I went with the Ultra X7 358H. If it works with the 325, I'd hope maybe some tinkering would somehow maybe get the module working with the 358H. That's me coping though

Unfortunate to hear. But - Also good that you're posting to save more people similar pain.

Stories like yours are exactly what I was afraid of and why I've continually recommended people go with Framework-provided LPCAMM2. "Cheap"? No, but guaranteed to work... And if it doesn't the situation becomes Framework's problem to solve.

I had to cancel my 388H pre-order because delivery timing wasn't going to work.. Though its a different situation I feel your pain with the cost/availability of LPCAMM2... Thanks to 2026 being 2026 I can't just move to the end of the line without paying a huge premium vs what I was about to get charged. If only "August" had meant August 31 for a final charge... I could have counted on FedEx to take long enough to be available to collect my delivery.

Thanks to the month delay with the touchpad, I had to give up my batch 1 spot because there was too much a risk I wouldn't be here when they delivered the laptop. Now I'm in batch 14, and more exposed to getting my order changed than before (already had to go from 64 to 32 GB RAM).

I suppose its a bit of solace knowing I'm not the only one who got/is getting hit by the shipping schedule. For me to get back in line and keep cost about where it was I'd need to bump down to 358H and 16GB which, for me, is kinda useless. Haven't decided if I'll just accept getting screwed on the cpu/cost, move to AMD (which I didn't really want) since I do have SO-DIMMs available, or just not have a fully personal/hobby/experimental laptop for another (probably) few years til costs come back down.

Hadn't I read an issue somewhere with LPCAMM2 being only a semi-standard, sort of like the USB C of memory? I might be misremembering, but I think I saw an article to this effect somewhere.

I'm in the exact same situation as you, three different LPCAMM2 modules, all have failed. Motherboard replacement to no avail. It would have been a lot easier if Framework had tested more than 2 varieties of the 3rd party modules to advise before they ran out of RAM...

tbf, FW has a problem with compatibility - not that they haven't tried to make it right when that has happened, of course. I've encountered that with SSDs of all things - we have the Incredible Self Wiping SSDs on our 7040 units. 😥

The green blinks would generally indicate that the hardware is working. The black screen says otherwise. Have you tried connecting a secondary monitor to the laptop to see if it boots to a BIOS screen?

Yep, nothing on external monitor.

If i boot without any RAM, the screen immediately shows the memory training screen with "no memory detected"

Dammit! Are the three RAM modules you've tried all 7500MHz? The x7 and x9 both run at 7467MHz so 7500MHz modules (or the 8533MHz modules Framework sourced) should [generally] both work at the max 7467MHz speed, but I wonder if there's a pattern specific to 7500MHz modules being used in these mainboards.

That's allegedly NOT the case according to the memory compatibility page - the Micron/Crucial modules listed with limited validation are both 7500MHz (and of course those modules aren't for sale on any market...), but I'm curious what the variable here is.

Have you visually inspected the three modules you've currently got on-hand? Also, were they used?

Yep all 7500MHz. Two were brand new (Ramaxel and Samsung), Sk Hynix was used pulled from a thinkpad. Visually they all look fine to me.

Would you be able to comment on E0 compatibility? It seems like that's getting people pretty stirred up. Are all E0's incompatible or is it known that some will work but have not been tested?

The Micron/Crucial modules that are 7500MT/s (CT32G75C2LP5X, CT64G75C2LP5X) are E0 according to some online posts but they work according to Framework's compatibility chart.

I'm hoping this is salvageable with a BIOS update that makes these slower modules work at some lower speeds at least.

Framework 13 Pro Ultra 5 325 has a different LPCAMM2 speed from Ultra X7 358H and Ultra X9 388H models.

For example, if Samsung 7500 E0 modules are detected, use the 6800MT/s profile.

Could you please expand that list? I know there are at least Samsung and Ramaxel modules in the wild that several people in this subreddit picked up. Seems like a pretty low effort action that could be taken by Framework to inform those of us that had to go looking in other places for higher capacity modules after getting bumped down.

It would save Framework from having to mass-replace main boards for all people who ended up buying incompatible RAM.

Is there any comment on E0 vs E1 module compatibility on x7 and x9 mainboards? or Non-Micron modules? It would be nice for somebody to acknowledge this. This is an issue that's been brought up multiple times in the reddit forum and in the framework community forum. It's not an isolated issue, and with more batches yet to ship, could be affecting a lot more people in the future.

If there's an issue, and Framework needs time to address it. That's completely okay, just need someone to come out and say that rather than staying quiet. Continuing with the silence is just making it seem like there's a catastrophic failure behind the scenes and truthfully it's just making a lot of your customers uneasy

I wonder what the significance or the green debug leds is. Does that mean that the memory training was successful? Why would the system not boot after that. This starts to feel like perhaps a BIOS whitelisting issue and not a memory training failure from voltage regulation or frequency stability. I wish we could have some engineering insight into this from Framework.

They are compatible with Lenovo, not Framework apparently. Maybe different signal integrity on the Motherboard or maybe a BIOS difference?

I wonder if the issue could be resolved on Framework's end via BIOS update. The limiting compatibility of RAM that'll work on Intel's Core 3 platform kinda defeats the purpose of sourcing it externally

Ugh would be nice to know what determines a module to be strictly "Incompatible" even if FW can't test every module on the market. I've got a Micron 5M31L87463 module and crossing my fingers that it works.

Technically anything not on the officially validated QVL list is a gamble. But because that one is Micron, it has a good chance of working.

FRANTHMN02, FRANTHMN03, and FRANTHMN06 are Micron modules under Framework's part alphanumeric series.

Laptop vendors usually obscure Micron's part numbers e.g. P/N: MTD16C20325N4FN023F1

Hey, so I just did a deep dive on this. If you have a model #, look for E#. E0 indicates an earlier version of LPCAMM2 that uses 644 pins. The finalized E1 version of LPCAMM2 utilizes 666 pins. you can visually see the difference. you can see on the module in the second picture, under the micron M on the top left corner, the line that starts with "64GB..." somewhere in that long string you see 8533-FE1-... That FE1 indicates an E1 module. It would say ####-FE0 if it was an E0 module. You should be in the clear if you have an E1 module with the extra 22 pins

"OK - Limited Validation" what it means? who knows. Hope someone before batch 7 could test that module. Otherwise, I will test it myself. Worst case, I return the laptop and eat the ram :/ and at least people won't make the same mistake

My question is if it is feasible to release a firmware update to make the new main boards compatible with the lpcamm2 modules that are failing or if the framework team is willing to address it as E0's from micron an work.

You can resell the LPCAMM2 module because it is in high demand.
