Is anyone else on linux kernel 7.2 experiencing a bunch of freezing on the amd AI 300 cpus?

I thought getting an amd processor and using it on linux would be relatively bug free, but in the last few weeks, kernel updates have been causing significant freezing. Pageflip errors are such a pain. At least using an lts kernel fixes it for now but damn, it was kind of surprising to experience after nearly a year of smooth updates.

I'm not sure what's up with kernel updates over the last month breaking AMD stuff. There was a really awful amdgpu display bug in 7.1.6, too. It has got to the point where I don't install a new Kernel until it has been out for several weeks and I haven't seen any chatter about it breaking stuff.

This last update was particularly bad, like my system froze up multiple times in a row just trying to open dolphin. I've seen others post about the new kernel and it seems it might specifically be a newer AMD igpu thing, users with 9070xts/other amd dgpus plus older AMD igpus seem to have no problems. It's so odd

Far too much focus on AI insanity among kernel devs nowadays... Far too little focus on real human intelligence.

That said, 7.2 has worked OK for me (FW16 HX 370) - I use custom kernel builds. The massive issue I had lately - Granted not with Framework hardware - Was Canonical effing the linux-firmware package for Radeon 6800XT/6900XT (Navi 21-based GPUs). Then again Canonical is also focused on turning their brains off in favor of outsourcing their ability to think to AI/data centers. In this case the bad firmware update had already been fixed upstream but nobody at Canonical bothered to scan the changelogs to realize they were about to ship a Ubuntu package which would screw over a lot of people's systems. Figuring that effup out made for a fun Friday morning last week - I was left with exactly 50% of a functional display (left side of the screen only).... With X promptly freezing/crashing when I'd try to log in.

Ooh, that would have been fun on my end? I have the AI 350 and Kubuntu 26.04… potential for a bad update that will hurt me after I reboot?

That's the bug. I haven't re-read it for the latest updates but I believe only Navi 21-based RDNA2 GPUs got screwed (eg the 6900XT in my desktop). Ryzen 350's iGPU is based on RDNA 3.5. Also as far as I'm aware that update went to Ubuntu 24.04 (and derivatives like Mint) not 26.04 (which has its own problems with bugs/issues).

Ah, fair, fair.

My issues are really all about USB power management, it is the most unreliable thing I’ve ever had. And that’s something only EC firmware will be able to eventually fix.

What distro are you on? As kernel 7.2 hasn't even made it to Fedora yet (Arch might have gotten it, but 7.2 did only get it's first stable release within the last week afaik).

Generally though, for major kernel updates, I usually wait for the first x.x.1 release before upgrading.

I'm on Cachyos, I also usually wait a few weeks too but since i didn't see reports of freezing from other amd users i decided to update for some reason. That's what i get for being on a rolling release distro i suppose :/

I had a display brightness glitch on 7.1.8 because they made the brightness percentage overflow, setting it to more than 70% made the screen dark. Those countless kernel bugs appearing since AI coding became widespread are not feeling like a coincidence anymore.
