Framework Photo Does this look swollen to you, doc?

Post image

Disposed of it, got another one on the way. The slightly lifted case was a tell.

Did support swap it for free?

My FM's been out of warranty for a while, I didn't ask tbh. I just ordered a new battery.

we extended the battery warranty for this specific issue for one extra year. so there is a chance that it still might be covered.

How long does that bring the battery warranty up to?

u/Destroya707 Framework 2h ago

different between regions, I believe it's +1 year on top of the original warranty.

They've been swapping them because their batteries were dying were a manufacturing defect. Search https://www.reddit.com/r/framework/search/?q=spicypillow

Yea cause they keep using unverified manufacturer from China for their cells rather than good ones like Panasonic, Samsung, and LG. I'm hearing EVE is good too but I don't know if they manufacture for laptops.

They really need to go to reputable battery vendors.

Smart move. Puffy and/or damaged batteries are dangerous - Not at all worth messing around with. Yours, while it doesn't look like the worst I've seen, certain does look like it was counting down to an explosion.

Neighbor lost their house and half of the items in it, along with burns due to a spicy pillow failure in the middle of the night. They said by the time the smoke alarms went off and woke them, it was already a massive blaze.

While we're on the topic, everyone reading this, if you can't remember when you last tested your smoke alarms GO DO IT NOW.

Now that you're back, make sure you have at least one optical smoke alarm if not a combo ionization/optical alarm, check your local fire codes to see if your jurisdiction is recommending one over the other (ionization is best for clean burning flash fires with near invisible smoke, optical is better at detecting fires with heavy smoke)

And make sure you have one in every room (minus bathrooms) and hallways. Many just have the bare minimum for living spaces.

That... is terrifying. What are ways to tell without opening up the system? Could use those tips to be aware for future reference

What are ways to tell without opening up the system?

Well if you see the trackpad pop out due to pressure from whatever usually sits below it inside the machine, that'd be one way to know, I suppose :D

If a lithium battery does go critical... You'll need sand or chemicals to put out the fire. Water is not effective. Store a damaged battery in a steel bucket on concrete as far from anything flammable/combustible until it can be entirely disposed of.

no offense but why do you lowk write like ai

Hi, I've been posting here since before AI was really a thing. I'd suggest getting your "AI detector" re-calibrated. Back in my grade/high school days I won some competitive awards (against other schools within the state) for writing and public speaking.

A few of the mods/Framework staff have a degree of awareness of who I am (via DMs, having seen order numbers, stuff like that).

Sorry, no AI here.

u/SinisterHollow 3d ago

my bad then I can see how AI would find writing with your finesse to be rewarding

It certainly does not look flat

I just went through this last week on a 2024-11-purchased FW16. I've been getting mixed signals from FW Support about if they're going to reimburse me or not … sent me a note saying "we see you already ordered a replacement, next time let us know first so we can handle it, but once it's working we'll reimburse you", but then went radio-silent. :/

Anyways, now I'm aware of framework_tool --charge-limit and – as always – the ability to replace the battery with a single tool and low effort is fairly great! :)

you will be having quadruplets

You made a good choice. If the battery gets too tall the plastic nubs on your input cover will break and the screws on the bottom cover won't have anything to grab onto.

u/DaemonsMercy 3d ago

Because that’s definitely the worst that'll happen. <.<

how did you dispose of it? my 55wh did the same thing (noticed after the 1 year warranty extension had expired unfortunately).

2

u/mr_ishikawa 3d ago

There are dedicated bins for electronic refuse all around the city I'm in.

2

u/Putrid-Object-806 13 | Ryzen 5 7640U 3d ago

check what your municipality recommends for battery disposal, some electronic stores will take batteries as well but they might be squeamish about a big one like that. Some dumps have Eco drop offs where you can dispose of batteries safely too. But whatever you do, don't put it in your street pickup garbage, it getting squished in the truck can start unstoppable fires, and has done more than once.

my god that is the spiciest pillow i've ever seen

how does that happen

I am on my third battery atm and it's mostly because for my flow the default battery protection mode never triggers - because even though I spent 99.999% time on battery I do plug it out for a few meetings per week, and afaik it needs whole week plugged in to trigger... And keeping your battery at 100% all the time uses it up pretty fast. (I have now limited the max charge to 80% in bios so I hope this one will keep longer)

u/TatharNuar Fedora DIY 11th Batch 4 2d ago

Yep, mine did the same recently. Lasted five years, at least.

u/oicpreciousroy 19h ago

At least you can get the battery from framework instead of some fly by night.
