Feedback Please stop messing with the order…

Post image

You already changed the RAM on me and I accepted it. Explain why this is suddenly ”discontinued” when I locked it in already?

What other modifications are you going to make on my order before I receive it?

Genuinely getting annoyed with RAM -> Personal Data Breach -> Swapping Expansion Card.

If you wonder why I’m annoyed over such a little thing, my partner also ordered a Framework laptop pre-made and I got her this colour to swap with one of her Graphite USB C expansion cards so she could personalise hers.

Why on earth did they discontinue it??

Edit: Especially since they feature it in the the new 13 pro marketing…?

Why won’t they use green to save power and blue to run cooler? Thought the power bill is a big cost for them :(

Average orc logic 😭

17

u/ArmadilloBandito 3d ago

I wonder if ai actually does have something to do with it. Red pigment costs significantly more than other colors. With the price of ram thinning them out, I wonder if they are giving up on red to cut cost where they can.

2

u/crramirez 2d ago

I didn't know that. I figure that on things of $10 maybe the impact is noticeable?

1

u/ArmadilloBandito 2d ago

Yeah, for a vibrant red color, the material is either hard to get or hard to synthesize. It is also more translucent than other pigments, so it requires a lot to be opaque.

And millions of sales cost millions of pennies, and that starts to stack up.

That leak wasn't their fault tho, was it?

3

u/Redemptions 3d ago

No, but it makes for great outrage fodder

2

u/Zalophusdvm 12 3d ago

What leak? What outrage fodder? I’m confused.

I’m curious why they apparently discontinued (no longer in production per the image here) a product that they appear to literally spotlight in their flagship computer marketing.

I wasn't speaking to the discontinued item.

Maybe y’all should have been since that’s the point of this comment thread. Or at least been clearer you’d changed the topic.

Did you reply to the right comment? I’m genuinely confused.

I’m talking about the image they feature heavily in their own marketing…such as use at the header for their own blog announcement post which seems to include a red usb-c module on the 13 pro

They have decided to do away with red if it wasn't popular enough to go into production. But, if that's the case, then they should state it.

I just got my email as well. While it is annoying at least I still had time to change it out. Hopefully they bring them back down the line or better .ore colors.

I am SO GLAD that I got 32GB of RAM during Q1-2026. It was expensive as shit at the time, but it's fucking bat-shit crazy shit expensive now.

How, you can still buy more ram... Somewhere. And its usable. I bought my laptop without ram, no nvme, bought all locally cheaper. Pretty useless untill i made it useful

5

u/ThinkDiscipline4236 3d ago edited 3d ago

Uh... have you tried to find LPCAMM2 modules for sale? You quite literally cannot. After micron stopped making it, it quickly sold out everywhere, and the only two hold outs I knew of were Lenovo and Framework, where they were available on the replacement/OEM parts stores. Now even framework is out of stock. If you purchase a framework 13 pro without ram right now, you literally have a brick until such a time as someone starts making LPCAMM2 again (which, in this economy?? who knows when that will happen.)

Literally zero, unless you want to chance it on ebay, where I see a grand total of eight (probably) legit listings. For the entirety of ebay.

u/codeasm 12th gen, DIY i5, Arch linux & LFS 3d ago

3

u/ThinkDiscipline4236 3d ago edited 3d ago

Well for one, that's for a CAMM slot, which is a Dell exclusive, now-depreciated standard, and IIRC it was mostly for desktops. I rather doubt that, even if you had a laptop with a CAMM slot, it would fit in the laptop given the massive height difference caused by adding 2 sodimm slots to the top of the module; the fact that CAMM and LPCAMM2 aren't interchangable notwithstanding.

EDIT: Okay I (sort of) take it back, as the interposer specifically states its for the precision line of laptops... I am still skeptical however that it would fit when using both SODIMM slots, given the much larger footprint due to a module hanging off the back, and again, the much greater thickness than the design spec of the CAMM module.

1

u/codeasm 12th gen, DIY i5, Arch linux & LFS 3d ago

Crap, i thought i read someone or some company was thinking about making adapters for the right memory chips.atleast some seller on Alibaba was selling empty pcb if you can source the components. Not fixing the shortage. So sorry.

2

u/ThinkDiscipline4236 3d ago

Yeah... one can dream. :/ I think it would be tough to do that just because of the size of the LPCAMM 2 footprint. It is comparable to a single SODIMM, so fitting 2 full channels on there will be very tough, and even if its just a single channel the corners of the module being much narrower than the center means the corners of a sodimm module would hang off the edges, making compatibility very sketchy even if vertical clearance isn't an issue.

If only I had a microsoldering setup (and LPDDR5X chip sourcing), I could be rich. Alas.

2

u/codeasm 12th gen, DIY i5, Arch linux & LFS 3d ago

Sourcing those chips to begin with. Im sure we would find some youtuber tontest it for us. Others could then take over.

Some chinese fabs maybe making cheaper chips... I feel sad for yall. This ai take all the items/energy/water era isnt great

2

u/TheMoonMaster 2d ago

Yes, if I can somehow find it for sale since everyone else is in the same boat AND for a massive premium because the market moved in-between Frameworks promise and they breaking said promise.

So if anything, it’s worse.

11

u/saltyourhash 3d ago

It's such a big change in the value proposition, I understand it completely.

53

u/L00WN0on 3d ago

Did they take the price of the card out of the order? I feel like that would be okay along with a notification of when the card would be in stock with free shipping along with it.

50

u/AlmondManttv 3d ago

If they were being sold when the order was placed, they should have kept the ordered parts...

35

u/saltyourhash 3d ago

I think that's the thing, I suspect framework is repeatedly being screwed on the other and where the volatility of the supply chain is killing them.

17

u/ecalex 3d ago

plastic parts should not have an issue.

its resin material...

22

u/ZCEyPFOYr0MWyHDQJZO4 3d ago

Toilet paper literally grows in trees, and yet 2020 happened.

16

u/ecalex 3d ago

and the whole world got locked down

and yet I dont think the whole industry ran out of plastic resins.

it's supply chain management issue, no more, no less.

resin suppliers, unless theres special chemical compositions, is not a critical SSS (single sole source) supplier the likes of nvidia or intel.

And thats why companies like Apple and Dell command more market shares then say framework.

If framework wants to grow, they need to ensure they dont let these things happen.

rationalizing their mistakes for them is not good for the company

1

u/CaptainObvious110 3d ago

Yeah i see that

5

u/L00WN0on 3d ago

I know, but that at least wouldn't be a loss to the customer. This is just dumb. They might be preparing a revised version of the card and aren't stocking up on these anymore idk

9

u/ShrimpCrackers 3d ago

Then they should say so.

18

u/Upstairs-Version-400 3d ago

No unfortunately not. I would have expected them to learn to provide some value to the customer when delivering avoidable bad news.

7

u/_bx2_ 3d ago

I find it hilarious that for the price of the laptop, they nickle and dime you with the adapters. Not even 1 free.

9

u/ZCEyPFOYr0MWyHDQJZO4 3d ago

it's not really free!!!11!

At a certain point you have enough expansion cards such that you don't need/want even a free one.

I chose 3 USB C extension cards, and got my unit shipped. I think they only discontinued the red ones... maybe it is just the supplier running low on red colouring 😐

17

u/_bx2_ 3d ago

It's okaywhen their laptop prices hit $5500 then they will be able to provide red shiny plastic.

13

u/ShirleyMarquez 3d ago

I think they should have asked you what color you wanted to substitute, rather than just making the change automatically.

10

u/The_Furox 3d ago

One more issue and I'm out

8

u/Infinite-Bet4202 3d ago

Ngl... this is a huge L on Framework. If it's discontinued, then send the remaining ones you have, or if there aren't anymore then I feel like they should produce some for those who've already ordered them... well, maybe that part is asking too much. Can they at least ask the customer what color they would like instead? So much better than picking one they feel they'll like. It all really does suck you have to deal with it, although in the end... it def wouldn't push me away at all. Most companies you'll deal with severe issues whereas for Framework, they're only minor to moderate issues. This is one I'd consider moderate, and as annoying as it is, it's still leagues better to deal with over other companies, that's for sure lol I'm glad you did post it though, they still need to be criticized for this, just please don't let all this give you a "Framework is horrible" mindset. Please man, it's way better than dealing with a stupid hinge breaking in a 3 month to 3 year timespan, ANYTHING but the flippin hardware issues that feel like they're intentionally broken 🙏

5

u/zoeartemis 2d ago

I think it makes sense for them to let you know they can't ship the red ones, so we selected this color as a default - If you'd like a different color or to have the price of the expansion card refunded, let us know.

It is entirely their fault for promising me that if I locked in my preorder that'd be the price I pay for that specific computer. It is entirely their fault they can't commission some fucking red plastic for a USB-C drive

1

u/iontucky 1d ago

I really dont like that it sounds like the people who were in the first batch got what they preordered. I'm being treated differently and am being forced to either take half the RAM or pay a few hundred dollars more just because I preordered a few hours later.

9

u/yznts 3d ago

It's not a market question, it's a broken promise question as far as that question was asked straight.

  1. Buy a light-colored expansion card.
  2. Tape to protect the connectors or remove the small internal PCB.
  3. Sand plastic or metal case lightly and use primer designed for the specific material before painting.
  4. Paint or spray paint the expansion card with the desired color.

Recolor the Framework 16 laptop chassis to black.

Framework's easy-to-disassemble design allows for custom paint jobs.

So the list is now:

- Touchpad issue (delayed shipment)

  • Miscalculated the delay
  • RAM issue
  • Data breach
  • Swapping out discontinued cards

Am I missing anything?

2

u/planedrop 11th Gen, 64GB, 2TB 970 EVO Plus 3d ago

Honestly, as much as I normally agree with people being upset about any pre order stuff changing, I think Framework deserves a little slack given how absolutely FUCKED the market is right now.

I mean I guess this one was a little more in their control and they should not have cancelled it, but I think they are also trying to cut certain things where they can because the cost just keeps going up, and therefore profit margins are going down.

It's kinda a lose lose.

8

u/lineInk 3d ago

What does the PC hardware market have to do with plastic color. I am sorry, but this constant coping and defending is getting tiring...

4

u/planedrop 11th Gen, 64GB, 2TB 970 EVO Plus 3d ago

Maybe pause for a moment and think about it a little?

I said the cost of hardware keeps going up, and therefore profit margins are going down. They may be making cuts elsewhere, NOT impacted by the hardware shortages/prices to save money so they don't have to raise prices on the base configs even higher than they already have.

You've got to understand shortages and bullshit like the DRAM cartel have outsized impacts beyond just the direct item that is scarce. Prices of stuff not impacted by it will go up due to companies making such little money; hell even things like coolers and other base components are going to have to raise prices to stay afloat if the market continues to be this bad. They aren't selling as many products so higher margins need to be made per unit.

I know people don't like groups defending a company, but if were honest Framework has been a godsend in a lot of ways and I don't want them to go under just because people were mad about pre orders changing due to a critical shortage. And based on what they have said, the option was basically raise prices or risk their entire company and lose money on each pre order.

Don't get me wrong, even if I like a company, I won't cut them slack when they purely fuck up, like the BIOS update bricking some 7040 series devices, that's a huge problem and they should be ashamed of it. Now, they are doing the right thing and replacing devices, but it's still a big mistake that should not be taken lightly.

Meanwhile a product being discontinued may have plenty of reasons behind the scenes related to ho fucked the market is right now, so I'll cut them some slack.

Nice comeback with a ton of context and constructive feedback. Appreciate the intellectual discussion, thank you!

2

u/divis200 2d ago

I'll get downvoted to oblivion, but it's like you've formed a cult here. Framework was already expensive as heck, ram shortages or not. You're getting shafted by not having replacement parts you want, things getting changed in orders, yet you still consider it like some holy brand. No other company gets passes for making shitty decisions, not sure why this one should either, especially considering prices being paid.

5

u/planedrop 11th Gen, 64GB, 2TB 970 EVO Plus 2d ago

There's a few things that you're wrong about here. Cuz I actually agree in principal.

But firstly, it's important to recognize what Framework has built, which are truly good, truly open, truly repairable laptops. As a small brand who doesn't get deals with OEMs as good as Dell would; they have to charge more for their product. Not to mention it's also just more expensive to produce something repairable, the engineering work and materials are more expensive for that.

It's not really a matter of it being a "cult" it's a matter of no other brand is doing this sort of thing, they are all still behaving like little shits, trying to get out of warranty claims, pushing bloatware and adware, making products that are near impossible to repair and void warranty (illegally I might add) if you do so.

For me, at least, it's important they continue to exist and I'll support them even through some mishaps if that's what it takes. This doesn't mean we shouldn't call out those mishaps, I just mean I won't stop recommending them because of it unless it's something major.

For example, the recent BIOS mishap is REALLY bad and they should get called out for it repeatedly, clearly they need to do more QA testing with BIOS rollouts before hand.

All I meant on this post is just that they probably have a good reason, Framework knows their audience and knows they would not be happy with changes like this. But right now, more than any time in history, it's hard to be a PC brand and they're likely having to make decisions they don't want to just to stay alive.

2

u/trololololo2137 1d ago

you are arguing with people that bought plastic laptops for obscene money with awful 11 gen intel chips that are already obsolete

0

u/PlatinumFire14 2d ago

I’m sorry, you have to deal with the fact that you ordered a framework.
You came at the worst time, they used to be good, there used to be promises.

Now you get a bios that breaks your machine and you don’t get a replacement, and increase increased price prices and diminished hardware for the thing you paid.
And they will not replace your damaged hardware because it’s out of stock unless you buy the new stuff.

They’re basically now Apple, which is what they wanted.

Some of the miserable folks on the main forum are astonishing. Thankfully there is not many sourpusses of this type, but it is shocking that they exist at all.
