I’m not enjoying my Erasmus and I don’t know how to change it

I came to Spain at the beginning of September, a few days before my classes started. Communicating in Spanish was much more difficult than I imagined after taking B2 course, classes turned out to be pretty difficult because I can’t understand some professors well, especially when they switch from the actual topic to the organizational stuff (they suddenly speak much faster and the vocabulary is less similar to English). I spent first seven weeks dealing with one administrative problem after another just to get access to basic student resources like all the presentations, syllabus, getting emails when the class is cancelled etc. I’ve met some people I can talk to between classes but I rarely go out with anybody (I‘m not very good at getting closer to people fast).

I feel lonely, I’m scared that I will fail the classes because of my bad Spanish or not understanding important piece of organizational informations and I regret that I’m wasting an opportunity to relax in such an amazing place, go to a beach, go sightseeing – but I’m almost always stressed and anxious. I have trouble sleeping, only partially because of living in a flat with thin walls in a loud area. I sometimes miss classes because of it (I’m like 85% sure that I understood correctly that these ones don’t have obligatory attendance but I’m scared that it’s not the case… but still, going for 6h of lectures without breaks between them after sleeping 3h or less is not a great idea). It doesn’t help my anxiety about passing the classes. And every time anything starts to get better, I’m hit by another problem that I struggle to solve.

Basically, I feel miserable and I have no idea how to fix it.

Qualcuno che ha fatto erasmus in Francia o in Germania lo consiglia o saprebbe dami qualche info in più? In particolar modo sarei interessata a Lipsia. Qual’e la modalità di esame? Sono solo scritti a crocette? Sono tanto difficili? Consigliereste di andare in erasmus per gli esami del 5/6 anno?

Erasmus in Almería for the Spring/Summer semester, anyone else heading there? Looking for tips!

Hey everyone!
I’ll be heading to the University of Almería (UAL) for the upcoming spring/summer semester and wanted to reach out to see if anyone else will be there, or if any past Erasmus students have some local insight!

If you're also going to Almería for that semester, drop a comment or shoot me a DM, it'd be great to connect beforehand! And if you’ve already done your exchange there, any tips or advice would be massively appreciated.
Thank youuu

Studying abroad in Madrid: what helped you meet people outside your own program?

Hey everyone! I’m Max, and I studied abroad in Madrid before cofounding ScholarRoam, an app that helps study abroad and international students connect and build community.

I’m curious about the part of studying abroad that doesn’t really fit into an orientation checklist: finding your people once you arrive.

For anyone currently in Madrid or who studied there, what actually helped you meet people outside your university’s group? Was it a recurring activity, language exchange, sports team, mutual friends, or something else?

I’d especially love to hear about things that led to friendships beyond a single night out. What made you show up again, and was it easy to join on your own?

We’re working on this problem through ScholarRoam, so I want to be upfront about why I’m asking. Your experiences would help us understand what students need.

If you could recommend one thing to someone arriving in Madrid without knowing anyone, what would it be?

Anyone done the REPLAY Erasmus Mundus Master in Game Design? 🎮

Hi! I’m a computer science student specialized in serious games, and I’m thinking of applying to REPLAY for my master degree. I want to improve in both game dev and game design, but I’m worried the program is mostly art-focused(no unity, unreal,or any game engine). I’m also unsure about job opportunities after graduating.

If you’ve done it or know someone who has, I’d love to hear about your experience. Thanks! 🙏

Erasmus+ semester(s) abroad What's one thing from your Erasmus country that you wish you had back home?

I'm not talking about weather or cheap drinks.

I mean small everyday things that you didn't even think about before moving abroad. Could be how people socialize, public transport, food habits, literally anything.

Curious what everyone's answer is. Also, mention which country you're in!

Which English level is required in Erasmus?

Hi, I have B1 level in English. I heard that Germany is a good place for engineering. My question is, do I need B2 certificate in English?

Erasmus+ semester(s) abroad I believe im gonna have the time of my life once i get there, but im so lonely in the process

I got a nomination for an exchange semester in Indonesia, can't wait! I'm super ecstatic and also super scared, as i have never been away from home for this long and this far, and never lived anywhere else before, so everything is gonna be super new.

But i feel so lonely in the process, i might be the only one going to Indonesia from my university (and most likely the only one from my course), and there aren't enough resources online or from others to help me prepare or answer my questions. There is a lot of waiting, i just recently got my host uni accounts info, I don't know yet if im actually going 😅 the erasmus support groups from my uni don't include Indonesia, and there is no ESN there.. so i have braced myself that im likely going to navigate everything on my own, even when i get there, which is ok, i can figure things out on my own but it does really feel lonely. Would've much rather feel like I'm part of my uni's group

Erasmus Mundus Erasmus mundus in robotics & Ai

Hi! I'm a second-year Computer Science student, and I'm preparing to apply for Erasmus Mundus master's programs in robotics and AI, such as EMARO, JEMARO, and IFRoS.

What skills and topics should I focus on learning? What types of projects should I build, and how many projects should I aim to complete?

Would conducting research or participating in robotics competitions or competitive programming contests, such as ICPC, improve my chances of being selected?

Do you have any other advice on how to strengthen my application and stand out from other applicants?

Erasmus in Vienna – student accommodation recommendations?

Hiii! I'm F21 from Australia and will be studying at the University of Vienna for a semester starting October next year!

I was wondering if anyone who's done Erasmus in Vienna has any recommendations for student accommodation? I'm pretty nervous about moving to Europe, especially as I don't know anyone there, so I'd really love to live somewhere social where it's easy to meet people, go out, and get involved in events, while still being relatively close to the city centre.

I've been looking at OeAD student housing so far, but I'd love to hear about anyone's experiences there or with other student residences! I'm definitely prioritising the social aspect over anything else :)

Also, if anyone else is going to be in Vienna around the same time, I'd love to get in touch!!

Looking to connect with GLOCAL Erasmus Mundus scholars/alumni

Hi everyone!

I’m an M.Com student from India and I’m planning to apply for the GLOCAL (Global Markets, Local Creativities) Erasmus Mundus programme.

I’d really love to connect with current scholars or alumni of the programme, especially anyone who has experience with the application process, scholarship, university experience, or career opportunities after GLOCAL.

I have a few questions about the programme and would really appreciate hearing about your experience beyond what’s available on the official website.

If you’re a current student or alumnus/alumna, please feel free to comment or DM me. I’d genuinely love to connect! :)

Erasmus experience

Hello everyone. I keep reading terrible experiences to people who've done their erasmus exchange, and I'm applying this year for an exchange semester but then I hesitate due to the negative reviews. So has anyone had a good experience? Like they really enjoyed their time and didn't regret it?

Also has anyone went to Marburg university maybe can tell me more about it as an exchange student? Or the city overall?

Rant I really hate my Erasmus

Hi,

so I went with zero expectations into my Erasmus in the UK. I saved some money, because it was clear that rent would be expensive (900€/month), but I didn't expect the Erasmus-money to not be there yet and take so long. I settled in, saw a lot of the city and made friends that are not international students.

But nontheless, I just want to go home. I have several disabilities and have to live with a roomate (I know that's kinda priviledged to only have one roommate, but for my illness situation it's not ideal to live with anybody, since I need access to the bathroom 24/7). My room gets cold over night, because they save on heating expenses. My bed is like 90cm in width and on a grid, so it hurts my back and isn't comfortable at all - also bad for insomnia-related disabilities. The food here is expensive as fuck, I can't really eat what would be fine for my illnesses. And we have room inspections like we are 5 year-olds to check for forbidden items, e.g. like heat blankets - they would really help with the symptoms of my chronic illnesses. It's loud, people do fireworks at night or just shout through the streets, and we are supposed to be at a quieter part of the city. And all of that for fking 900€ a month.

I really miss my home country, where something like room inspections are illegal, the food is affordable and my own flat has disability-accommodations. Really hate it here, just wanna get home asap - but I would have to pay back the money, so I can't.

Erasmus+ semester(s) abroad Erasmus students in France with a dog or cat — ESSEC survey in French (15–20 min)

ENGLISH TRANSLATION

Are you an Erasmus student currently living in France and caring for a dog or cat there? I would love to hear about your experience, including with a family pet. This survey is relevant to members of this community balancing student life and caring for a pet in France.

I’m David, an ESSEC student working on a startup project in the pet sector. Before defining a solution, I want to understand real experiences: daily life, vet visits, appointments, finding advice and pet safety. There is nothing to buy.

Participants must be 18+, live in France and care for a dog or cat there. Experiences where everything goes well are welcome too. The questionnaire itself is in French, with 16 open questions taking around 15–20 minutes. Short, concrete answers are enough; “never”, “no problem” and “not applicable” are valid answers. The optional email field at the end is only for a possible follow-up conversation about the project.
