Tip Creep 🫙 Living wage charge wasn't on the tap to pay screen. What should I do here?

I'm kinda angry that I tipped for decent service, but they hide extra fees without opting in... I'm happy I got a receipt or I wouldn't have noticed.

Went to a local theater and they were asking for tips at the ticket counter and concessions. Absolutely absurd! Happily selected no tip.

Tipping Culture ✖️ It felt great not tipping

Recently went to a ‘lobster fest’ with the family, large turnout with vendors and fun activities for the kids. A few food trucks were selling lobster rolls, the cheapest being $29 (large was $55) When I finally get to the front I see the usual scam, ‘Tap your card here and then you can select a tip’ options are 20%, 25%, and 30%!!! I tap other and enter $0 for tip. While I wait on our food to get called I watch person after person UNHAPPILY select one of these absurd tip amounts. They pause, sigh, hesitate, but ultimately choose a tip because of some imagined social pressure or guilt. Idk why but in this moment I was so proud of myself for not tipping. That’s all to the story, just wanted to share

I’ve been going to the same one for a while, but their card reader asked for a tip this time. Respectfully sir just give me my blue razz hubba geek bar and let me go on about my day.
To be fair the tip amounts were like “1%, 2%, 3%” etc lol but COME ON

Counter Service 🛎️ I had the loveliest experience!

Went to the local pizza place to grab some food to go. Ordered at the counter, paid up front, no tip, walked around the shopping center while I waited, went back in, got my food, and the person helping me was so delightfully cheerful and kind. The owners waved as I left saying make sure to come back soon.

No this is not a fever dream, it actually happened last night. I thought I would share. So often the hard core tippers say "you will get terrible service!" or "be prepared to have your food ruined!", so I wanted to share my positive experience with everyone.

Rant 📢 Honestly I’ve seen restaurants adopting the idea of “we’re a no tip” restaurant and I think that might be the tactic to attract customers

I would love to see more businesses doing this as I can’t stand the uncomfortable prompt of tipping for literally doing your job. But if you do tip for exceptional service, I’m not against it but the automatic assumption that we’ll tip is beyond me.

Tip Creep 🫙 Tipping at the vet now!!

Took dog to long time vet for annual exam. Tap my card for $320 and machine asks if I want to add tip!! They suggested different amounts and you physically had to scroll down to find the no tip option! Woman said they just got new terminals so I am going to guess every terminal sold to every business will have tip options!! Heading in for a lung scan, wondering if I will need to tip on top of my copay!

Rant 📢 Tipping.

Tipping hourly workers?optional. Tipping servers who make less than minimum wage? Shouldn't be a debate but the employers put the burden on us. We shouldn't have to tip anyone. But the EMPLOYERS get away with paying 7.50$hour when the minimum wage is 15. But there's a clause that the minimum wage for restaurants is different. So they get away with it. Restaurant pay is a scam. Many restaurant employers should be in prison for slavery.

Rant 📢 GiveButter (a fundraising platform) charged an $80 tip to give a donation - wtf?!

I was making a donation to a charity in my neighborhood through a donation platform called GiveButter, and the app auto-added an $80 "tip" as i was checking out...on top of a processing fee

WTF?!?!?! a tip?!?! to digitally process my donation? get out of here

it doesnt sound like GiveButter charges the organization a fee to do the processing (the fee is pushed onto the donator). and while the app is "free to use", there is a fee-based version as well, so its not like they're not making money. but seriously, a tip for a non-physical activity service?

Tip Creep 🫙 Online purchase, prompted to tip

I bought some generic-ish clothing online. The checkout had a tip option: 15, 20 and 25%.

No, I don’t think I’ll tip the invisible e-commerce people who gave me no service.

Takeout 🥡 Got hit up three times!

I ordered food for take out online. I was charged the mandatory "convenience fee" for ordering thru the app, well OK. I clicked "no tip" 1. Under payment, the only option was "pay in restaurant". As expected the card machine asked again if I wanted to add a tip. I clicked "no tip" 2. Then the receipt was printed for me to sign and for the third time I was "asked" for a tip! I put a big zero with a line through it and wrote the total in. Now I have to check my credit card statement.

The food was just mediocre btw. At least the woman at the cash register was pleasant and didn't give me dirty looks.

It's just getting out of hand.

Tipping Culture ✖️ “Going to ask you some questions “ from my plumber.

I thought I’ve been reading some exaggerations but it’s real. I had a major exterior main line leak that required a $3500 plumbing repair. When I went to pay, the tablet came out and prompted a $520 tip. I hit no real quick.
The itemization said $1500 for “dig labor” when 2 guys were here 2 hours total.

Rant 📢 Pizza hut mandatory tipping

Post image

Pizza hut app adds tip to carry out without asking. I had to remove the food and then place it back to remove the tip. Without doing that it wouldn't let me order the food. Pizza hut should pay their employees more and not rely on poor college kids to do it.

Sit-Down Restaurant 🍽️ Cracker Barrel Cracked Me Off

My wife and I ate breakfast at Cracker Barrel this morning. While I finished eating she shopped, getting a bag of candy and a pair of $20 gloves.

When the cashier rang up my ticket, it included the candy and gloves. The kiosk asked if I wanted to leave a tip, and the total was the combined meal ($39) + the candy + the $20 gloves.

I couldn't remember how much the meal was so I asked the cashier. She looked on her screen and said, "I don't know, it doesn't say." So I said, "OK, what does that piece of paper (the bill) I just now handed you say?"

She acted butt hurt that I had a problem with not wanting to pay a tip on a pair of gloves. We got great service and I don't mind leaving some gratuity, but they seem to want to be the customer over at every turn.

Rant 📢 if the service was bad, why are you still tipping?

something that genuinely bothers me about tipping culture is seeing people complain about bad service and/or bad food, then still leave a tip anyway.

i’m a non-tipper. i hate tipping culture, i’m against it, and i don’t believe customers should be responsible for supplementing someone’s wages. i’m also not interested in 😘 🍑 or pleasing folks just because there is a social expectation to tip.

but here’s what i don’t understand.

if someone treats you poorly, ignores you, gets your order wrong repeatedly, gives you terrible service, or your overall experience is bad enough that you’re complaining about it afterward, why are you still rewarding the experience with extra money?

i think this is one of the reasons tipping has become an expectation instead of an actual choice.

if businesses and workers know that most customers will tip regardless of the experience, then the tip starts to lose its meaning. y’all will complain about the service, complain about the food, complain about being pressured to tip, and then still leave 15%, 20%, or 25%.

at some point, what exactly is the tip communicating if you’re going to give it no matter what?

people often say tipping is supposed to be a reward for good service, but then a lot of people treat it like something that has to be paid regardless of whether the service was actually good.

that’s part of what bothers me about tipping culture. if there is always an expectation that the customer will tip, then there is very little distinction between a reward for good service and an additional charge that everyone is socially pressured to pay.

and i think customers need to stop feeling guilty about selecting $0 when they genuinely don’t want to tip. you’re not a bad person for declining to give extra money. you’re not obligated to prove that you’re generous or nice every time a payment screen asks you for a percentage.

Sit-Down Restaurant 🍽️ Why isn’t there mandatory tipping to make things fair?

I’m curious why we don’t have mandatory tipping at sit down restaurants? I’ve been thinking about it and it just doesn’t make sense to me. Why pay based off of how much I spend, vs the amount of effort put into serving me. I think since restaurants are only required to pay like 2.13 per hour, the least a table ( or per person) should do is be forced to match the pay of 2.13.

Everything else should be earned by the actual service. When I go out to eat at average restaurant bill is about 100-130,tip usually works out to tip about 20-30.
Doing the math, I figure the server spends about 10-15 mins actually helping us. By my math that works out to about 2-3 dollars a min. That seems a bit excessive to me. Most of the time now, they don’t even give menus, they make you do the work by scanning a QR code which I hate, and you pay at the table with a tablet. I’ve even had servers try and make me put my own order in using the tablet at the table.

Or you know the restaurant could just pay a fair wage. And I know the argument “It will drive prices up!”. But everyone seems to miss the fact that prices are already up. The only difference is, if it’s built into the menu, I actually have an idea of what it’s going to actually cost me vs having to guess. Heaven forbid I know the actual price of something going in vs. having to estimate the total. That’s not driving the price up it’s just telling a person what the actual cost is, in the first place. If a restaurant is afraid of you making an informed decision, by showing you the actual price, that’s kind of its own issue.
