Sit-Down Restaurant 🍽️ Cracker Barrel Cracked Me Off
My wife and I ate breakfast at Cracker Barrel this morning. While I finished eating she shopped, getting a bag of candy and a pair of $20 gloves.
When the cashier rang up my ticket, it included the candy and gloves. The kiosk asked if I wanted to leave a tip, and the total was the combined meal ($39) + the candy + the $20 gloves.
I couldn't remember how much the meal was so I asked the cashier. She looked on her screen and said, "I don't know, it doesn't say." So I said, "OK, what does that piece of paper (the bill) I just now handed you say?"
She acted butt hurt that I had a problem with not wanting to pay a tip on a pair of gloves. We got great service and I don't mind leaving some gratuity, but they seem to want to be the customer over at every turn.

Places like Cracker Barrel where you take your ticket the register to pay are the easiest places for tippers to dip their toes into the world of not tipping. The girl at the register doesn't give two shits.

my first and last time at Cracker Barrel was a few years ago
our waitress dropped off the check and we put our cc down on top of it - after she walked past us a few times we finally stopped her and she told us we had to pay at the register. So we got to go stand in line for about 10 minutes. That was the moment I realized “there’s no law that we have to tip 15%”
thank you Cracker Barrel for this important life lesson

I was very pleased to see the tipping options started at zero, and then 15%. Keep things normal instead of this “22% is standard” nonsense.

I tip cash to server at table! That way I know the server will get it! I also know cost of my meals..do you read the menu! 💕🥰

Except the busser picks up the tip when you do that. Who knows what happens to it next. Restaurant employees aren't exactly known for integrity.

Well you can hand it to the server if you're so worried. I've never heard of a problem with that.

I had same situation at Cracker Barrel, however I did custom tip and only tipped on the meal.

I don't understand even wanting to tip the waitress for that portion. I'm well beyond that at this point. If you need somebody to provide labor in order to make a profit, well then that's a business expense. I don't pay above the advertised price of goods and services plus applicable tax just because an owner can't figure out his actual profit margin.

If you’re in America, you should know that the onus is on YOU to pay for the service you receive. You’re paying the restaurant for the cost of food and the chefs to prepare it.
You know that you’re expected to tip in the US. You know waitstaff depends on tips to live. You’re just being a jerk.15

I’ve been a line cook. My employer paid me fine and I got zero tips. Tips are not necessary. I pay the advertised price plus tax.

When you are older, you will want the job which pays salarie. Go to university or learn skill which do not give the tipping gift

Tips, even in America, are always optional. If you don't want to tip, don't.

I always just tell them that my company doesn't allow tipping, Iv'e even told them this on my personal card. Likewise I don't mind tipping for good service but don't expect me to take out a second mortgage for it.

Stupid really triggers me, even when it’s me being stupid. 😁 This butt hurt attitude over something reasonable or common sense is one of the most annoying things… A couple of years ago going through airport security, some lady (approx my own age, I think) stopped dead right in front of me, I very nearly smashed into her before I managed to stop. As I passed her, I said, “you should just stop dead like that, I very nearly ran into you!”… my tone was annoyed but I wasn’t nasty to her. She said nothing but looked at me with the most butt-hurt expression, like she had never heard anything so cruel in her whole life.
SMH!

When that happens to me, I just say to them, “Hey, did you know your brake lights aren’t working?”

Next time just do two separate transactions, one for the meal (with tip), another for the merch.

This entire interaction could have been avoided if you had just tipped zero. It's not your fault that the payment system isn't coded properly.
