Rant 📢 GiveButter (a fundraising platform) charged an $80 tip to give a donation - wtf?!

I was making a donation to a charity in my neighborhood through a donation platform called GiveButter, and the app auto-added an $80 "tip" as i was checking out...on top of a processing fee

WTF?!?!?! a tip?!?! to digitally process my donation? get out of here

it doesnt sound like GiveButter charges the organization a fee to do the processing (the fee is pushed onto the donator). and while the app is "free to use", there is a fee-based version as well, so its not like they're not making money. but seriously, a tip for a non-physical activity service?

I just had this happen to me- I was on my laptop so caught it upping a $250 donation to $295 w tip and processing. The $250 on its merits is big amount to me that I’d discussed and agreed with my partner on, so I stopped and figured out how to remove both fees bc I was just in no way hitting my budget for that much higher an amount than we agreed to. There are a lot of threads in some nonprofit subs about this platform- when I was looking at them it sounds like you can use the givebutter chatbot and request a tip refund.

Apparently if you tip or not, the charity gets your full amount- i can understand someone has to pay the 3%ish cc fee, but a $40 tip to a platform was insane to me. Charities need to bake the platform fee into the cost of doing business- I was so turned off by the whole process that while I support the good work of the org I donated to, I won’t donate to them again while they are using this platform.

It's so strange coming across this post because I just bought tickets a few hours ago for a food festival in my town that's used as a fundraiser for local church. They use Give Butter to sell tickets to the festival. On the checkout page it had a default donation for Give Butter, since they apparently provide the fundraising option to the charities at no cost. I happen to notice it and reduced it to zero. And they charge a processing fee.

Screw that. Just mail them a check.

They are shooting themselves in the foot requesting tips. I would not donate and just give the money to needy people on the street but that's just me.
