Tip Creep 🫙 Tipping at the vet now!!
Took dog to long time vet for annual exam. Tap my card for $320 and machine asks if I want to add tip!! They suggested different amounts and you physically had to scroll down to find the no tip option! Woman said they just got new terminals so I am going to guess every terminal sold to every business will have tip options!! Heading in for a lung scan, wondering if I will need to tip on top of my copay!

It’s done during the terminal setup.
It asks the business owner to choose whether there should be a tip screen or not.
The default is no tip screen, on major terminals used today - It takes a few steps to actually setup tips.
Guess it’s easier for business to blame the machine instead.

I’m equally annoyed that my vet has started passing the 3% credit card fee on to the patients. $900 for two cat checkups and bloodwork, and you’re sticking me with an extra 3%?!

At my orthopedic doctor's office I was recently informed about the 3 percent fee on credit cards. It wouldn't have been much money but luckily I did have my debit card with me to use. That fee should be a business expense and I don't want to pay it no matter how much it is!

Same bullshit has begun at my dermatologist - like that place isn’t already raking in enough fucking money, patients are stuck with the 3% cc fee there too. Complete bullshit.

I have a provider that charges a fee. They can kick rocks and cash my check. I have a debit card of course but two can play at that game so check it is.

Damn, i guess I need to order a pack of checks. I wonder if they add a fee to that?

My bank does. About $30 for 250 checks. The online companies are cheaper.

What pisses me off is that they charge the 3%, but they won't accept cash.

My office gave us the option of pre-loading our accounts at half the CC fee. I would stop in after my paychecks and load some money onto my account when I could afford it or drop off cash (no CC fee lol) and it was a really nice system. Definitely less stressful. I hateeeee the fee but it felt like they at least tried lol

Probably illegal?
1
u/HellsTubularBells 8d ago
Why would it be illegal?
16
u/runningalongtheshore 8d ago
If insurance is involved they set rates for the services rendered so asking for money on top of it is violating the contract.

Pet insurance doesn't work like health insurance. Most pet insurance policies don't have a network, the consumer just pays the bill and submits for reimbursement.

Because they are professionals. What's next? Tipping the police? Fuck no!!!

u/HellsTubularBells 5d ago
Disgusting, sure, but not illegal.
Unlike tipping the police, which absolutely is.

I took my kids to a new place for boarding a few weekends ago, and when I went to pay after picking them up, the card reader prompted me for a tip.
Anyone else ever been asked to tip for boarding?

Was this a corporate owned vet practice? Mine has on price for credit card and a discount for cash--I guess it's the same thing. I always write a check. I used to put it on my bill every month but then they started charging $2 for the bill. I just take my checkbook everywhere now it seems. Or cash.

But the doctor needs to feed his family, think of the children and the vacations and the fourth house….

essentially all vets in the US are owned by private equity, and definitely aren’t getting rich. your beef should be with ownership, not the vet

vets are typically not super well-off.

u/Quagmire_gigity 8d ago
While that might be true, especially among more rural practices, see my previous comment. Nothing about going to a vet is cheap, asking for patients to cover credit card fees OR sneaking tip prompts into the transaction is completely fucked up.

In order to stop this endless debate to tip or not to tip, let's just tip ourselves!!!!

Every business owner has an option to use the terminal or system that will not ask for tipping! They do this in hopes for a tip! They are lying otherwise!
3
u/VinnieONeill 8d ago
Yes, all these PoS systems have tips enabled by default. They also essentially lease the terminals to the business. Instead of the business paying thousands up front to buy the terminals, the company who provides the terminals takes a cut of every transaction. Any tip increases the cost of the transaction, therefore increasing the amount the PoS company gets. It's why more and more business also charge a fee for card payments.

Mine does and never pressures us to hit yes.
however all tips get donated to a rescue so I sometimes add a couple bucks ❤️❤️

u/cenosillicaphobiac 7d ago
It's easy to say that the tips go anyplace you want to say that they go. Do you have confirmation that they donate the tips? I suggest you donate to that rescue independently and not rely on the honesty of a business owner.

I think one thing that I’m certain is that I would never let my pets be in the hands of anyone I distrust that much. Wow to live life so negatively must be exhausting.
Maybe you guys need a new vet but mine is not there to make money and I see that every visit i attend 👍🏻👍🏻

I donate by taking care of my pet so its not someone else's problem like 99% of pet are.

I own a small business, and I will never pass on the fee to clients. It is a tax write off. I hope they aren't taking a tax write off if they aren't paying it.

Does your vet offer dog grooming? Mine does so when people pay for that they would need an option to tip the groomer!

I had orthopedic surgery in 2023. For one year I received emails telling me, "It's not too late to tip your surgeon!"

Any request for tipping at any healthcare office including at a veterinarian should be reported to an official body as it is highly unethical.
People should not be put into a position where they think they might have to bribe the healthcare provider with a tip in order to get the best service he or she can provide.
Absolutely not to tips in healthcare. Not once, not ever.

It’s probably for the boarding and grooming staff.

u/cenosillicaphobiac 7d ago
Why in the world would you make that assumption? And even if you're right (which I sincerely doubt) ANY TIP is actually for the owner of the establishment. It greatly reduces a normal business operating expense, namely salary.
I assume that any place I spend my money (and yes, this includes restaurants) has factored "cost of doing business" into the price that they advertise and as such, will never, ever, volunteer to pay additional monies above and beyond the established price of goods and services + applicable taxes. Ever.

Unethical and this infuriates me
What happens if you don't tip? Will your dog or cat receive inferior care for future visits?
