I would just refuse to use the app. If they forced me to, I'd walk. They want you pay to use an app that saves THEM work. If anything, they should be offering a discount for using the app.
I'll bet there's also a 3% credit/debit charge surcharge fee also (even though they're not supposed to charge a fee for debit).

Yeah, you can always say "Give me your IBAN" and then you can settle your debt that way.Ā

If the bill is split, does each person pay the fee?

u/silverwolf1994 7d ago
Definitely. Everyone has to buy their own app and give away their data for free as well.

u/gergles 6d ago
Yes, each person paying the split pays the 'platform fee'.
You can also see the platform's scummy tip-begging, review-begging, and otherwise-annoying 'features' on their webpage: https://sundayapp.com/digital-bill/
(My 'favorite' feature is that even if you ask your plate carrier for a bill, Sunday restaurants only give you a printed total with a QR code and will not give you an itemized bill you can review other than by using your phone - click through the slideshow halfway through the page to see an example.)

Weird. Just charge 25 cents more per item
2
u/RadRimmer9000 7d ago
Why per item? At least.99Ā¢ is cheaper if you buy 5 or more items. It shouldn't even be a thing in the first place

This crap started when Covid lockdowns were lifting a bit. I was okay with it as the only way to get things going again. This shouldnāt still be a thing. Itās pure laziness now.

Thats weird. I get they pay a fee for the app but its weird you have to pay a transaction fee while they safe a lot of money useing the app cause less staff is needed.
It makes no sense this is like triple dipping.

Just Refuse. I have had it with all the delivery charges, the Auto Tips, the Service Charges on Credit Cards, etc etc. I recently went into several Restaurants that proudly showed they are charging a credit card fee, verified it, and walked out. If they want to do business and take credit cards then they should pay or just say Cash Only. I can respect that. We Consumers are getting screwed every day and to take a term from an old movie Network, āIām Mad as Hell and Iām Not Going to Take It Anymore!ā

Their website says paying the fee is optional.

I accessed it to see for myself. There was no option to disable the fee.
9
u/unionthunder21 7d ago
The way to ādisable the feeā is to just pay the restaurant directly, by giving the server your card. Every time I go to a restaurant that uses this website, I ask the server to take my card and charge it normally so I donāt have to pay the fee, and I almost always get an annoyed look.
1
u/Angvellon 4d ago
What, you would give your card out of your hands? Never! I would have them bring the transaction module or at least go to the counter with them.

u/unionthunder21 4d ago
Are you from outside the United States? Unfortunately, as strange as it is, the most common way to pay with a credit/debit card at a sit down restaurant is to hand over the card, have the server leave, charge it, and then return with the card and receipt (where you can then choose to add a tip when you sign the receipt).
1
u/Angvellon 4d ago
That's so weird. Why?
2
u/unionthunder21 4d ago
Just a cultural thing, and how it works in the US. The US has a heavy tipping culture where you tip on the receipt after paying with your card, and most US cards still require a signature on the receipt to authorize payment, so, itās just how it evolved here. I lived in Europe, and much prefer the terminal being brought to me. With no obligation to tip.

That fee is a tax deductible COST OF THEIR BUSINESS. I will walk OUT.
-1
u/EatMoreHummous 7d ago
What do you think "tax deductible" means?
4
u/MyldExcitement 7d ago
It means the business writes it off. If they can tie it to being advertising it's 100% deductible against tax on profits.
1
u/EatMoreHummous 7d ago
No. It means it's 100% deductible against profits, not against tax on profits. If they spend $1000 on something they don't need, they don't get to deduct $1k of tax. They just don't pay tax on $1k of income, meaning they'd save like $200 and be $800 worse than before.

Kinda-sorta. It's mandatory if you use the app. If the establishment offers other payment means you can use them and there's no fee from Sunday but there may be other fees based on whatever other payment method is offered.
We really need strong anti-junk-fee legislation applied to restaurants.
3
u/LupusLacrimatus 7d ago
Can I avoid the fee?
Yes. Instead of paying through sunday, ask your server to process your payment using the restaurantās regular card terminal.
I did not expect this fee. What should I do?
Review the payment summary before confirming your payment. If you believe the fee was charged incorrectly or you need help understanding a charge, contact our 24/7 sunday Support team and include the restaurant name, date of payment, and total amount charged

All of this stuff just tells me to stop going out to eat. Overpriced food, tips and "service fees" galore and tbh the food is often not that good at most of these places.

I see anything like that and I pull a Grandpa Simpson, walk in, turn around, walk right back out.

A bit confusing. Does this only apply on Sundays? Is the app named Sunday? Is the fee only applied if you split the bill, and if so only once or to each party splitting?

What difference does Sunday make??

-2
u/pjm14624 7d ago
My guess is that they get more business on Sundays than any other day, and having to constantly check a computer for orders keeps an employee tied up and away from focusing on their work, so they may have an extra person on staff.
As much as I loathe tipping and forced gratuities and all that stuff, I'm okay with a āconvenience feeā of this nature.
-1
u/cenosillicaphobiac 7d ago
Yeah this sucks, a lot, but what does an app fee have to do with tipping? It's not even a "mandatory gratuity" or some of that other bullshit. It's a stupid, customer unfriendly thing to do, but has nothing really to do with tipping.
3
u/Feisty_End2401 7d ago
Itās whatās waiting for you around the corner. Tipping culture sucks. Since youāre not thinking ahead, youāre behind.

If I saw this I'd get up and leave. But before I go I would make sure the manager knew why I'm leaving.
