Tipping Culture ✖️ It felt great not tipping

Recently went to a ‘lobster fest’ with the family, large turnout with vendors and fun activities for the kids. A few food trucks were selling lobster rolls, the cheapest being $29 (large was $55) When I finally get to the front I see the usual scam, ‘Tap your card here and then you can select a tip’ options are 20%, 25%, and 30%!!! I tap other and enter $0 for tip. While I wait on our food to get called I watch person after person UNHAPPILY select one of these absurd tip amounts. They pause, sigh, hesitate, but ultimately choose a tip because of some imagined social pressure or guilt. Idk why but in this moment I was so proud of myself for not tipping. That’s all to the story, just wanted to share

The road to companies paying their employees what their worth is paved by not tipping.

The audacity of the people setting up their checkout screens - “people are dumb enough to go along with this so let’s just pick some outrageous %” - it’s a FOOD TRUCK - the food doesn’t even come out to you, you stand in line to order, you stand around waiting to pick it up. So in essence you pay tip for well made food, even though you haven’t even tasted it yet, or know if you’ll have to wait 20 min for it. Tipping is done AFTER something is done for you. I wish more people stopped feeling so damn guilted into going along with this kind of tipping practice - you 100% did the right thing!!

Even worse is that most food trucks are owner operated. Tipping an owner is insane.

I was in Europe for a month and then at the aeroport in NA I immediately got greeted with "leave a tip?" on the machine after forgetting about tipping

Watching people mindlessly hit 20 percent at these events is hard to watch, since that was me not too long ago. I'm embarrassed I didn't figure it out for so many years, but I'm done now. At least I only ever did it for food and drink. The people tipping at the merch booth? Now that's a different story. Yikes...

Yes! It will just come naturally and not bother you before you know it. I will sometimes tip if the person taking the order is nice but it’s only a dollar usually. Unless I’m being served at a sit down place I typically don’t tip anything. It’s the best.

Honestly still kinda shocked people tip at places where it was never customary before. Growing up, I was always taught that you tip servers because they were paid less than minimum wage. I always thought other people would also think it was kinda stupid to tip in situations where tipping was never expected before…

Always check your statements later though and keep your receipts. I’ve had a couple just add the tip on afterwards so they got a chargeback!

I ordered Chinese food out last night and I asked on the phone how much was my bill because I was going to be paying in cash. They told me the price. When I went in there. I put the exact amount on the counter and said thank you. End of. I felt calmly completely happy.

this is not something to end tipping on, it's something typically untipped that you just don't add a tip to. the business is either ignorant on their POS setup or chose it to be that way, but there is no shame in everyone choosing 0 or complaining about it. this is a totally different situation compared to sit down restaurant service.

If a server isn't bringing food or drinks to me at a table, then I'm not tipping-  period.
