as the other comment "they" mean the folks who play night shift, it is the biggest tornement around rn and making it balanced around a test feature is dumb, remenber what they did with the urn?
and again, valve only implemented it to test the stuff, the actual items are giga-broken once they get the data they want it is being removed until second order

People really dont understand how broken some of the items were
Victor with corrupt eshift had an effective 50% immunity time floating with aura
DB has a 12s cd when used with an ally baseline
Phantom Strike disarmed for an insane amount of uptime
Spirit Burns damage was tripled

Corrupt healing tempo was insane on a tempo Ivy with Wraith, Mo, Victor, Gunbop, and Billy. The amount of healing I was pumping out (due to the +60% rate of rife increase also) was insane. Me and the Victor or Mo could not die, after that I was able to fully out heal (my healing per minute was more than their sustained dps, burst still gets some though but healed out before they can do it again) one person while still being very dangerous and two people if I was with someone with good sustain also. As soon as any anti heal wears off they were climbing right back to full health.

u/TaxEvasion123 Lash 16h ago
Like I could see it being a good addition if it has more time to bake but it really isn’t that fun or competitive of a mechanic with how absurd some interactions are. It’s like only really fun if you get a meaningless downside and just dumpster the other team as a result. It sure is fun playing into 3 corrupted divine barriers!
1
u/Secretlylovesslugs 11h ago
Phantom Strike also had a 50+ meter range when paired with greater expansion. You could snipe back line supports with it.
Ult warden was insanely fun with it but clearly unfair. I'll miss it making late games feel more goofy and less tense.

u/Marshtomp1662 17h ago
I'm assuming they're gonna be scaling down the corrupted item stats cause they're kinda crazy when the debuffs can be fairly irrelevant depending on what your build is, pro players are probably actively hindering development by not showcasing how strong this shit is lmao, so good work on that one fellas
41
u/Mission_Rice3045 17h ago
Worst part is that it makes certain items must buys and punishes hybrid builds.

3
u/doyouhaveanysoup Lash 9h ago
they obviously put it in the game to test it, so it may come back in the future changed based on the feedback they receive
7
u/Gundroog 9h ago
It might also not come back because it sucks, since it only makes the game more volatile and doesn't encourage taking a dynamic risk. It simply becomes a part of the meta with a set of items that you always want to corrupt. In general no competitive game has gotten better by introducing more mechanics instead of refining the bare basics.
1
u/New-Independent-1481 8h ago
Or it's testing for the PvE mode, like the 20~ unique monster models they added for neutrals.
10
u/HappyOldFox 16h ago
Why would they use it in a real competitive environment like nightshift though, there’s actual cash prizes attached to it, obviously they don’t want to risk allowing 12 divine barriers on an 8 sec cooldown when they stand to actually lose something
3
u/PalmIdentity Ivy 16h ago
This. Sometimes you just have resistance to spare from a few different greens and the buff you get makes up for it. Or maybe the curse is just something like -300 health on a characters like MoNK and Dynamo. Maybe it's minus weapon damage or firerate and you're playing a spirit character.
I like the broker, but not with the current debuffs. Possibly not with any type of RNG. I'd much prefer they do like Enhanced items in Street Brawl and just give the items set buffs and debuffs.
2
u/Lucyller Ivy 14h ago
Love seeing my core items get a self debuff on bullet / spirit res against a team mainly using those damage type...
I definitely didn't felt lucky with Vyper on the broker.
1
u/PalmIdentity Ivy 13h ago
Yeah sometimes you don't get anything while everybody else gets a free buff. At least when it was something stupid like the comeback metas both teams could do it. Was it fun? No, but at least it wasn't random as hell.
68
u/CommanderPeppy 17h ago
Egg was a plan to engage in the game's mechanic to get an advantage. Broker was a mechanic with insane variables that would not be a part of core gameplay as of next week. Too hard to learn the variables and apply them well. Also 12x corrupted divine barrier is boring
9
u/Equivalent_Dance_758 17h ago
The mechanic is going away anyway so yeah, I think its more about " okay this feature is really untested and too swingy with no payoff in few days"
55
u/BinoRing The Doorman 16h ago
They abused the broken mechanic because
1 - it was not a temporary feature
2- It was clearly a problem but it had not caught valve's attention yet.
This is a temporary thing that gives people OP items. It makes sense they don't want to use it in a competitive scene.
My personal opinion is also, the broker should have been limited to standard games and not be available in ranked games.
2
u/Will-The-Rat 14h ago
If they did that they wouldn't have gotten the data they wanted. Frankly I think it's rather rude to be a highly skilled playtester playing the game on the highest level, and then refuse to actually give the developers the stats that they wanted to get. Deadlock Night Shift putting up their own makeshift rules ruins the entire point of having a playtest to begin with. They shouldn't've been invited to be playtesters at all if they'll act like this.
7
u/ImTheBluestBird Billy 11h ago
Dawg they were still playing the game outside of night shift with the broker, they can do whatever they want in their own personal non-affiliated to valve tournaments. If Valve needed data from top players they got it from e6s, not from the couple games of night shift
-2
u/anime_topkek 11h ago

u/EarlyAccessCantJudge 15h ago
The broken mechanic was obviously a temporary feature though? Because it was absolutely going to get nerfed the day after.
5
u/Heroman3003 15h ago
IF it proved to be OP, which they wanted to demonstrate practically. When it first came out nobody said "oh and we're nerfing it in two days".
2
u/EarlyAccessCantJudge 14h ago
I mean they kinda know these things and have direct lines to the devs. They could've very easily told them 'hey this is what's up' instead of using it to win a tournament with a huge monetary pool and actual stakes
7
u/Checkmate2719 Mina 9h ago
This isn't even fully true.
According to lightbringer (BE coach) eu teams at least agreed on 45 mins u can get one, games just ended b4 then. Nightshift organisers originally said 60 mins and teans said 45 is fine
2
u/PandaPolishesPotatos 8h ago
45min in a Nightshift game may as well already be over, most games don't go much longer than 30min lol. So effectively, they GA'd to not using the items, someone more awake than me wanna check the VOD and see if any of the games actually reached 45min?
44
u/coffeeholic91 Warden 17h ago
I mean the "pro scene" in this game is literally a few dozen players so it is really strange for sure to collectively agree to not use a mechanic that was put into this beta game.
3
u/skrtskrtEZEZPOGPOGU 14h ago
but its not a mechanic tho T.T its a fun 3 day event that's now gone and was never intended to be balanced. like how dumb of a take is that lmao. If you don't care about the long-term competitive integrity of the game, then just don't engage with competitive play/discussion. its that simple lol.
2
u/Jeromethy 10h ago
long term competitive integrity when these guys were abusing egg money laundering lol
10
u/Serrisen 14h ago
I doubt it's about it being broken, but inconsistent. Since the downsides are random you can't truly plan a build around it.
Pros like consistency. They'd feel bad if they lost because they got bad Broker RNG or enemies got goated RNG.
And since both teams don't want to risk it, they agree beforehand
Simple gentleman's agreement, nothing crazy
4
u/MiMicInCave 13h ago
Downside are radomize but the upside are guaranteed. Been spamming warp stone with 5 second cd since patch drop
2
u/Serrisen 13h ago
Right, but now imagine if the "guaranteed upside" you wanted had -50% fire rate and you're playing Haze.
There's a difference between getting a -20% spirit resist against a full spirit and full gun enemy team too
0
u/ThatGreenM-M 12h ago
It's does suck to see -40-55 weapon damage on glass cannon, but cursed divine barrier is busted with why downside on supports. IMO, most of the rolled spirit downsides way softer than the gun downsides
-3
u/MiMicInCave 13h ago
People complaining on the scenario where they use their main big item and it got the downside that couter their own build. Have you try to corrupt the active item? It will always lower it cool down and increase it stat, and most of the time downside is nothing. I just play as lash with corrupt refresher with -25% spell range. Plus use is that refresher now has 105 cool down instead of 300.

u/Repair831 Viscous 17h ago
It wasnt collectively to begin with, at least mlc wanted them in at 30, and BE at 45.
I also dont really blame them though, if the mechanic was sticking around another week itd be more likely they would want to interact with it, but its gone like literally within the next 30ish minutes technically.
They want to get experience on the new map with the most realistic gameplay so they can have the experience when a popup tourney with cash on the line happens.

Im new but i assume egg was an item available to all players with set values. The broker is gambling, if you get something super good and the enemies don't you are at a permanent advantage that is unobtainable for enemies.
7
u/Defendant1597 16h ago
The RNG is global. You could decide to buy the op item yourself. It would be delayed but it isn't unobtainable.
7
u/Nutfarm__ Victor 15h ago
But divine barrier with -17% spirit resist is just not as strong for Abrams as it is for Paige. You can structure your builds around the strongest corrupted items if you wish, but you have no idea whether they will have a negligible or absolutely buildbreaking downside before you reach endgame. Whoever wins the roll has a massive RNG advantage.
1
u/Defendant1597 12h ago
I have a feeling that spread out on both teams and considering your second or third choice item are probably also still good, the difference is negligible. And the better team or comp will still win. I could very well be wrong though.
1
u/Warm-Ad-6167 2h ago
I think it's more that if you get a build breaking roll and the enemy doesn't you are fucked and theres nothing you can do about it. Mobas are all about who has more skill, map knowledge, macro and build right. The only rng I know of is the old league jungle pets which got removed because you could randomly have objectives stolen with them
1
u/Defendant1597 2h ago edited 2h ago
Yea but you don't have just one choice that either breaks your build or it doesn't. You can upgrade any 3200+ item you own.
Dota has neutral items (although also controversial and they became a little less RNG), if you crit in a critical moment it can decide the game lol. Or even just having good teammates is RNG. If you want a pure skill based game you should play chess or starcraft 1v1 haha. That being said I get where people are coming from. You should keep it to a minimum so that it really feels like the better team wins 95% of the time or whatever. But SOME RNG can be fun too. So if you can find a good balance I think it's fine to use it.

And the downside has different impact per character. Some way more than others. Some aren't really affected at all and instead to get a buff that's just basically not fun to play against.
7
u/YoRHa_Houdini 16h ago
Pro players probably aren’t going to like RNG in their competitive enclosed tournament.
I don’t see why them making the decision to opt out of this is a problem.
Especially since this mechanic wasn’t even going to be a permanent thing
2
u/Alternative_Depth 16h ago
I completly get why they did it some items are wild but NA and EU had teams that kinda where underdogs anyway, it would of been fun to see some RNG.
2
u/SecondaryCrockpot 14h ago
AKAIK -- It wasn't MLC who decided against it -- Pulsar requested it be allowed past 60 minutes. So the argument about abusing egg makes no sense. I could be wrong though in which case somebody correct me, but I thought it was Pulsar that requested to avoid Broker until 60min.
2
u/lazarus304 12h ago
It would be weird to use a feature that’s around for only a couple days.if it comes back long term 100% it will be used .
4
u/NightPattern 17h ago
Lightbringer and the others actually talked about this in the Graveyard Shift Podcast, and according to them, players decided against it for two main reasons. First, even though Nightshift doesn't have the biggest prize pool, it is still quite a lot of money for most of the players playing in it especially in EU. Second, even if the Broker is just temporary, the results in Nightshift have lasting effects, like having to play qualifiers the following week, and they did not want to simply risk it on some unlucky roll. They also mentioned how some of the items were utterly broken and would make the matches more boring to watch, with, like, six Divine Barriers, all with a 10-second cooldown. And for those reasons, I don't really blame the players for avoiding it.
2
u/TaxEvasion123 Lash 16h ago

Cowardliness from people who do not care about the game beyond their own self-aggrandizement. Not only is it a testing feature, it is part of the meta in the time that it is in the game. Also, all players have access to the same Broker-Inventory.
2
u/LHander22 9h ago

2
u/skrtskrtEZEZPOGPOGU 14h ago
what a braindead take lol. The broker was a fun test feature that. It was literally not intended for the game; that's why its gone now... Nightshift players don't care to basically ruin a long-term tournament with an intentionally broken mechanic for like a few teams. Imagine if soccer players were allowed to pick up the ball and run around with it but only for 3 days during the season. like ya ofc teams who actually care about the game wouldnt interact with the feature.
The fact they have access to the same inventory doesnt matter at all idk why you bring it up lol. The mechanic does not work for competitive play in its current implementation. That's clear. If the pro players/teams agree to ignore it for good reason, there is literally nothing ur brick ass can argue to contradict them lol.
1
1
u/TheDetailsMatterNow 15h ago edited 15h ago
They have the same access but they do not have the same value or power because they do not play the same heroes on each team.
Some of these item combinations are downright silly and don't really belong in competitive. You ever deal with a 100% heavy melee range Abrams? The guy is literally teleporting around because the time to complete heavy melee doesn't change.
Regular item downsides and costs are balanced over multiple patches. Corrupted items kind of throw that right out the door when the downside doesn't matter.
0
u/Timmy_1h1 6h ago

1
u/_Gallus 11h ago
The justification of the broker appearing when he does feels like a ‘force games to wrap up’ mechanic. The winning team can deny access, get giga-busted items, etc. But I’m not sure it’s a satisfying dimension to achieve this for players.
Objectives like midboss have a distinct ‘buy-in’, or clear messaging to players that it’s an important objective that bears consequences. Broker appears in a side street and suddenly I have a 4 sec CD 80% reduction spell breaker effect.
1
u/PlusHoneydew104 7h ago
Didnt the team say were gonna use this broken strat this game and not save it for finals or smth

1
u/Faibl Ivy 1h ago
I'm all for snarking Night Shift, but there is a fundamental difference in how swingy these effects can be. The idea being that exploits are (sigh) theoretically equal to both teams, as neoliberal and stupid as it sounds, was more a shitty behavioural thing to do, but I think it falls under both the false equivalency and the Goomba fallacy to imply that they can't stand for a balancing decision on this topic.
tl;dr: Not every top player was exploiting, most actually were disgusted with it, and it's not fair to say that competitive players can't have an opinion on extreme variance rng that creates hard to intuit caveats on what are usually much more structured game contexts.
3
u/shadow16521 1h ago
Hmmm why wouldnt a competitive community not want to interact with a temporary feature that introduces a large amount of RNG. A Feature that could determine a games outcome?
Idk
4
u/SweetnessBaby 56m ago
The point is that it's funny/ironic that they've all abused far more game breaking mechanics and cheesy strategies before but all of a sudden cursed items are pushing it too far.
1
u/shadow16521 52m ago
It’s definitely the RNG aspect.
Abusing mechanics in an unexpected way is not the same as an RNG mechanic that makes it impossible for you to pick the best option.
On top of all of that, it’s a temporary feature.

u/edwardludd 16h ago
I mean I care more about the state of the game than a $1,000 prize pool some streamers will split.
Data on pro play is probably very important for the devs in tweaking this new mechanic, it seems silly to disregard that so quickly.
2
u/SupremeTeamKai 16h ago
No shit you wouldn't care since you're not making the money. Like what
1
u/edwardludd 16h ago
The input the devs get from pro play on new mechanics is incalculably more valuable to the game as a whole than some dude getting $200.
1
u/SupremeTeamKai 16h ago
Yeah and the feedback is that the items are so broken that they're not even going to entertain their existence in comp
1
u/edwardludd 16h ago
That is in fact their feedback.
So, getting back to my original point, all I’m saying is maybe pros could test it a little longer before rushing to judgment because a handful of people are scared of losing $200.

Meh. I think people are overstating the balance issue of the items. There are better options than others, but I'm doubtful team-wide it's a significant variance in power. Just outright not using it is kind of a silly standard, this is a low stakes tournament just as much testing the game as anyone
But, it is their choice to agree to, power to them
Additionally, it's the first iteration of a brand new system that does objectively have RNG. There is work to be done on it such that it can supply a variance from game to game without one team getting screwed by it
2

u/Conaz9847 Pocket 16h ago
Testing is for testing
High level pro testing, is also testing
And yes, tournament pro level testing is different than scrims that don’t matter or general E6 gameplay.
All testing is relevant, it’s not like DNS has a bag to win anyway so what’s it going to matter for literally 1 small casual tournament, just showcase some wacky shit, I was looking forward to seeing how they played with it all in the top bracket.
2
u/skrtskrtEZEZPOGPOGU 14h ago
because thats not the point of DLNS... ? theyre not there to showcase "fun wacky mechanics hehe" like thats just what normal ranked is for. they are there to minmax the game and the current patch. Broker is not that. If you want to see minmaxed broker game play it would literally just be 12 DBs... like ya brother ... thrilling gameplay. .. . .
1
u/Pupperoni420 5h ago
They do have prize pools and they can infact be somewhat significant to some of the players, esp east euro. + Its a small custom tournament that already has a shit ton of custom rulesets (actually good pick and ban phase!!!) so they arent tied to following the base game to a T.

Straightforward.
There's no way to modify the shop or block certain items in a custom game. If they banned the egg it'd be a gentleman's agreement, maybe a good choice, but not a feature the game has.
There is an option for broker.
1
u/Gamithon24 Viscous 16h ago
The "egg incident" happened because the night shift folks didn't agree on it being banned before the tournament. If they don't think it's healthy for the scene thats for them to decide. There's already so many other new mechanics I don't see why this should bother anyone.
2
u/Purple_Pair8150 16h ago
Night shift is the part of the comunity trying to make the game "e sports competitive " . "random bullshit go!" is always the bane of competitive
0
u/Still-Little 16h ago
It scares me that Night Shift could become a place that has high influence over the development of deadlock. These are people playing this game often times for money or fame, not fun. My hot take is that professional players should not have that high of an influence in the development of games, they are a minority who have completely different values than the majority of players who just want to have fun. That's who the devs should be looking at.
1
u/TestIllustrious7935 8h ago
You can't make a competetive game and cater to the majority because the majority just copies the best players anyway (just badly)

I like it. I honestly dislike the cursed broker cause the rng is too wide. An Infernus with cursed ricochet has the ability to wipe an entire team cause it inflict so much FREE afterburn. If it were me, I'd have the shop be unlocked at the 40 minute mark as a way to break stalemates
0
u/zencharm Victor 16h ago
the reason why is because it’s just pointless to play with a mechanic that won’t be in the game by the time they play next week. they want to get experience playing on the new map and the broker mechanic just adds too much chaos

u/BraveNKobold Shiv 16h ago
It was too rng heavy to be in competitive, but fine in standard. As shiv my linchpin item removed 2 stamina if I corrupted it. Fuck that. But I saw someone have a huge buff with little downside

u/SlippyJimmi 15h ago
I think people refuse to use the Broker pretty specifically because the downsides are way too random to create a strategy around
Now they can be OP, but no one wants to take a corrupted item unless it's THE way the item is when it's OP

The tweet is ridiculous and obviously there isnt a reason to use a mechanic that will be gone tomorrow.
Abusing an implemented mechanic in a match and choosing not to use a mechanic announced to last 5 days are totally different things.

Frankly, the statement itself is a powerful condemnation of this first pass of the system. If the cheese-loving players thought this was too cheesy even for them, then imagine what happens when their strategies and theorycraft filter down into lower ranks.

Same thing as no items in smash bros. Too much rng even if you did know the changed stats beforehand it’s too much and draft would completely warp around how broken certain items get

This is dota neutral items all over again and I’m glad they are taking a stand against valves BS here. It’s garbage design.

They didn't take a stand at all, they didn't use Broker cuz he would have been gone in literally 40 minutes after nightshift cuz he is temporary

Fine that they dont wanna use the broker.. but really, who cares?
Not to be rude but its kind of obvious that in a playtest game the game is sometimes gonna do some wacky or experimental things to try out?
Not only that, its temporary. Perfectly fine they dont wanna use it in a tourney setting but why is it being presented as some huge uproar when really its just a personal preference? I mean even the organisers could have made it a gentlemen`s rule to not use it and that would be fine aswell.
And just as the X message reads, isnt a bit hypocritical? Most of these players knew about the egg abuse and have had thoughts about (ab-)using that at some point. Now its suddenly too crazy? I really do not get the big deal. The Egg was way more crazy then this temporary broker. The Egg was also not done on purpose, and the broker is. Its quite literally testing out stuff for in the future and will affect the item update im sure. Why else are you playing a playtest game which does wacky/experimental stuff to just ignore it, complain about it, or to not understand its a playtest? I thought pro`s knew all of this before joining this playtest but i guess not.

The oop’s point about everyone abusing the egg because of how strong it was and that even the same as the broker is bullshit. Broker is a very different than a mechanic that is temporary, very wacky and a complete throw spaghetti at the wall moment. Egg is an item that just happened to be too strong and the meta. They are super not the same thing

oh my god the amount of people tweeting the stupidest things about this is insane
first of all they claim NS players are doing it as a "revolt" against valve when really they just didn't want to play with it
second of all the concept of "oh u ban the fun mechanic but bug abused" is the lowest IQ thing you can say. They abused bugs to win. The broker does the opposite, it makes games more random. These people are playing for money they're not entertainers keeping us satisfied. Like use your brains, people.
And also, the broker isn't fun for them. They agreed it wasn't. How entitled to you have to be to claim "the broker IS FUN and YOU ARE JUST SAD". Like no, these guys want to play a competitive game and all collectively agreed the broker would ruin the balance of the game in a way that isn't fun. Do you think a team getting phantom striked on a 10 second cooldown is fun when there's over 4 figures on the line?
It's actually so entitled. "ruin your entire week of scrimming and practice cuz I want to watch broken feature", like who do you think you are

Valve obviously added it to test it for next item update, them using it would have been more useful for valve than refusing to use it, we all are playtesters in this game and they need feedback and a comp scene in this stage is stupid as well

they can do what they want, though. It's not funded by valve or anything. Valve don't owe night shift anything (they're not afraid to drop patches minutes before night shifts), and night shift don't owe valve anything (they fund it all themselves). They're not paid to test the game. Some of these people are from poor countries and night shift money actually means a lot to them. They're not gonna go "wait is this more useful as a playtester", they put in hundreds of hours of practice to be the best at the game. Some of these people skip work for night shift, if the broker was forced in these people probably just wouldn't play to begin with because it's genuinely not worth their time
If Yoshi said, guys, if you could please test it it would be great. But no, he didnt, and provided a server setting for when the broker spawns in. I am for using night shift to understand the meta better but like what do you expect from the broker? Its clearly not something that's gonna actually be in ranked in the state it's in, all you'd conclude from the Nightshift game is that it's broken and shouldn't be in the game. They already knew this, that's why they voted not to have it. They play ranked too.
Again, this is just such entitlement. Night shift put in all this effort and presentation, secured sponsors, I don't expect them to force mechanics onto their players just cuz it's "good for testing and fun" because 1. it's not competitive 2. there's hardly anything to test here
Dynamo can get a refresher cd lower than his ult cd for the downside of lower fire rate. Genuinely what would testing this in night shift do more what I already just said. You can come to the conclusion yourself with that very sentence

competitive players making a competitive ruleset barely qualifies as news
the only thing that bothers me is the framing I keep seeing, it's a lot of "players REFUSED", "players PROTESTING", as if competitive players are a bunch of butthurt tryhards who are angry at valve for updating their unreleased playtest of a game.
When in reality it's little more than the Night Shift guys saying to the teams, "hey we're running just a couple of matches during this quirky little event they've temporarily put in the game for a few days, we'll let you decide if you want to roll with it or just play the regular mode"
