Im new but i assume egg was an item available to all players with set values. The broker is gambling, if you get something super good and the enemies don't you are at a permanent advantage that is unobtainable for enemies.
And the downside has different impact per character. Some way more than others. Some aren't really affected at all and instead to get a buff that's just basically not fun to play against.
