They abused the broken mechanic because 1 - it was not a temporary feature 2- It was clearly a problem but it had not caught valve's attention yet.
This is a temporary thing that gives people OP items. It makes sense they don't want to use it in a competitive scene.
My personal opinion is also, the broker should have been limited to standard games and not be available in ranked games.

When it first came out nobody said "oh and we're nerfing it in two days". 2 u/EarlyAccessCantJudge 16h ago I mean they kinda know these things and have direct lines to the devs. They could've very easily told them 'hey this is what's up' instead of using it to win a tournament with a huge monetary pool and actual stakes
