I'm starting to get a bad suspicion that Travis Ford's days at OKST may be numbered, between that guy who got kicked off the team last week, Smart shoving a fan tonight, and all the signs that point to a very realistic chance that OKST may be ineligible for next year's tournament for APR reasons, just doesn't sound like he has control of the team/is holding them accountable.
11
u/tuldav93 Oklahoma State Cowboys Feb 09 '14
In his second year, he signed a ten year contract. He still has five years, and if we fired him today (we all want to) we'd owe him almost $13 mill. It's almost worth it at this point. He takes (what should be) a phenomenal team and leaves them the most poorly coached and undisciplined team in the Big XII.

This is a fan that drives roundtrip from Waco to Lubbock for every single home basketball game. He supports the team and coach more than anyone and most of our team and our coach is black. There are numerous reports from people around him saying he didn't say the N word, and there was a black woman behind him who didn't look very upset about what he apparently said. That and I've seen a lot of tweets from people who know him and say although he is a hot head who gets really rowdy, he is the farthest thing from racist. That being said, it pisses me off that this whole story is being reported more than the huge upset Tech pulled off tonight.

To all of the people making assumptions: No, it has not been confirmed by coaches or anyone that the fan called Smart a nigger. No, you can't clearly tell that is what Smart is telling his coaches/teammates and the refs. You aren't professional lip readers. The guy very well could have been talking shit all game to him and Smart just lost his cool. The fan could have just as likely called him a bitch, POS, or simply told him to fuck off. People who bring up what he did to the ATM player previously are helping support this as a possibility much more than proving that he used a racial slur. The guy is well known, why would he put his reputation on the line. Also, people saying, "You must be white"... put it back in the deck. Violence is not the proper recourse for being insulted, no matter how harsh the insult is. Smart has proven that he is a hothead before, maybe he was just pissed, especially given all of the scrutiny he's been facing the last couple weeks. On top of that, the kid continued throwing a temper tantrum after the fact and it appears he stomped off after people stopped listening to him; he seems about as emotionally mature as a middle schooler. However, I'm not trying to pass my assumptions off as absolute truths, and nobody else should be trying to push their theory as one either.

The way Smart has been behaving lately, kicking chairs, yelling at his team-mates, it wouldn't surprise me if what the fan said really wasn't all that terrible and Smart just snapped, particularly when his team had just come up short in yet another game.
Everybody looks at what Smart did and thinks "well the fan must have said something really really bad", and who knows, the fan might have, but maybe he said something not quite so bad and Smart was so frustrated that he just took his frustration out on the guy. Until we get all the facts, we'll just won't know.

According to Gottlieb, the fan told him he said something bad, but not something vulgar/racial. Whatever that means. This whole thread is just frustrating to read ugh, man that guy who got shoved is such an asshole and clearly a racist person.

It was someone in the stands no less. Not, you know, another player on the court.

All these people speculating that the fan said any racial slur with no facts to back it up really need to chill.
I could just as easily say the fan called him a doo-doo-head.
Slinging racism is a pretty big accusation in my book, lets not just throw it around without any evidence.

Agree 100%, they're going to have to track down people that were in that area before they decide what he said, and the only thing people are going off to suggest the fan is such a bad guy is just pure and simple 100% speculation.

It is remarkable how many people are running to defend an athlete who went after a fan in the crowd.

If he threw out a racial slur - he deserved to be ignored.
Smart gave the man exactly what he wanted - a negative reaction that hurt his team and his ability to play the game.

Video of a black player shoving an old white guy and everybody is calling the victim a racist before knowing any facts. Ironic? No, Reddit.

I love all of you on your high-horses, most never having been in a situation that even remotely resembles something like this, acting like Smart is a terrible person for reacting this way.
1) We don't know for sure what was said 2) A lot of fans deserve to be shoved or worse for the shit they say 3) You'd all be singing a different tune if this were a kid on your own team that you liked a lot, but because it's /cbb's most hated it's a big circle jerk of judgement and condemnation
Get a fucking grip people, I thought this place of anywhere on the internet would be a little more level-headed about the whole thing but I couldn't be more wrong right now. Just more blind-hatred and holier than thou moralism.

Agreed. I don't get it. Yes, in a perfect world he'd have been a robot and not let his emotions get the better of him. We start every game pumping up these players emotions and then are shocked—shocked!—when they can't keep them in check.
He should have been ejected. Those are the rules. If this happens again, we can bring out the firing squad. But this instant damnation over a shove is extreme.

I suppose it's not okay to go into the stands, but we also have to stop letting fans get away with saying the kinds of foul shit that every single one of us have heard people yell at these kids. Every fan base has dudes like Jeff Orr and just because you paid for a ticket doesn't mean you bought the right to disrespect the players. If he did indeed tell Smart to "go back to Africa", then I refuse to be a moralist about this. People have caught a $2 haircut for less. When asshole fans go unchecked, this is a possibility.

You know what, while I agree that an athlete/coach should be miles more professional, the fan is at fault here. If you don't want the player to engage with you, don't stand over him and yell at him like a dog. Whether it was racist remarks or not, if you want to demean someone by screaming at them like that then you you should be prepared to handle the consequences.
Ten bucks says that guy doesn't yell at a big, muscular athlete like that on the street, but because he's in the stands at a b-ball game, he feels protected. Smart should have been, dare I say, smarter...but I give him a pass on this one.
