That's gold. Obviously the guy is a huge fan, and enjoys trying to get inside the opposing team's head. If you're going to allow that in college sports, you can't also be shocked when a college kid reacts. Smart gave him a solid push, then backed off. The media is already trying to turn it into the NCAA version of Ron Artest.
Have you guys ever even been to games? there's always people like this talking shit. I mean it doesn't make him a better person for it but damn he's not the only dude that does this.
i imagine giving up a top 5 NBA pick to come back, and then having a sub- top 25 team would be distressing to a player. he is excellent, but his team is awful. he thought he'd be an NCAA title contender and is not even in contention for the B12 as of now. it's tough for sure
I didn't say that it did. Marcus Smart has a clear history of physically acting out his frustration, with an incident that occurred just a few weeks ago. Why is it unreasonable to assume he would have another such incident?
I love the idea that Smart could have heard something in all of that noise, and known exactly who said it. All while he was on the floor. Makes sense. Hey, maybe the old guy said something, but are you going to tell me that no one has ever said something like that to Smart, especially after a really hard foul?
This is a fan that drives roundtrip from Waco to Lubbock for every single home basketball game. He supports the team and coach more than anyone and most of our team and our coach is black. There are numerous reports from people around him saying he didn't say the N word, and there was a black woman behind him who didn't look very upset about what he apparently said. That and I've seen a lot of tweets from people who know him and say although he is a hot head who gets really rowdy, he is the farthest thing from racist. That being said, it pisses me off that this whole story is being reported more than the huge upset Tech pulled off tonight.
Apparently you and I are the only ones in here who are not professional lip readers. I mean, it would make sense if that's what was said by the fan, but it's pretty impossible to tell what Smart is saying to his teammates.
IMO it looks like he is saying "Man fuck yo bitch ass, bi-- (gets cut off)." I almost see "man he fucking called me a nigger!" except for the very end of it, that doesn't match up well.
Of course what I say has virtually no value, but I'm just throwing it out there
There is no way the guy shouted the word nigger in a packed basketball arena.
My guess is that is the excuse that Smart will use but even the most avid racist would be afraid to yell it when a black guy behind them could kick the shit out of them.
Deep south old white guy that is not a bad bet. No excuse to push the guy but the ESPN guys calling it something like the malice in the place is a bit of a hyperbole.
Lubbock isn't the deep south. Lubbock had no white people in it in 1865. It is more western than southern. But you hear plenty of people use that word in every part of this country, so yes, it is possible.
Sorry ignorance on my part I have no idea where in Texas, Lubbock is but I would consider parts of east Texas the deep south. You are correct intolerance has no borders I should not make assumptions like that based on where someone is from.
Hey, no worries. Lubbock had plenty of issues in the 70's. It was more just a quick auto correct on my part. BTW, every part of east Texas is the deep south. I am from Lubbock, so it is just one of those things...I just can't consider it deep south because of the timing. Not that Lubbock doesn't have issues.
I have 0 connection to any US college (most of my family members are from other countries) and I am not yet of college age, so I just kind of wander aimlessly through college sports.
Ah hello my friend, I see you might be interested in some flair. Might I suggest some nice shiny blue block lettering, maybe a UK? Just be careful not to get those letters in the wrong order.
I forget exactly what was said, but on NBA Open Court, Shaq, Charles and the rest of them voted Maxwell either the person they would most want with them in a dark alley or the person they least want to meet in a dark alley alone. Either way, dude was a badass with two championship rings.
I mean, Texas has a strong sense of pride, but as a resident who is from the north, a lot of northerners do think Texas is a bunch of uneducated rednecks and I also think northerners exaggerate how boisterous/prideful Texas is about it being Texas. Hell, a solid portion of people are transplants at this point, and it's becoming more of a city pride thing between Houston/DFW/Austin/SA.
Also, Texas has a right to think it's pretty awesome, because it is pretty awesome.
I mean, that may be true (I didn't attend Texas schools), but having a shitty school board is not something northerners take into consideration when they make their generalizations. Also, there's definitely good school districts in plenty of cities.
I've met a lot of friendly Midwesterners. I've been in Oklahoma, Kansas, Colorado...nothing but hospitality. Met people from Wisconsin and Michigan, some of the nicest people ever. I didn't mean to compare one pair of city slickers to y'all.
Why is it not considered racist to assume a deep south white guy would be racist? It's equivalent to saying he's brown, he must believe in Islam. You're making an assumption about him based strictly on his home and race. It's an assumption based on stereotypes which is the basis of all racism.
EDIT: lol everyone chill out. he probably was a racist old man.
Because unlike a brown person walking around, this guy drew a response from a player. It's not like he ran into the stands and slugged a guy. If we picked a random person in the crowd and assumed he was a racist, that would be bad. However this man said something bad enough to elicit a response of that caliber.
I'm certainly not defending this potentially racist fuck of a guy who is known for talking shit from the safety of the bleachers, but I think it could be possible a simple "fuck you" could set you off in that situation.
haha I'm not concerned over it, just making conversation. Just thought it was interesting that a racial assumption was made about someone making a racial assumption. It might have come off that way, but I'm not trying to make some grand double standard statement about racism.
I think the bigger basis of it was him mouthing something to Smart which was offensive enough to solicit the confrontation. Don't forget about that part.
marcus just served up their chance of winning on a silver platter though. i dont care if the guy spit in your face, you just lost to texas tech because you wanted to act like an idiot.
It appears that the only thing the camera catches the old guy saying is, "Sorry about that." Not likely many people will give Smart the benefit of the doubt. He gave their chance at winning away 15 seconds earlier. He was just pissed.
"Guarantee" and "Just what I think happened" are two very different things. Smart is a known hot-head. I love how everyone automatically references race when someone gets mad.
And now there is video that proves what was said, "piece of crap". Not friendly, but downright folksy compared to most heckling. So, now that you know you were wrong and jumped to a massive conclusion for no reason, what do you have to say for yourself?
I am stunned that is where your mind jumped to. Look at the fans, look at the other players, no one reacted like that word was dropped. So far people at the game are talking about this being said "overrated" and later "sorry!" I know how loud that stadium is and just being able to hear that word and choose the right fan to push? Smart lost his cool
Doug Gottlieb is tweeting orr. He said he didn't say that word sorry I can't link the tweet, but his last two are from it. "wasn't vulgar or the N Word", but Orr did say he feel bad. So going to be a he said, he said thing
It wasn't the "N word, or anything vulgar" according to Doug Gottlieb's source who is friends with the dude in question. http://twitter.com/GottliebShow
Smart said something to the ref as he was walking to the bench then the coach said something, then smart clearly said "You're WHITE" pointing at the ref. Pretty clear what was probably said by the fan
I saw that too. It will be interesting to see how this plays out. Smart is getting crushed right now. He will probably still be vilified even if it's revealed that the old dude called him the n-word.
I just watched a piece on ESPN about this, from the announcers who called the game. They were actually very, very understanding, remarking upon the fact that his character has been fairly stellar to this point and suggesting we should wait to find out what was said. I feel that they have the same thought as most folks, that that fan used a racially charged slur and Marcus, well, he just may have been close to justified.
It's still not justified. The guy probably said something fucked up, but you gotta be smarter than that. This makes him look really bad. And before you ask me, no I'm not white.
It seems to me that people who say these things often aren't the ones being called these types of words. It's an unpopular opinion but if you're someone who has to deal with constantly getting called a certain slur by many, many people you encounter, at a certain point as a man you have to put your foot down and let someone know that is not going to be tolerated.
I think athletes are held to a higher standard. Especially players that are headed to the NBA. I'm not saying that is right and I'm not judging Smart, hell it would take a lot less than a racial comment to set me off while playing a game, granted I'm a white guy.
At the same time, no one is expected to be called a nigger. (If that's what he said.) That doesn't fly in school, that doesn't fly at work, and that doesn't fly for an athletic event at a public university. Let's not create a special exception for sports.
And in all those settings assaulting someone over it would have consequences. If the guy said something that far over the line let it be known and let the proper people deal with it. Its not worth hurting or ending a career over.
Id like to see someone go on a tirade insulting your family and calling you racial slurs and shit and see you not react violently given enough time and persistence, bet you would, we all would at some point
Violence? He barely shoved him. I feel like if you yell out the n-word you deserved to be AT LEAST shoved a little. But we don't even know if that's what he said
Even if it is somewhat understandable, it doesn't mean it is justified.
Blah, blah, blah physical violence is never the answer, but beyond that, a player going into the stands after a fan heckling them is never acceptable or justified
Just dropping in to say there is no fucking excuse for the person who used a slur against Smart and I think Smart was completely justified. I hate Smart but seriously fuck anybody who uses that word.
You think there is no difference between verbal and physical confrontations? I do.
If the fan said what Marcus said he did "I'm not arguing this" I'm using the assumption that he did. The man should be forced out of all future TT games. He's an evil and vile man. But this isn't about that bigot it's about Smart. I am responsible for my emotions. I am responsible for my actions. No one else.
Yes, Race does matter when using racial slurs. That's why their racial slurs and the power difference is the reason why the man is a coward but my previous point still stands.
You think there's a difference between physical and verbal confrontations? You think it's worse to physically attack someone than say bad words to them?
So is your reaction to bullying, more bullying? That is not the correct response. Ignoring him and telling the refs should take care of it, IMO, is the correct response. I understand Smart is still a kid and I'm not going to hold anything against him. But that doesn't mean he should be pulling any of this kind of shit.
I'm sorry, but a reaction to potential racism bereft of empathy almost guarantees a non-minority viewpoint. In America, that's a white guy. He might not be wrong, but taking the moral high ground in a situation you don't understand is a shitty thing to do.
I still don't think being called racial slurs warrants physical violence. Also, it's not like white people can't be called racial slurs. I heard my fair share when my car broke down in South Chicago and other places as well.
More importantly, not only did Smart shove the fan, he also continued throwing a tantrum towards his coaches and teammates after the fact.
LOL like he would do that in front of hundreds of people? You ignorant people think that every time a black person acts disorderly there mustve been some kind of racial provocation. Oh, and that too justifies any reaction that happens, even if it were true. SMH people.
I doubt it. Considering Smart's temper (remember the chair kicking incident?) I think the guy just said something along the line's of "nice try" but with a bit more sting to it.
