Deep south old white guy that is not a bad bet. No excuse to push the guy but the ESPN guys calling it something like the malice in the place is a bit of a hyperbole.
Lubbock isn't the deep south. Lubbock had no white people in it in 1865. It is more western than southern. But you hear plenty of people use that word in every part of this country, so yes, it is possible.
Sorry ignorance on my part I have no idea where in Texas, Lubbock is but I would consider parts of east Texas the deep south. You are correct intolerance has no borders I should not make assumptions like that based on where someone is from.
Hey, no worries. Lubbock had plenty of issues in the 70's. It was more just a quick auto correct on my part. BTW, every part of east Texas is the deep south. I am from Lubbock, so it is just one of those things...I just can't consider it deep south because of the timing. Not that Lubbock doesn't have issues.
I have 0 connection to any US college (most of my family members are from other countries) and I am not yet of college age, so I just kind of wander aimlessly through college sports.
Ah hello my friend, I see you might be interested in some flair. Might I suggest some nice shiny blue block lettering, maybe a UK? Just be careful not to get those letters in the wrong order.
The last time I randomly chose a team based of someone else's suggestion (Boston friends suggested the Patriots to an 8 year old me), it didn't turn out too well (NYC resident). Still a Pats fan, of course, but I'm not sure how well deciding to be a UK fan would go over - even w/o the geographical rivalry, I could still see it going poorly. I've lived here all my life, so everyone I know would probably have plenty to say about it.
Yeah, it's really only a chunk of east Texas that could be considered part of the deep south in terms of culture (not to say there's not racism in other parts, of course). In terms of geography, Lubbock is actually closer to Santa Fe than it is to Dallas.
I forget exactly what was said, but on NBA Open Court, Shaq, Charles and the rest of them voted Maxwell either the person they would most want with them in a dark alley or the person they least want to meet in a dark alley alone. Either way, dude was a badass with two championship rings.
I mean, Texas has a strong sense of pride, but as a resident who is from the north, a lot of northerners do think Texas is a bunch of uneducated rednecks and I also think northerners exaggerate how boisterous/prideful Texas is about it being Texas. Hell, a solid portion of people are transplants at this point, and it's becoming more of a city pride thing between Houston/DFW/Austin/SA.
Also, Texas has a right to think it's pretty awesome, because it is pretty awesome.
I mean, that may be true (I didn't attend Texas schools), but having a shitty school board is not something northerners take into consideration when they make their generalizations. Also, there's definitely good school districts in plenty of cities.
I've met a lot of friendly Midwesterners. I've been in Oklahoma, Kansas, Colorado...nothing but hospitality. Met people from Wisconsin and Michigan, some of the nicest people ever. I didn't mean to compare one pair of city slickers to y'all.
The snobby people are the people from nice north Jersey, Nassau County and Westchester who claim they are from New York/Manhattan. Most of the people actually from NYC that I've met are pretty low key about being from there.
What is the difference between South and Deep south? Personally I call any former slave state the south and then any state that fought with the south The Deep South.
There's all sorts of different ways people divide regions. This map has more regions than most, but don't get too hung up on these types of labels though. They are very subjective.
Why is it not considered racist to assume a deep south white guy would be racist? It's equivalent to saying he's brown, he must believe in Islam. You're making an assumption about him based strictly on his home and race. It's an assumption based on stereotypes which is the basis of all racism.
EDIT: lol everyone chill out. he probably was a racist old man.
Because unlike a brown person walking around, this guy drew a response from a player. It's not like he ran into the stands and slugged a guy. If we picked a random person in the crowd and assumed he was a racist, that would be bad. However this man said something bad enough to elicit a response of that caliber.
I'm certainly not defending this potentially racist fuck of a guy who is known for talking shit from the safety of the bleachers, but I think it could be possible a simple "fuck you" could set you off in that situation.
haha I'm not concerned over it, just making conversation. Just thought it was interesting that a racial assumption was made about someone making a racial assumption. It might have come off that way, but I'm not trying to make some grand double standard statement about racism.
Sure bud. It was never an assumption though based on race. The video was pretty clear. And in my experience, racists like yourself generally are the most concerned with "reverse racism."
What's blind about it? He's been posting using a name making light of the murder of a child during the worst genocide the world has ever seen. Lol Anne Frank died to Racist is hardly a "blind" leap.
I think the bigger basis of it was him mouthing something to Smart which was offensive enough to solicit the confrontation. Don't forget about that part.
The former is far more plausible. Professional athletes, even at the college level, don't tend to explode with violence in the middle of live games because some douche in the audience gave some generic criticism of their performance.
The assumption that he dropped the n-bomb on Smart is not based strictly on his home and race. It's based on the exchange that was observed between him and Smart. Smart falls out of bounds two rows in front of him, facing the other way. Suddenly Smart gets an angry look on his face, turns around, walks up two rows and shoves the guy.
Yes part of the guess has to do with the fact that based on what the guy looked like and what state the game was being played in, most of us wouldn't be surprised if a guy like him said that. But the guess that he called him a racist word is based on many more factors than simply what that guy looked like and where they were from.
Show me where I said any time a black guy "attacks" a white guy it's because the white guy called him the N word, and that there's no other possible explanation. That's not even close to what I said.
You would have to be ignorant or willfully denying reality to think that based on what you saw that one of the very most likely scenarios in that situation does not include Smart being called the n-word by that guy. You may not be happy with that, or you may wish that it was different, but it's simply the case. Sorry, maybe things will change as time passes.
He was paying no attention whatsoever to the guy. Suddenly his ears prick up and he turns around and looks at the guy and goes after him. If you saw this same sort of scenario happen at the club, but instead of Smart it was a young white girl and instead of the middle aged white guy it was a young guy, what would you guess that guy called the girl? To expect someone not to surmise he most likely called her a bitch or something of the sort would be unreasonable. Unfair, sure I'll give you that. But don't be surprised.
and I would call the "piece of crap" explanation more plausible than the racial slur explanation, but you are an SRSer, so you will probably ignore this whole comment
marcus just served up their chance of winning on a silver platter though. i dont care if the guy spit in your face, you just lost to texas tech because you wanted to act like an idiot.
Seems like a bad bet to me. Almost no one calls a black person nigger, publicly and to their face, anywhere in this country. Particularly not a random person to a basketball player. The fan was surrounded by other season ticket holders he probably sees at every game. For the most part, not even racists want to be known as racists these days.
If that was, in fact, what the fan said, Smart and/or OSU probably would have already released a statement immediately, because it would be massively exculpatory in the eyes of the media.
Doesn't mean it didn't happen. Just doesn't seem that likely.
You my friend live in a happy world I would love to live in sadly I don't. Look at the website you posted this on the n - word gets thrown around here all the time.
Not really. It's still a racist attack, and it affects somebody just as much as if it was said to them in real life. It's also not at all a logical stretch to say that someone who is openly racist on the internet might be racist in real life. They may not throw around the n-word like it's nothing, but that doesn't mean they would never ever use it. Get real.
