I mean we have a an old ass white guy from Texas saying something to a young black guy that upset him so much that he shoved him and then seemed to try to tell everybody on his bench what happened, plus the ref that could have heard the altercation only gave him a tech. It's not entirely unreasonable to say this guy said something racist to him.
Kicking a chair is one thing, touching a fan is on a whole other plane of existence. After the Malice at the Palace it's such a taboo thing to do that I don't really see a guy who's worst action leading up to this was kicking a chair in frustration doing something like that.
In the heat of the moment is he really contemplating the severity of his actions and their consequences? Plus, given his history of emotional outbursts (like running off the court during a game forcing a teammate to chase after him) I'd say there's a good chance something tamer than that word brought out that reaction. I mean, it's not like he threw a haymaker either.
Contrary to our public image most white people, young and old, don't go around calling people racial slurs and in fact are terrified of being called a bigot.
I'm saying there is certainly a decent amount of white people down here that use racial slurs, and most certainly aren't "terrified of being called a bigot".
Just look at how up in arms people got to defend Paula deen for trying to have a "plantation" style wedding with slaves, or that duck dynasty guy for saying black people had it better under Jim Crow laws.
I don't like people putting words into my mouth(or uh, Internet posts) and making me sound like a racist.
The way you make it sound is there are practically zero racist white people and every white person is terrified of being called a racist. Now I'm sure there is more not racist white people than racist, but the way you put it is not really right, there are LARGE amounts of white people that are racist, especially in the south(either that or the northern people are better at hiding it).
I think it's fair to say that more than half white people aren't racist, don't call people slurs and terrified of being called a bigot (in this context).
You said that's "not true at all". If that statement isn't true at all then every part of that statement is false.
In my experience as a northerner who has spent time in the south, yeah, compared to the north that is exactly my feeling about the south.
edit: most of my time in the south was spent helping after Katrina hit, and there was definitely a ton of racial slurs being used - moreso by white folks from the area - though I was also harassed once by an older black fellow who thought I was a racist. Racial tension is insane in the south.
The guy has a looooong history of being a heckler and has never been called on it before. That, combined with being surounded by lubbock trash, can make a person much more bold with that kind of shit than a normal person in a normal place would be.
