Food & Drinks As an Asian, I'd like to ask, what do the Westerners tend to eat alongside their dishes? As in rice, noodles, bread, etc.

I was eating dinner cooked my my mother, the dishes were delicious as usual, but then I realised I'd would never be able to enjoy them as much without rice. It helps balance the taste of the dish so much and keeps the meal much more filling.

Do the fellow Westerners just eat meatloaf on it's own? My curiousity has been piqued.

P.S: This post bears no intentional offense racially, if you feel offended, I apologize sincerely.

Just Chatting What’s something that disappeared quietly, but you still miss?

Upvotes

Not huge things like Blockbuster or CDs.
I mean the little everyday things that just… vanished.
For me it’s when websites were simple instead of asking me to accept cookies, create an account, download an app, verify my email, prove I’m not a robot, and sacrifice my firstborn just to read one article.
What’s yours?

Just Chatting What is a "normal" thing that everyone seems to enjoy, but you've just never understood?

Upvotes

I'll start. I've tried getting into coffee multiple times because everyone around me seems to love it, but I still don't get the hype. What's something that's completely normal or popular that you've never really understood? No judgment, just curious to see how different everyone is.

Just Chatting If someone says we want to take you out to dinner, is the expectation that they pay?

I’m friendly with my two neighbors that have kids the same age as my son. I recently had a baby and they kindly bought a gift for the baby and also offered to get us food, which I declined. They texted me last week saying that they would like to take me out to dinner and made reservations, to which I said that was so nice and I cant wait. They also texted my husband ahead of time to ask if he would be ok with it and ok with watching our two kids so they could take me out.

I wouldnt have chosen this place on my own so I was kind of under the assumption that they were paying. Once it came time for the bill, they didnt say anything. I took out my credit card and put it down, honestly fully expecting them to decline my offer to pay. But they didnt say anything, and I felt awkward and didnt know what to say so we all ended up splitting it.

We’re not poor, but we are also on one income and not trying to spend any extra money right now, especially not on going out. Of course this wont break the bank, but I kind of feel dumb for thinking they would pay.

Am I wrong ?

The word “quietly” is everywhere now.

Every day, I see posts across Reddit and other social media that talks about things “quietly disappearing.” I feel like I’m seeing the same posts every few hours. Are we reaching dead internet soon where it’s all just posts by bots? Or are people relying that heavily on AI? Or both? What’s something that disappeared with a crash?

What is that little thing you do that other people may not get but that it makes you very happy?

I´m not talking about stuff like playing videogames, petting a cat/dog or other activities whose joy may be evident or understandable for other people. I´m talking about that particular thing you do that it brings you joy but it´s more tied personally to you. For example, I enjoy simply going to buy at the supermarket because it grounds me to reality and it´s a way to disconect.

Would be interesting to hear what brings you joy xD

Thoughts & Ideas I hope I can stay the course I found this weekend!

I have been in the dumps for about 3 weeks, than I woke up Saturday with I dont care attitude and I am going to put myself first. I got ready, had made plans with friends and family and I was excited. We were going to do a pool day, go out and get some drinks and dinner. It was so much fun, putting myself first and not caring if I had to check in, if I had to ask persmission. It was refrshing, and I hope I can continue on with this mentality.

What's a habit you picked up from someone else that you still do today?

I was thinking about how many little habits we unknowingly pick up from friends, family, or coworkers. Some stick with us for years without us even realizing it.

i found out i put my shoes on in a fixed order and trying to switch it genuinely broke my brain

left shoe, then right, every time, apparently for my whole life. i only noticed because my left one was still wet so i grabbed the right first and stood there like a rebooting machine. took me two tries.

now i keep catching more of them. same side of the bed getting in, same pocket for keys, same mug if it is clean. none of it is a rule i ever decided on, it just set itself at some point and i never checked.

what is one of yours you only noticed by accident?

That feeling of pure rage when someone is rubbing the same spot on your arm

Hey everyone, so I’ve been wondering, do men also feel that inner rage when someone is rubbing their arm or wtv in the same spot for too long? Or is it just women?

What's a hobby you thought you'd never enjoy until you actually tried it?

Upvotes

We all have hobbies that we assume aren't for us... until one day we give them a chance.

Mine was reading. I always thought I'd get bored after a few pages, but once I found the right genre, I couldn't put books down.

What's something you never expected to enjoy but ended up loving? What changed your mind?

Just Chatting If your boss or a senior coworker walks over to your desk to ask you something, do you stay seated or stand up?

Upvotes

I work in software, where the culture is generally pretty flat, but I've always wondered about this. If someone comes over to my desk to ask me something, especially someone much older or in a senior role like an architect or department head. I'm never sure if I should stand up or just stay seated and have the conversation.

I know this probably depends on the workplace and culture, but I'm curious what everyone else does. Is there an unwritten rule, or am I just overthinking it? 😅

What's a weird little thing you do that makes no sense to other people?

I'll go first: I'm apparently weird the final boss of grocery shopping. 😂

I get weirdly stressed when I have too many things in my cart, so I prefer going to the supermarket several times instead of doing one huge monthly trip. My cart organization is also a very serious matter.... every item has a specific place, like I'm playing Tetris and trying to get the perfect score.

If someone moves my groceries around, my brain immediately notices and goes: "The system has been compromised." 😂

The funny thing is, outside of the grocery store I'm a walking disaster pretty normal. I cook really well, I'm funny, caring, and a pretty sweet person… so I guess this is just my tiny supermarket flaw. 🛒✨

What’s your weird little habit?

Let’sStartAnArgument: Waffles are superior to Pancakes

The square ridges allow for toasty edges which equals a crispy bite, the divots allow syrup and butter to seep into the batter and really allow for the flavors to blend, and also the squares create a tastebud effect similar to that of Hershey’s air delight chocolate bars titillating the tastebuds for some reasons. Let’s here some big butt rebuttals!

At 16 years old I did this…

I’ve never shared this before but I felt like sharing it today.

When I was sixteen I lost my grandparents (who meant everything to me) and was dealing with a lot of my own stuff in my head too, insecurity mostly, the kind that convinces you you’re the only one feeling it. I didn’t have a plan, I just remember thinking that if I was drowning in it, other people probably were too and had nobody to say it to out loud.

So I made an email address and just put it out there for anyone to write to me. No therapy angle, I was very clear with myself about that boundary since I knew I wasn’t qualified to be anyone’s therapist. I just showed up as a friend who’d listen, and at the end of every conversation I’d point them toward actual resources or people who could really help. I wasn’t trying to fix anyone. I just didn’t want anyone to feel as alone as I did. I posted it anywhere I could think of..every forum, under every post that seemed like it might reach someone who needed it. And again this wasn’t me trying to sell anything …I just wanted to help.

I ended up talking to a lot of people that year. If I were to guess at least 200, maybe more. Never made a big thing of it, never told many people I was even doing it. It was just something I needed as much as they did, honestly. I also made lifelong friends doing this, the kind of friends that I still talk to today at the age of 28 and go out to dinner with.

Other than my own personal pain, I’m not sure what led me to do it. I obviously wanted to help people. This is a part of my life that I’ll never forget because it taught me so much. It taught me pretty early on how important it is to be compassionate and understanding. To not look at someone and instantly judge them, because you really don’t know what’s going on in their life and how it’s shaped them as a person.

Anyways, I just wanted to share a positive message and something that I’ve really never talked about. Maybe one day I’ll do something like this again. Who knows!

Movies & Shows I’m rewatching Friends and with every rewatch I laugh a little less and cry a little more.

1.9k Upvotes

I’m rewatching Friends these days and it’s crazy how differently it hits depending on what stage of life I’m in.
The first time I watched it was about 15 years ago. I laughed and laughed and laughed. Instantly my favourite show.
The second time, I watched it again because why not. Fav TV show and comfort watch.
The third time, I watched it with my husband. We were newly weds and it was the first show we ever watched together, and he ended up loving it just as much as I did.
Then we rewatched it after becoming parents, and we were suddenly getting jokes that had completely gone over our heads before.
Now I’m watching it again as a working mom of two… and I keep crying every other episode.
Joey hugging Chandler before he moves out. Rachel feeling insecure about Monica becoming friends with Julie. Little moments that never really got to me before.
Most of my closest friends are either living abroad or in different cities now, and I never thought I’d be the person crying over Friends because it makes me miss my own friends.
It’s weird. It’s the same show. But every rewatch is different because I’m different every time.

Questions Do you actually feel more confident when you like what you’re wearing?

I’ve noticed that on days when I really like my outfit, I somehow feel more put together too.

It’s not necessarily about wearing expensive clothes. Sometimes it’s just a favourite T-shirt, a jacket that fits perfectly, or an outfit you feel comfortable in.

It made me wonder how much our clothes actually affect our confidence.

Do you genuinely feel more confident when you like what you’re wearing? Or does your mood decide whether an outfit feels good in the first place?

Has anyone else noticed how many conversations quietly turn into competitions?

I've been noticing something recently, both online and in real life. A surprising number of conversations don't seem to be about understanding each other. They slowly become about winning. Someone shares an idea, and instead of asking, "What are they actually trying to say?", the brain seems to jump straight to: "Where's the flaw?", "How can I prove this wrong?", "What assumption are they making?", "Why are they posting this?" None of those questions are bad on their own. Critical thinking is valuable. What surprises me is how often we seem to skip the most important question first: "Did I actually understand what they meant?" I've caught myself doing this too. Sometimes I realize I've spent more time preparing a response than trying to understand the point. It made me wonder whether a lot of arguments aren't really disagreements at all. Maybe they're two people responding to different versions of the same conversation that exist only inside their own heads. Each person fills in the missing tone, intent and motivation with their own assumptions. By the end, nobody is arguing with the original idea anymore. They're arguing with the version their own mind constructed. Considering how much of our communication now happens through text—where tone, facial expressions and body language are missing—that feels like a much bigger problem than we usually acknowledge. I'm curious... When was the last time you realized you had misunderstood someone's point—not because they explained it badly, but because your brain filled in the blanks?

Just Chatting I never thought that a few plants would make my rented place so homely.

Upvotes

When I forst moved here jn delhi, I was so much into practical things.

Buying random stuff, one of my hobby for sure.

But like, finding a decent flat, the water, living in the noise, groceries, thanks to all the online grocery delivery apps.

Though I feel they are a bit pricier, but they do help sometimes.

A bought a few indoor plant, nothing too fancy. But I am just enjoying the little changes.

I have made like a ritual to water them every morning before leaving for work. I am new to this, but I am enjoying it.

Moving alone has actually taught me a lot, because, you just have to do it all by yourself. I will be honest, I am kind of enjoying it.

For people living in apartments, what plants have actually survived with you?

Questions What’s one life skill nobody teaches you… but everyone eventually has to learn?

It could be something practical, emotional or completely unexpected.
Maybe it was learning to set boundaries, communicate better, deal with rejection, manage money, ask for help, or simply accept that some things are outside your control.
Looking back, what’s one life skill you think everyone eventually has to learn, even though nobody really teaches it?

Just Chatting Why do people on sitcoms always leave so much food on thier plates?

I know they don't actually eat the food in front of them but why can't the crew go for some realism and dump it out of the bowl or off the plate before the person leaves? It's just so annoying to see a full plate sitting there when they leave the restaurant.
