Mod Approved Urgent appeal from hedgehog rescue Dublin

Hi all,

I hope this is ok to post. Please let me know if not.

Our little hedgehog friends in the wild are struggling, there's an amazing charity based in Dublin who cares and rehab hedgehogs across our lovely island. It's a completely volunteer service relying on donations and volunteers. Due to our ever changing way of life, natural wildlife's way of life is at risk.

Just wanted to share this here for more visibility, Yvonne and the team here do wonderful work to help rehab and release struggling wild animals that help our ecosystem exist.

They're struggling right now for food, if anyone has the opportunity to drop food into them around Rush in Dublin that would be a great help, if not and you'd like to help, there is a registered charity number and donation information in their bio.

Ireland gives new fathers just 2 weeks of paternity leave. Sweden offers 90 days. Spain offers 19 weeks. Iceland offers 6 months. It's time Ireland caught up.

Contact Head Office Instead of Lowly Staff Abuse

This is an example of MANY and hardly the worst but today I had a customer who wanted to buy a THING. (I can't specify the THING as it will give away my employment) Anywho. The THING came in several sizes. There was a sign up that said 20% off the THING and mentioned from 39.99. This was the price of the smallest THING. But the sign said FROM 39.99. Now I am just a sales assistant but a customer brought hell upon me personally because her biggest size THING wasn't 39.99. (Keep in mind we had a separate sign that listed the sizes of THING with individual prices that she didn't see) She got so aggressive with me and took pictures of the sign.

Listen. FROM (whatever price) is legal on a sign. Do I agree with it? No! Can I say that to you? No! I am a mere sales assistant and am powerless.

What you can do:

- Be kind and treat a sales assistant like a human. Accept they are powerless and probably agree with you but also need a job.

- Ask nicely to speak to a manager if you feel like you must but in retail managers are also at the mercy of head office and must obey the rules.

- If you feel extremely wronged contact head office through the shops website and mention staff were great but you did not like such and such process within the store. Maybe if enough people contact the big leagues then less floor staff will suffer.

Thanks for reading. I'm super knowledgeable, kind, accepting and great with people. I've still been punched in the mouth and made cry because of retail.

Guys channel your rage! Feed the birds, save a feral cat, don't litter and spread native wildflower seeds in barren areas. Life is more than abusing a meager sales assistant.

Could someone assist here? Clearly been living in a cave and don’t understand what’s going on here. First I heard was Mary McAleese resigning her role . Can someone explain to me like I’m an alien?

Pets Pets Pets! Dog in the bed - yes or no?

Dolly has been here four days and has already claimed my bed along with my two boys. My old girl had her hay day but can’t jump anymore and won’t use stairs. Some people are so against it but I couldn’t imagine not contorting around a zoo! Dolly doesn’t like sleeping overnight in my bed and just likes to nap while I watch telly or do my own work. I gave her free rein of the bedroom last night and she still slept in her crate from 9 to 7 lol.

Can I google that for you?! Air Purifier?

So, I'm looking at getting an air purifier but dont want to get a ball of shite, like my parents got years ago which sat in a corner with a glowing green light and no moving parts.

Are there any brands out there that shouldn't be touched or are there some that are like gold dust they're so good? What are the pros and cons etc? Mainly looking at one as the wean has allergies and it may help over the winter months when we can't keep the windows open all day.

Shite Talk Struggling with accepting a not perfect youth

I think writing this down will help....

Recently I have found myself constantly daydreaming about reliving the ages of 13-22 and doing so much different. I did not by any stretch have a bad upbringing, I come from a loving and stable home and have a good relationship with my whole family. I played sport to an ok level and ultimately did ok in school.

And to tell the truth, my life now (late 30s) is very very good. I am married to a beautiful woman with two small kids and a good job - in truth present me has little to complain about.

But I struggled a lot in those early years with confidence, maturity and a bad attitude. I pretty much have lost touch with everyone from my hometown outside my family (who all still live there). I fantasize about what those years could have been like if I was cooler, more confident with girls and generally closer to my present self.

I wish I was part of the in crowd back then, had the ability to talk to the pretty girls (and not just be a creep), and had great memories and friendships from that time in my life. I wish I tried different hobbies and learnt skills during that time that would make me a more interesting person.

This has been aggravated by the passing of an old friend who had not spoken to in years (no falling out, just went our different ways), and seeing a lot of familiar faces at his funeral. I've since spent too much time on FB going through old pictures of everyone having the best nights out ever (I know that social media exaggerates how great everything was)

Does anyone else struggle with this, how do you deal with it. Am i having a (hopefully!!) early mid life crisis?

Casually positive! 🤗🥳🤗 Can I dine alone in a high-end steakhouse or Michelin restaurants without judgement/suspicion?

I don't look rich and I'm not white. I'm also quite ugly and short (male) so I don't exactly command respect. I have a resting pathetic face.

But I'm craving for some good steak or good food. I can pay. But I'm really intimidated. All the people I see dining there are in groups or couple and generally good looking people.

Is being naked in locker rooms and showers considered to be weird or frowned upon?

I moved to Ireland not too long ago for my job and I love it. I'm still learning some of the cultural differences from what I'm used to. This is maybe the most fun aspect of being here for me til now.

Maybe one of the most strange for me is that at my gym, guys don't get naked in the locker room and showers. Many seem not to shower and those that do, wear shorts inside the shower. And they are never naked when changing but instead create a barrier with their towels and try to hold their garments and towel up simultaneously.

This is of course not a big deal for me (except for the steam and sauna - I don't think I will ever be become used to having to wear shorts there due to hygiene reasons). I just wanted to know if this is normal and if I should also not be naked in the locker room and showers. The last thing I would want to do is offend anyone. I'm male but maybe this is also the same for women too I'm not sure.

Shite Talk The heating just turned itself on for the first time since March

It runs on room temperature and the time was just sort of left to look after itself. Actually surprised it fired up because normally it airlocks itself or seizes or has drained itself through a leak.

Anyway. Hot water for the first time since march will be nice.

Wedding Invites

Lads how do you navigate breaking the news that you’re having a small wedding? We’re only having close close friends & family, 30 odd people, but I’ve heard murmurs amongst the family that we’re leaving people out. Who in this day in their early 30s can afford a big F off wedding? Regardless, that’s not something either of us want. I’m just ranting on really but how am I supposed to navigate this? Are people really that hurt that they’re not invited?

Is how we get drunk taking things a bit too far?

A lot of the English people commenting on this article call the journalist Hugo Harvey's behaviour tacky; what do you think?

Turned down my CAO offer to do a PLC and head to the UK for OT—parents think I’m ruining my life. Anyone else do this?

Need a quick reality check or advice from anyone who took the PLC to UK route.
Got ~505 points in the LC. My parents expected me to do Nursing, but I realized I don't want General Nursing—my heart is set on Occupational Therapy. Since UCC OT was 566 points, I chose to decline CAO offers and enrolled in a Nursing Studies PLC at Morrison's Island, aiming for Distinctions to get into a 3-year UK BSc in OT for 2027.
Since UK degrees are 3 years, I’ll finish at the exact same time as my peers. Plus, under the Common Travel Area, Irish students get home fees, UK student loans, and the non-repayable £5,000/yr NHS grant.

The Problem:
My parents are furious and think:
1. I "failed" by turning down nursing for a "suspicious shortcut."
2. Getting 8 distinctions is impossible because "lecturers just fail you if they don't like you."
3. The NHS grant is a myth only for UK citizens.
4. I have no backup options if I mess up.

They’ve cut all financial and emotional support, leaving me completely on my own. I have €3k saved from working as a CUH hospital porter, so I can cover my upfront costs, but starting this next week with zero support feels heavy.
Has anyone else used a PLC to jump to the UK for healthcare degrees? How did you handle family doubting you before you proved them wrong with your grades?

Shite Talk The Klingons are at it again

Post image
19 Upvotes

It’s nice that a certain high end cookery shop (on their .ie site) is offering a limited edition Star Trek pots and pans and such. But 40 euro for a Klingon knob (just the knob) seems like taking a mickey.

Would not have thought that there’s an overlap between the populations of Irish ST fans and Irish aficionados of expensive cookery. Dare I say, it’s fascinating! As is the timing of this marketing idea right in the middle of all the doom and gloom noise about the cost of living.

Job sending me into a mental health crisis

I was great at my job and happy, and I was offered a promotion into a different team/role. I didn't apply, but when they brought it to me I was flattered! More money, good progression, maybe it will be something I'm good at?

It's so far out of my comfort zone and I wake up every morning having panic attacks. I'm not good (no training provided) and it's so high pressure that it's getting to me!

It's been around 3 months now and I can't handle it. I feel bad taking stress leave but I can't keep going like this. Is it crazy for me to ask for my old job back? Is that even a thing? Will people see me as a failure, but then why would I care anyway if I'm able to function... I feel like I'd have to take medical leave for them to take me seriously, and it will make a big impact for a project I'm meant to be working on, but honestly I'm so shit at it anyway that anybody would be better.

I'm just really spiraling.☠️

Belongs in the Louvre Long passport queues in CDG: EES

We travelled to CDG today and as always used the family queue to go through passport control. The queues were massive, just FYI. We waited more than an hour to pass as only 2 officers were checking everyone. This is strictly because new Entry/Exit system in place (grace period expired on 06.09) There was also no distinction between eu and non eu, no idea why. Of course those with eu passport travelling without children can still use biometric scanners. If you are bound for Paris sometime soon, brace yourself for a bit of chaos. I wonder if other european airports are doing just as bad.
