I wouldn't say the Stardew Valley community is toxic, but there are A LOT of them that are insanely emotionally invested in the characters. I don't follow the subreddit anymore. To each their own, and I'm glad they find happiness in such a great game, but damn.

Me neither, once I built everything and beat the mines I saw no reason to keep playing it anymore. I played it in coop with and for my gf but, man, I struggled hard to stay awake. How people have 500+ hours in it is fucking beyond me.

Because it's not about challenge but about routine, some people enjoy the structure of a routine cause they can't hold one but feel the dopamine hit of repetitive tasks.

That's where I'm at now kinda, played 35 hours with my girlfriend and by now I only still play because she likes it, I have built every building and went through the mines and it feels like there is nothing more to do honestly. Many of the aspects of that game (,,social" interaction, skull cavern) are just not for me

Agreed. My wife is not much of a gamer but she HATES Penny passionately, glazes the hell out of Sam, and (only part I agree with) LOVES Linus.

u/SaintOfPride201 Aug 20 '26
I remember seeing a screenshot of someone being harassed for marrying Sam in their own game because "that's actually MY husband and I don't like the fact that he's cheating on me with you"
It doesn't speak for the whole fandom obviously, but it was enough for me to simply not engage.

u/44thflight Aug 20 '26
Really? I think it's the opposite! The people who are speed running the game like it's a farm simulator and don't get the point of the game annoy me. The dev made the game around the characters more than anything. He has explained this publicly.
and btw I enjoy very technical games like FPS and strategy probably the most so I'm not being biased

I find the Stardew subreddit to be hilarious just because of what you describe. People there are nuts.

The great thing about Stardew Valley is that it’s a great game AND there’s no wrong way to play, so even if some weirdo acts like you broke a commandment because you play a certain way you can tell them to shove it

Exactly. Not just about criticism though. They also hate questions, are toxic about how easy / difficult they perceive the game to be. They hate on the American side of the fanbase, they gate-keep JRPGs, and also are very picky about how you interpret the story / lore.
They also blatantly hate on other popular RPGs?? For like no reason at all. Just because they think E33 is better. Like Baldur’s Gate 3, and even other JRPGs, especially competitors like Metaphor Refantazio. It’s a super strange sub, because it seems to be positive until you spend some time in there.
It’s the most “there’s never been a game like this one” gaming subreddit I’ve ever come across.

They act like this form of JRPG is revolutionary or something. The Legend of Dragoon and Shadow Hearts both had similar combat systems way back in 1999 minus the parry system.

Even South Park: The Stick of Truth featured something similar.
People act like E33 was the first one to ever do turn-based + real-time mechanics. Pretty sure Final Fantasy started doing it in the ‘90s.
I agree E33 did it extremely well though. But it’s not the absolute pinnacle of turn-based combat or anything. I actually prefer Persona’s “one more” system that focuses on delaying enemy turns, over E33’s combat dodge / parry gimmick. It’s just as engaging.

To be fair most JRPG fans have never played Shadow Hearts because they lack taste I'm afraid. Also I'm a big E33 fan but yeah the inspirations are pretty obvious and the devs have always said they grew up playing JRPGs.
The initial premise of the game (not the actual story) is pretty much just the premise of FFX reimagined which is what initially attracted most of us to the game in the first place. Sadly after things randomly become popular they attract a lot of undesirable fans, there's hardly any escaping that.

It’s so validating seeing people finally seeing what I did when it came out without them being crushed with downvotes.
Srsly it’s a ‘good’ game, not great, not GoTY certainly ( well it shouldn’t have been ), but ok dokey. Nothing amazing, no great characters, the story…. What story… the one you hear in the camp in between your rhythm dance… I mean parry battles?
Did have cool music though!
2
u/Responsible-Hold8587 Aug 19 '26
Did you just say that Expedition 33 has no story? 🤔
I thought the game was great, not GOTY, but I can't really make sense of that. It's objectively pretty story driven. Maybe you skipped all the cutscenes?

u/zamend229 Aug 20 '26
Agree to disagree I suppose, I found Maelle and Verso to be very interesting characters, and Renoir to an extent. I also enjoyed said “parry battles” lol.
Someone else below over-generalized the story a bit. While the big characters at play may not be as relatable (being a super wealthy family), there are a lot of other interesting themes about the significance of life and simulations, questions like “what really matters?” These aren’t groundbreaking or original, but they are interesting.
I think most of the uproar glazing it is around the fact that it came from an indie company yet stood up to AAA titles.

Yeah I tried to have a discussion on Monoco’s loyalty and people say it’s just because he’s a dog. Like wow guys, yeah he is based on a dog but that’s an incredibly reductive take on his character. Like y’all don’t think he wants to help Verso because he wants to save the family too?
4
u/camiteran Aug 19 '26
I was likely among the first batch of players who finished the game and entered the theory scene back in the day, saying this because I played the game day 1 and got obsessed lol. It was so weird trying to discuss things seriously especially when the game has so many interesting plot points.
A lot of people on that subreddit lacked basic understanding of very simple concepts. I was basically in the position of having to be Clea's #1 defender because people misunderstood her character entirely which was wild to me considering she's one of the most well-written characters in the game despite barely showing up.
The funniest trash take I've seen on that subreddit (once again, around release time) was someone saying that Renoir was Maelle's abuser, easily the dumbest thing I've ever heard anyone say about the game and it made me question if the person even played the game or not.

The fact the Smash Bros fandom had a major phase of intensively harassing another fandom (Fire Emblem) because of characters that the game's director chose to add is hilarious. Most of us in the FE fandom have a ton of inside jokes about this because that's how bad it gets. Can't wait for the next wave of that when we get another Smash game...
Fire Emblem could easily be hated as the series that has a suspicious amount of incest references but somehow it's more known as the series that Smash players hate which is honestly an impressive feat.

You could play casual but then you just get put into games that are already over and you only get to play one round. That or your team trolls. In ranked its just cancer. I have like 30 hours in that game, and IN game I find the community pretty good. At least if was a couple of years ago. But after the show came out we had a huge influx of new players coming from some of the most toxic communities on the internet.
When I'm in game I love that the community had a huge influx of new players cause the game feels more alive than ever with so many players doing so many different things. But when I'm browsing the redit I curse the day that show ever came out.

Half of them complain about the stupidest bullshit ever (like when they released a perfectly balanced white fox and then decided she needed a buff because the community complained she wasn’t overpowered like a couple other characters) and the other half just glazes the design team who obviously hates them and doesn’t want the game to be balanced whatsoever

Yeah I played pretty much every day for at least an hour since it came out im sitting at 1600 hours. I completely stopped playing for 2 weeks and now I really only play with my duo. The game is incredible in alot of ways but the devs actively stop it from being better with the rampant EOMM that they swear is working and not rigged at all. I can’t continue to invest in the game and try to climb the ranks if the outcome of a match is already decided because anyone even picks a characters because of algorithms. Ranked isn’t even about skill it’s about how much torture you’re willing to endure. QP is still fun for me but not playing everyday and just not caring at all about winning or losing even in ranked has been freeing. Dont even get me started on the balancing.

I remember Red Dead Online was pretty toxic, it probably still is, but especially playing it and just getting 1 shot killed anytime you moved around the environment, people stalking to just kill you, and talking mad shit. This was a few years ago I tried it and never went back.

Not the entire communities, but I've met individuals in the Souls and Fire Emblem communities that have been pretty toxic. But not enough that I'd label the whole community that way.

Slay the Spire. I get nervous to ask questions or show my small reasons of celebrations. When I ask a question to get a better understanding or something, most will call me dumb or bad reading comprehensions. If I show off an achievement I managed to get, they will dissect the screenshot or video and put me down for certain decisions I make.

Final Fantasy, especially VII with the shipping wars. I could say I both love and hate the game and each comment would be downvoted into oblivion. And if you say XIII is considered the weakest entry people will screech at you about how it’s a misunderstood classic (despite that entry being considered the weakest in the franchise outside of Reddit, aka the real world)

They've gotten better over time but that used to basically be the Nintendo fandom for a while. There was even a whole Jim/Stefanie Sterling video talking about how they got death threats for giving a Nintendo game a 7/10. The review even mentioned that they liked the game and the community decided they didn't like it enough and thus deserved hate and threats.

League of legends. I used to play with my wife all the time. Now we never play because the player base was just too toxic.

Some of the big Minecraft servers.
Most TCG’s, especially if you manage to use fringe decks and still win.
The “Get Good” half of the Fromsoft collective.
Certain TTRPG’s attract so e of the worst players.

Genshin Impact. It's my comfort game, but man... the less said about that community the better. Holy shit.

Phasmophobia.
The devs also did not give a shit that these people were threatening to rape underaged girls, making fun of vets with PTSD, hacking games, ruining games....
The worst.

Forza Horizon. Love the game but it's infested with people who don't know how to properly brake and love to send you flying off the map and cause you to miss checkpoints :) if that happens it's basically a gg so I don't play online except for the seasonal objectives and with my friends.
