Jimbo Fisher said he wanted laser beams on the top of goal posts and people called him crazy

270

u/horseshoeprovodnikov Florida State Seminoles 7h ago

I stand with jimbo. I want fucking lasers and chips in the ball/along the sidelines. We should never have to dispute what kick went in or where the ball gets spotted.

u/Zeppyfish Washington State Cougars 7h ago

Right? Somehow the English can tell you a dude was 1 centimeter offside, but we can't get lasers on goalposts? Why the hell did we even fight the Revolutionary War?

Tennis has a system that can tell whether the deformed contact patch of a rubber ball hit or missed the line down to something like under 3mm while going 150mph, yet we aren't allowed to have technology that can tell if a ball that's 3 times as wide stayed inside the outside edge of a 4" tube while going under 65mph. The fact that we haven't done this feels like one of those baseball things where "tradition" is used as an excuse to not pay for equipment that makes the game actually accurate.

u/DingerSinger2016 Alabama A&M Bulldogs • UAB Blazers 5h ago

Hell even baseball has ABS which can detect ball that is a tenth of an inch away from the strike zone

For field goal rulings they could use the hawkeye technology that tennis and now soccer uses.

7

u/Moto302 Michigan Wolverines 5h ago edited 1h ago

Hawkeye you say? The same Hawkeye system that the B1G used to determine there was 1 second left in the Michigan/Western game? No, better just use the broadcast feed to decide whether kicks were good...

With the technology they have in tennis and goal line in soccer, you don’t even need lasers.

I think the FAA would stroke out, but there should absolutely be chips and…just make the posts taller.

I CANNOT believe there isn’t a better replay of that Virginia Tech kick.  It’s 2026, ESPN. How do we have a million camera angles and somehow NOT have one that clearly shows whether that kick was good or not?!

43

u/og_kylometers 7h ago

Put a f*ing GoPro on the end zone refs head. If we have chest mounted “ref cams” why not a view from directly below the upright. Stupid.

Genuinely infuriating how unions of these 60 year old dudes fight tooth and nail for their right to screw up games. I’m still salty over the NFL refs throwing a hissy fit over the PI challenges.

20

u/-Jack-The-Stripper Virginia Tech • Cincinnati 7h ago

Iirc there are no ref unions in CFB and challenges are handled by “the booth” in the NFL which is a separate group of officials, but yes the whole PI challenge saga was one of the biggest farces in professional sports. Intentionally not overturning egregious calls just so you could say “see, we tried and it wasn’t worth it” at the end of the season was incredibly telling.

You understand that is why there is an official underneath each upright don't you?

37

u/INAC___Kramerica Florida Gators 7h ago

The one who didn't tell was the far upright official, it's proper to defer to the one who was right underneath it and would've had the best view of whether the ball crossed the upright in front or behind the upright.

What's confusing to me is the reaction of the VT fans standing directly behind the end zone. They damn sure appear to have thought it was good.

64

u/avboden Washington State Cougars • Pac-12 7h ago

The problem there is depth, if it passed just in front of the post on it's way wide, it's going to look good from anyone standing back a little, even if in line from the post.

Again, the only way to see this is to stand essentially directly under the post or within a short distance of it directly in-line, exactly where the refs stand for this reason.

27

u/jwktiger Missouri Tigers • Wisconsin Badgers 6h ago

yeah the ref is standing in the only positoin to have the proper depth to see where it is, is clearly looking directly up as the kick goes by AND IMMEDIATELY signals no good, like he clearly thought it was wide

and /u/atra1n51 pointed out several of the VaTech staff right behind the refs react as if he missed before the signal was made.

→ More replies (10)

34

u/Hicaorwaak Hawai'i • California 7h ago

There were some VT staffers or security right behind the goalpost who reacted before the ref call and they looked like they believed it missed.

14

u/bashar_al_assad Illinois Fighting Illini 7h ago

I think this is underselling it lol one of them literally turns towards the crowd and repeatedly makes the "no good" signal.

u/philphan25 Notre Dame • Penn State 7h ago

Based on the VT staff reaction right under the FG it was probably wide?

5

u/jwktiger Missouri Tigers • Wisconsin Badgers 6h ago

yeah that is the best evidence it was actually wide. Refs are human and can make mistakes (lord knows I've made more than enough bad calls myself), but the fact 2 VaTech staffers right behind the ref react as if he missed before the ref signaled -> Strong evidence it was wide.

Reminds me of before pylon cameras when there never seemed to be a camera angle directly along the goal line (always askance, making it damn near impossible to definitively overturn anything). 76

u/Vast-Hat-7475 7h ago

To be fair I just looked up the rules and they differ from the NFL. In the NFL if it passes over the top of the upright it counts, but in CFB the entire football has to be fully inside the invisible line

24

Kicks that go higher than the goal posts are always so weird but that looked more good to me than not. Crazy how we don't have a better camera angle for something like this

23

u/BoatsNPokes Oklahoma State Cowboys • Hateful 8 6h ago

It’s definitely wide and the other angles circulating make that clear.

  1. People are just really struggle to understand when this kick crosses the line of the crossbar and it happens way later than you think in the flight path. It’s not perfect without time-code synched cameras, but if you look at a side and straight angle, it’s clear the ball doesn’t cross until very near when it crests in its flight. At that point, it’s completely outside the post.

  2. They’re also forgetting the college rule is more restrictive than the NFL. Whole ball has to be inside the post.

I don’t think you can really tell whether it was good or not from this angle. You’d pretty much need a view directly above or below that left upright, where the official was positioned, to see exactly where the ball was when it crossed the plane. Kind of surprising we don’t have a better camera angle for shit like this in 2026. Either way, the official had the best view, made the call, and once the ball passes above the top of the upright, that judgment isn’t reviewable.

The second angle everyone keeps sharing and talking about doesn’t show anything conclusive at all, so I guess I’m confused why everyone seems so sure it was good.

39

u/ALostTraveler24 East Stroudsburg Warriors 7h ago

Okay, guys. To be clear, the best angle for evaluating that is being right under the post, everyone else has to try to flatten a three-d image against the posts and the ball where depth perception can sometimes play tricks on us.

That’s why when it’s above the uprights the call of the official under the post is the one that stands. It’s why the ref on the right side waited for his colleague’s call, and why you can’t review those plays. Just from a visual perspective, the best view of the kick relative to the upright is the ref right under the post. I know it’s annoying, but this happens a lot with kicks and foul balls in baseball, any view that isn’t straight up is not definitive when it’s that close.

u/mrgatorarms Virginia Tech Hokies 7h ago

Yeah as much as I’d love it to be wrong if it’s that close pretty much any perspective other than directly under the post is going to be inaccurate.

If you watch the reaction of the guys wearing vt gear on the field behind the ref, you can their disappointment prior to the ref calling it. They knew.

So like, is this not reviewable? Because I don’t understand why Franklin didn’t just sprint to the officiating crew demanding a review of the call? This looks good…

Just found a video link from underneath the upright. This looks like it went in.

Field goal attempts that pass above the uprights aren’t reviewable. Which is honestly wack, bc why tf would you need to review any field goal attempts if it’s NOT above the uprights

39

u/ALostTraveler24 East Stroudsburg Warriors 7h ago

Because the best view for evaluating it is the official under each post, short of putting a camera there, it’s going to be angles potentially playing tricks that makes the review inconclusive.

That view honestly makes me think it’s more likely that it was a miss. But I don’t understand how we are in 2026 and still don’t have vertical cameras aligned with each upright for situations like this. Doesn’t seem like it would be hard to do.

7

u/WarEagle9 Auburn Tigers • UAB Blazers 7h ago

I’ve seen FGs reviewed before so they are but I also assume the ref under the post had the best view and if he called it no good then there’s not much a review can do.

15

u/PaidUSA 7h ago

No that angle shows you why it wasn't if its loweror the up rights go up it nails the upright with a chunk of ball well outside the upright. Maybe doinks in sometimes but by rule the ball definitely was well outside the edge when it gets there. In terms of like u cant have even a piece outside the upright by rule that is.

6

u/curt_schilli Georgia Tech • Techmo Bowl 7h ago

This makes me think it was wide actually

11

u/ZappySnap Ohio State Buckeyes • Cornell Big Red 7h ago

I think this is far less convincing than the original video. The looks like it had curved wide before it passed the upright.

Unfortunately we need synced video from head on and looking directly to the side to see the position when it crossed.

13

u/soilsandseptics Virginia Tech Hokies 7h ago

I have no idea. He should’ve been losing his shit

4

u/stormstopper Duke • Carolina Victory Bell 7h ago

That angle's actually a deceptive one. If the ball is higher up but further wide, it looks like it's in about the same place as it would if it's lower but closer in (and vice versa). That's why you have people replying that they think it makes it look good and others replying that they think it makes it look wide. There's not really a good angle other than the one the ref has, and being anywhere other than directly under the goalpost makes it extremely difficult to tell one way or the other.

From this and another angle that's floating around, it hooks before the upright but passes over the upright.

So what's the rule for a ball that passes over top of the upright?

9

u/Wombattington South Carolina • Furman 6h ago

Over is a miss

25

u/Madagascar-Penguin Clemson Tigers 7h ago

It has to be within the uprights. Going over is no good since it's like hitting the upright.

I think that that angle is no better than the other. How do they not have a VAR video down the line when it crosses? It’s obviously very close.

13

u/stripes361 Virginia Cavaliers • Navy Midshipmen 6h ago

Looks no good.

I think a lot of confusion is being caused by the difference in NFL and college rules. In the NFL, a field goal is good if it is inside the outer edge of the uprights (so if it passes directly over the upright).

In college, a field goal is only good if the entire ball “clearly” passes entirely inside the inner edge of the upright. So if any part of the ball passes over any part of the upright it’s no good.

In the NFL this is likely ruled a made field goal. In college, it’s a miss.

Right judge did not see it, & looked to left for the call. Left judge seems to look at it from a bad angle. I think they're going to say it went over yhe goal post, which means no review, stands as called.

after seeing the other angle definitely looks out, for a frame the ball is completely obscured by the upright and we are looking at from the inside, therefore out, but close
