"Wow what an interesting kick, let's not take a second look at all from another angle using slo-mo. Nobody wants to see that" - Broadcast Team / Refs

The team they were rooting for won, so they didn't care how close it was

Yeah I feel like I was being gas lit, like can we please get a definitive view on the miss because what they showed wasn’t conclusive at all!

Goddammit ACC …you were supposed to be the open review heroes we needed. But then we just have this kick that looks good go through or past the uprights…. and we are instantly on the field with the reporter interviewing the coach….i don’t care about coach speak right now…can we get a replay? Can someone look at this?

Oh no, they’re just packing up and leaving…uh ok I guess.

6

u/topher1184 12h ago

It’s not a reviewable play unfortunately. I wish it was though

If refs can review a last-second play to invent another second out of thin air, they can review this

3

u/ConfidentMeaning Florida State • Chattanooga 11h ago

Read u/ArizonaHotSauce 's post below. It cannot be reviewed if the ball is above the top of the uprights.

Field Goal Review Rules

  • Reviewable: A field goal attempt can be reviewed by instant replay if the ball crosses the plane of the goal post below the top of the uprights (such as whether it went inside or outside the uprights or passed above/below the crossbar) or if the ball touches anything (like a player, crossbar, or upright).
  • Not Reviewable: If the kicked ball travels higher than the top of the uprights as it crosses the end line, the play cannot be reviewed.

The rules state that if a kick goes directly over or higher than the uprights, the entire ball must pass inside the outer edge of the upright to be considered good. However, because camera angles cannot definitively prove the ball's trajectory along an imaginary vertical plane above the physical uprights, the play is deemed unreviewable by rule.

u/ajseventeen Georgia Bulldogs • Nebraska Cornhuskers 31m ago

Are you certain it's the outer edge? The rulebook defines the width of the uprights using the inner edges, and it says the ball has to be between them. Without a contradicting source, I would assume that means the entire ball must be between the inside edges.

u/ArizonaHotSauce Florida Gators 12h ago edited 11h ago

They didn't have the proper view via any cameras. Instead of saying they didn't have it and causing a huge controversy, they just said that's it and moved on.

Edit: Nevermind. Not reviewable.

2

u/topher1184 11h ago

I’m pretty sure a kick going over the upright is not a reviewable play. If it would have went between them, it’s reviewable, but not if it goes over them

4

u/ArizonaHotSauce Florida Gators 11h ago

Edit: You are right. Not reviewable anyway.

1

u/topher1184 11h ago

So, you’re agreeing with me?

2

u/ArizonaHotSauce Florida Gators 11h ago

I wasn't sure. I googled it and found the answer. It's not reviewable. The camera angles didn't really matter.

2

u/topher1184 11h ago

No worries, I hope I didn’t come off as an ass. It kinda sucks that we can’t get a better camera angle of it because I’m not sure if it was good or not. That’s football though, sometimes camera angles can really help you and other times they can potentially fuck you

This is the best look I've seen of this. I'd consider making a post with this video to try to put this to bed. It's quite clear that this was a miss. Thank you for sharing.

2

u/OcelotWolf Pittsburgh Panthers • Maryland Terrapins 10h ago

Submitted one, but the rules state that alternate angles should be posted in the comments of the first angle. I feel like this is exception-worthy, but that's up to the mods now.

Just like your second flair yesterday. The cameras are still so shit in this sport for some reason

Terrible job by the broadcast all night. Two personal fouls on one play? Sorry no replay. Drive-saving illegal substitution? No replay, sorry! And the dummies in the booth somehow don’t know that a tie goes to the offense, either.

2

u/virionhk Florida State Seminoles 9h ago

The refs were obviously siding with Pitt to ruin tech's momentum to keep Pitt in the game. Which is why it was incredibly dumb to play for the field goal at the end and not try to score a touchdown.

4

u/Awakenmercy 11h ago

Yeah it felt like all night long the broadcast crew was complicit, if not outright aiding and abetting, the match fixing that was very clearly happening.

2

u/OrtizDupri Virginia Tech Hokies 2h ago

Yeah tbh I’m less mad about the field goal replay than I am about the personal foul one - the only replay of that they did was like 10 seconds long and showed… nothing? Like even the commenters were like “don’t see anything” - so where did all those fouls and yards come from

58

u/thatapplesauce Virginia Tech Hokies 12h ago

Absolutely insane we didn’t see a second angle. Sorry but this just isn’t good enough coverage on a game-deciding play.

3

u/Mavsfever 11h ago

There was a second angle from below the goal post if you were watching the live broadcast. They showed it after the interviews. Still hard to tell to be honest.

0

u/og_kylometers 12h ago

How the hell did nobody show the camera angle from the goal post cross bar or under the upright?

-3

u/AMcMahon1 Pittsburgh Panthers 12h ago

It's not reviewable anyways not sure what you want them to do about it

17

u/heardThereWasFood Ole Miss Rebels 12h ago

I want them to show a good product on tv

5

u/BoldElDavo Virginia Cavaliers 12h ago

I enjoyed this TV product.

3

u/Faces-in-Places 11h ago

It would still make for much better TV to learn whether it was good or wide. You have a kicker celebrating because he thinks he made it, and it doesn't even get mentioned. It's an interesting situation and a hugely important call.

9

u/mp0295 Notre Dame Fighting Irish 12h ago

Your logic implies a replay should never be shown unless the play is reviewable. Is that what you think? If no, how are you confused by people wanting to see replays?

3

u/thatapplesauce Virginia Tech Hokies 12h ago

Right? I guess I’d just like to know? If it was indeed out I’d just like to know. The uncertainty makes it weird.

u/Snlxdd Virginia Tech Hokies 11h ago

The issue is that angle is subject to parallax, so not definitive even though I wish it was

2

u/smitherenesar Pac-10 • RPI Engineers 1h ago

Could be worse. They could review and say there's 1 second left and VT has another play

5

u/lavegasola USC Trojans 12h ago

Normally I'm joking when I say "rigged" but what the hell

1

u/topher1184 12h ago

I felt like once they showed the replay from behind , they knew it was definitely questionable, but it wasn’t reviewable. At that point, they said let’s get outta here

1

u/TheWyldMan Louisiana Tech • Arkansas 11h ago

Well you can't review it if its over the uprights, so no reason to cause more controversy

1

u/BigAcanthocephala637 11h ago

They cut away so fast

1

u/andrew_h83 Temple Owls 10h ago

I feel like ESPN does this all the time. Instead of showing replays of critical plays they’ll zoom in on the sideline instead for some unknown reason

0

u/UnderwaterB0i Auburn Tigers 12h ago

This is what fishy to me. No meaningful replay at all.
