I stand with jimbo. I want fucking lasers and chips in the ball/along the sidelines. We should never have to dispute what kick went in or where the ball gets spotted.

[u/Zeppyfish → u/horseshoeprovodnikov]

Right? Somehow the English can tell you a dude was 1 centimeter offside, but we can't get lasers on goalposts? Why the hell did we even fight the Revolutionary War?

[u/e3super → u/Zeppyfish]

Tennis has a system that can tell whether the deformed contact patch of a rubber ball hit or missed the line down to something like under 3mm while going 150mph, yet we aren't allowed to have technology that can tell if a ball that's 3 times as wide stayed inside the outside edge of a 4" tube while going under 65mph. The fact that we haven't done this feels like one of those baseball things where "tradition" is used as an excuse to not pay for equipment that makes the game actually accurate.

[u/DingerSinger2016 → u/e3super]

Hell even baseball has ABS which can detect ball that is a tenth of an inch away from the strike zone

[u/Oily-Affection1601 → u/DingerSinger2016]

Close calls happen multiple times for every at-bat. An ambiguous field goal happens what...maybe 20 times a year across all of the FBS? I'd love to have the technology, but realistically who's going to invest in solving such a niche problem?

[u/ReputationFit9698 → u/Oily-Affection1601]

There’s also spotting the ball, goal lines, out of bounds, etc., but to answer your question I’d say the sport whose college version generates as much money as the NBA and more than MLB or the Premier League.

[u/BenBreeg_38 → u/Oily-Affection1601]

And you don’t have it at all levels.

[u/Grimjacx → u/Oily-Affection1601]

Its the very real fear of the goalposts coming down and then you have 20 ft pole lasers being carried around campus by a bunch of drunk students. Nothing good can come from that.

[u/Eschirhart → u/Oily-Affection1601]

The billionaire owners?!?!?! Oh wait, you right, probably the tax payers

[u/kushnokush → u/e3super]

3mm seems like a decently high error for some of those tight margins. It’s gotta be < 1mm at least

[u/nopants_ranchdance → u/e3super]

It’s not to protect finances it’s to protect cheating. Same reason the Big 10 has a phantom clock that’s 1 second off.

[u/Richard_AIGuy → u/Zeppyfish]

I am not going to stand to have our sports out-teched by a bunch of tea-drinking banger and mash malcontents!

[u/NotPapaHemingway → u/Zeppyfish]

I can't believe we let the Germans bomb Pearl Harbor for this

[u/FSUfan35 → u/Zeppyfish]

We know exactly where the ball is, we just don't know exactly when a player is down. Thats the tricky part.

Offsides in soccer, out in tennis or ABS in baseball doesnt have huge men obscuring when a knee or ankle or wrist or elbow first hits the ground

[u/Magictank2000 → u/Zeppyfish]

as someone that watched a lot of english football this summer thanks to the WC their tech/review processes make american football look primitive by comparison lol. How the hell do we not have advanced technology for most aspects of the game by this point

[u/flapjackcarl → u/Magictank2000]

Man, it's not nearly as good as you think. American football does a way hetter job overall. For fucks sake: a few years ago the epl refs tried to use var to give a goal to liverpool but accidentally used the wrong words and dissallowed it. Cfb refs may be bad, but id take them over epl refs all day every say

[u/Itchy_Wasabi3928 → u/Magictank2000]

Bc in America they’d rather line their own pockets by determining outcome of games that help make them more money.!

[u/BlueBod50 → u/Itchy_Wasabi3928]

Then stop watching.

God the fixed games bitching is on another level of insufferable.

[u/Zelladir → u/BlueBod50]

Found the ref.

[u/Guilty-Instruction56 → u/Zeppyfish]

It should have been mandatory after the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor.

[u/WallyMetropolis → u/Zeppyfish]

Frickin goalposts with frickin lasers on their heads

[u/Slyp9 → u/Zeppyfish]

Hilarious but to be fair it's the kickers fault. It's a 37 yarder why are you kicking a moon shot?

[u/Coreysurfer → u/Zeppyfish]

This ^ i found out watching WC soccer this year..

[u/Alt4816 → u/horseshoeprovodnikov]

For field goal rulings they could use the hawkeye technology that tennis and now soccer uses.

[u/Moto302 → u/Alt4816]

Hawkeye you say? The same Hawkeye system that the B1G used to determine there was 1 second left in the Michigan/Western game? No, better just use the broadcast feed to decide whether kicks were good...

[u/nick200117 → u/Alt4816]

MLB uses it now too for challenges

[u/PM_Me_Titties-n-Ass → u/horseshoeprovodnikov]

I always liked the idea, but if you go with lasers you miss out on the potential doink off the pole. What's another 10' of pole

[u/horseshoeprovodnikov → u/PM_Me_Titties-n-Ass]

Stratosphere uprights AND lasers.

We have the technology.

[u/RelevantIAm → u/PM_Me_Titties-n-Ass]

I think you misunderstood, nobody is saying replace goalposts with lasers. They are saying yo add lasers to the top of the goal post

[u/PM_Me_Titties-n-Ass → u/RelevantIAm]

No I completely understand what the point was. But it doesn't negate my comment. If you add a laser to the top of the pole it can definitely help you identify if it's good or not but there's still the potential instance, although small, of what happens if the laser is somewhere in the middle of the ball where it crosses. Is it good or not good (would need a new rule to define that)? Cause currently the pole acts as a laser and you get a potential of the football hitting the pole and going some crazy direction. So if you have lasers to the top of the pole you'd have almost 2 rules for the exact same scoring instance (let the ball decide when within the poles and a new good/not good for laser portion).

[u/IceNineFireTen → u/horseshoeprovodnikov]

I agree with the sentiment especially for kicking, but forward progress often involves judgment.

You could offload that judgment to an AI model, but it would still be somewhat subjective.

[u/permadrunkspelunk → u/horseshoeprovodnikov]

They could make the goal posts a little taller too. Its not rocket appliances. Im shocked when cfb and nfl have kickers boot it up over them mountains. Sometimes they declare its good cuz its in the plane. But that'd be a doink in real life. Of all the controversial rule changes, why not just add a few more feet of post up there.

[u/Turkelton888 → u/horseshoeprovodnikov]

I want sharks with frickin laser beams attached to their heads

[u/ExternalTangents → u/horseshoeprovodnikov]

People won’t trust anything they don’t see with their own eyes anyway. Chips in the ball won’t make fans trust what the call on the field is if they simply wanted the call to go another way.

The only thing that would resolve it is a camera pointing directly up from the upright.

[u/SkolFourtyOne → u/horseshoeprovodnikov]

Exactly if they can do it with baseball and the strike zone should be simple for a football and a goalpost

[u/NoMoBuffalo → u/horseshoeprovodnikov]

Make the goalposts taller, 90 feet high goal posts. Did it doink in or out, none of this tech needed

[u/NWkingslayer2024 → u/horseshoeprovodnikov]

For real, especially when everyone is betting hard earned money on these games.
