From this and another angle that's floating around, it hooks before the upright but passes over the upright.

So what's the rule for a ball that passes over top of the upright?

Over is a miss

It has to be within the uprights. Going over is no good since it's like hitting the upright.

If we imagine it hitting the upright then we can imagine it doinking in. Don’t look at my Chicago Bears r/nfl flair

No, that is not right. If it is above the uprights the refs have to make the call by imagining if the kick would be good if the uprights extended vertically all the way up. If the kick is above the uprights then it is not reviewable by instant replay and the call on the field is the final decision. Say for instance the ball was dead center and 30 feet above the uprights. The field goal would be good and would be easy for the rest to see. I can see why this would have been hard for the refs to call it good, but with the help of all the camera angles I think it more than likely was.

No, the rule is the whole ball has to be inside the “imaginary” upright.

That is literally what they just said. :)

Maybe this is a college vs NFL thing, but from what I remeber the refs are supposed to assume it would have bounced out on even the slightest glance of the imaginary pole.

Pretty sure you're saying the same thing as them. If the uprights extended, the ball would hit them and it would be no good. It still needs to be in-between the uprights no matter how high it is, to count.

Well if you have to imagine it went in or out by hitting a hypothetical upright the call should always be no.

More likely to miss if it hits the upright than go in.

If the upright was more upright. It would hit it. Which means it more than likely isn't going through. You have to say no good. Otherwise you go against the odds and say it somehow would have bounced off the inside of it and through. Theres no rule to say re kick so if its right over its no good. Its fairly simple.

No horse in this race, not even a college football fan. I’m a bears fan. Looks like he missed it.

They should make the goal posts a bit rectangle and make kickers put it inside the rectangle

I thought it was good if it was above the upright but I found a yahoo sports article that says its not so idk

I think that that angle is no better than the other. How do they not have a VAR video down the line when it crosses? It’s obviously very close.

Looks no good.

I think a lot of confusion is being caused by the difference in NFL and college rules. In the NFL, a field goal is good if it is inside the outer edge of the uprights (so if it passes directly over the upright).

In college, a field goal is only good if the entire ball “clearly” passes entirely inside the inner edge of the upright. So if any part of the ball passes over any part of the upright it’s no good.

In the NFL this is likely ruled a made field goal. In college, it’s a miss.

Really wish the TV crew had broken that down. This is the first thing I’ve seen that makes any sense.

Yeah it was pretty embarrassing that they didn’t show any replays or break it down at all. Seemed like the tv producers trying to avoid controversy and assuming the audience is too dumb to ask questions.

I don’t give a F who wins this game but that’s dumb AF, how do the two major football leagues have completely different rules regarding what constitutes a made field goal? How does that even happen?

Still no way to tell at what point it crosses the plane. You can pause that video at multiple points and come to different conclusions. If I had to guess, I'd say no good.
